National Enquirer Crosses Line, Shows Photos of Dead Whitney Houston

(GettyImages.com)

The National Enquirer frequently sets the bar very, very low.

But the tabloid really crossed the line this week when it decided to publish a cover story featuring a photo of Whitney Houston in an open casket at the Whigham Funeral Home in New Jersey before her burial last weekend.

That’s right: The magazine somehow thought it was appropriate to put an unauthorized picture of the late singer’s dead body on every newsstand in America.

It’s not appropriate.

Actually, it’s astoundingly poor taste and low stooping, even by the Enquirer’s standards.

And it represents the very worst of predatory paparazzi culture.

There’s no reason why the public at large needs to see Houston’s lifeless body.

Almost as jaw-dropping as the decision to show the photo itself is the Enquirer’s total lack of self-awareness in “reporting” on Houston’s private viewing.

The tabloid says Houston was “finally at peace after a tumultuous and troubled life in the spotlight.”

But the Enquirer invaded that “peace” by sticking cameras into the casket.

The mag adds, “This was the emotional private viewing that her legions of fans never saw, a time for Whitney’s loved ones to say a heartfelt goodbye with their tears and prayers.”

And the Enquirer trampled on those loved ones’ final moments with Houston, turning what should have been an out-of-view private time for reflection into tabloid spectacle.

Elvis was shown in his coffin (1977) so it’s nothing new.

  • Fran

The NE is scum, we all can agree on that. However, I think the person that sold the photo for what was probably a large amount of money is even more guilty. They can’t publish what they don’t have. It proves that people in her “inner circle” or the funeral home, not sure who sold the photo, were exploiting her even in death. Sad commentary on so many levels.

  • D. Martin

That is the equivalent of desecrating someone’s grave! This is an all time LOW! I totally agree with Gossip Cop on this. Her poor family.

  • Anonymous

    So was James Brown, right?

  • D. Martin

    It was LOW then too.

  • Anonymous

I’ll say it again, there ain’t nothing like family – especially when one of them dies. Everything changes and it’s no longer about love.

  • D. Martin

You think the family allowed this?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=649959812 Lisa Gelinas

If it was just family, how did a photographer get in? Or…did someone from the viewing send in the photo??? Everyone is out for the almighty $$$

The National Enquirer has done some sick things in the Past but this is just sickest Thing they have done.

  • Guest

It’s low but I bet it will sell well. People are thirsty for the worst possible news about celebs. It’s terrible.

  • Danhouston

where can i see ? i need closure

  • Sam

The picture was takenn in the private viewing for family/close friends. So someone in there took it and sold it. That makes them just as disgusting and guilty.

  • Chris R

Don’t see how horrible a picture like that is….but having someone trusted to the funeral doing it is pretty damn low.

  • http://bl-magazine.blogspot.com/ Bilel-

i think allowed by the family
    Visit BL-magazine!

  • Regina1180

Not that I agree with what the NE did, but you know that someone close to her sold them that photo.

Her funeral was treated like a concert.

  • Lucy

Regina’s right…. The family has already figured out to profit from it to make money for Bobby Kristina’s trust, so basically, someone else just beat the family to the punch on making money off them first.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_L2HYCQIWGVR6KS7QNF26WGRF3A LittleMo

Don’t forget John Lennon. The tabloids didn’t even wait for him to be put into the coffin. His photo was taken with him laid out on a slab at the morgue.

  • aquarius64

The service is call a “home going”, and this is common in African American communities in how to say good bye to a love one. What the Enquirer did was low, but don’t use that as an excuse to denigrate a culture.

  • A Random Commenter

There is a difference. James Brown had public viewing and his family allowed his body to be pictured!!!!!

Whitney’s family chose a private viewing and did not want her on display if they did, she would have been. There is a difference!!!!!!

    IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!

This paper crossed the line big time!!!

  • French Flies

Another tabloid had a photo of her, covered with a sheet, her legs splayed apart. I don’t know if it was actually her. It is very cold hearted but as long as people buy that shit, it will continue. I stopped buying tabloids when Diana was killed.

  • Lisam2012

Her funeral was treated very appropriately, like a home-going celebration not a concert and if you dont know about that maybe you should do some research. It was very moving and dignified.

  • James74

That was a private moment for the family. They was kind enough to allow her funeral to be aired in tv for the whole world to see. I agree that the paper was wrong to published the picture but the person who tooked the picture of Whitney like that and then have the nerve to sell the picture to the paper for money that disgust me. They suppose to be a friend or family member to Whitney. Whitneyor her family Didn’t deserve that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001317694949 Donovan Jones

Whitney was a public figure, the people “like me and you paid her, and made her the icon she is today, and therefore they have the right to see her off, they have the right to have a public service, like with Michael Jackson.

