Whitney Houston Trailer

Whitney, directed by Angela Bassett and starring Yaya DaCosta as Whitney Houston, has its first trailer. The movie will premiere on Lifetime on January 17.

It follows the golden-voiced singer’s rise to fame and the top of the charts, her volatile relationship with Bobby Brown, descent into drug use, and tragic and early death. Houston, of course, died in February 2012 at the age of 48. Arlen Escarpeta portrays Brown in Whitney.

Lifetime has drawn a LOT of criticism over its recent biopic movies. The Brittany Murphy Story was attacked as an inaccurate, sensationalized exploitation of the circumstances surrounding the actress’ death. Last month, Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B was ripped to shreds for its bizarre casting choices and what many viewers felt was a disrespectful tone.

Bassett worked with Houston in Waiting to Exhale, and early buzz around Whitney seems to be more positive than other Lifetime projects. Check out the first Whitney trailer below, and tell us what you think.