The family is very much out of touch…
The ear rigs she had on either 99 cent or the 500K “the fans paid for that!

    Very simple to see…

  • Perfume Othello

Somebody who was part of the “private viewing” sold the photo for a price – many are going to want to cash in on her death

  • Leonard Edelen

I do not believe it is a real picture of her. If you look closely, Whitney has no neck. It looks as if this this a photoshopped pic of Whitney’s head on another body.

  • Anelson
  • Shawn-sheila1

Tacky as always. I cannot believe that people actually pay money for this trash paper. They have zero respect for peoples lives and how they will feel if they see these tasteless photos. Everyone should boycot the paper so maybe they will get the message.

  • Anonymous

I have followed this story unlike with Micheal Jackson who I grew up listening to both. Of course as a curious fan or viewer people want all the details, its a part of like called being nosy ( Human Nature ) however I have read some people bad things ( wont repeat ) regarding her and her so called trashy life and bad choices. I have my own opinions but I choose to keep them to myself. However what everyone is over looking in the entire situation regardless of how she died, or the mistakes she made. She has a child that was watched mistakes over the years, and a child will always love a parent regardless of right or wrong doings. This private service, all the hush hush was for Bobbi Kristen. Fame or not a child lost their parent. Never being able to see her marry, or have children of her own, no one to call upon when times get tough, A child is without a mother, so anyone looking for fame ( bobby brown and others ) or from someone who post picture of a body in an open casket for some money. REMEMBER Whitney Houston my have been a famous person that everyone wants to know every detail about, but please stop being opinionated and remember a child lost a parent and BK deserved the right to privately place her mouth to rest and for it to be done without everyone else trying to gain 30 seconds of fame or money. If you are going to post and comment on sights stop and ask your self what if it was your child or grandchild would you want people do treat them this way. As a struggling single mother of 3, I know I wouldnt want my children to see my ignorance for 30 seconds of fame or money. Famous saying opinions are: Opinions are like Butt%^&*(s and everyone has one. As a parent I also teach my children if you dont have something nice to say than dont say it at all and respect others. Apparently people have no core values in life anymore..

  • Selia45

Cruel,Insensitive and just down right evil! Her family would have had an open casket if they wanted the whole world gawking at poor Whitney. This is a sick world and the fact that a human being would actually benefit from this makes me ill .Did you not see the pain on her loved ones faces.Karma is a bitch and it’s coming.

  • Anonymous

No that tabloid stated a re-creation, however that photo was wrong as well never should have been put out there.

  • Jareddickson2011

i agree with you on this there was no reason for it the family was nice enough to let the whole world see the services but that was over the line but this is what happens when people are money hungry

  • chris

Never have viewed an open casket myself. I really don’t know what to think.

Our sensibilities have greatly changed since the prior to 1960. It used to be that the dead celebrity body was photographed and appeared on the front page of most major newspapers.

In 1948, when Carole Landis, a major WW2 film star, committed suicide, a photo of her dead on her bathroom floor was on the front of the Los Angeles Examiner. She was wearing the plaid skirt and puff-sleeved blouse she’d worn to dinner with Rex Harrison the night before. Her head was turned to her right with the upper part of her face quite visible. Her left hand was braced against the floor as if she tried to rise or had lowered her self down.

In 1958, the body of Johnny Stompanado was shown on Lana Turner’s bedroom floor as the police examined it. That, too, was a front page of major newspapers photo. Another photo shows his uncovered body at the morgue. That was also for general public consumption. Also, Lana’s 14-year-old daughter, Cheryl, whom both had said stabbed Stompanado while defending her mother, was literally torn apart in the media. There was no shielding her because she was only 14.

  • Galaxcee2009

Whitneys grave will have to be watched 24/7 as i read somewhere on here that she was buried with alot of Moolah which should not have come out for the public to see anyway as there are people around who may dig her up jus to take her jewels. So sad especially to see that their is a picture of her visible lying lifeless in her casket. Dont these morons have anything better to do or do they like to take photos of a deceased person and sell it for money because to me that is just down right effing sick. R.I.P hitney you and your family did not deserve even a tiny bit of this disrespectfulness. WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU…

  • Kevinpeyton

whitney played russian roulette with her life for over 10 years, and had to have known the devastation her death would cause her daughter. you don’t get much lower than that.

i hope that there is more than what we know, and that she is now having to answer to, or at least having to witness the devastation caused by her selfish lifestyle & choices…a beautiful voice, but an ugly human being

  • Liciamem901

    Wowwwwwww That’s Just Wrong!!

  • chris

To: Galaxcee, agree with you. I feel it was a very personal viewing for close ones. Also I respect the fact that some people do not choose to view. I had a sensitive, emotional experience with a close partner who passed. She was found deceased on her apartment floor. The Police phoned me & allowed me to identify her, and view her. She looked very peaceful which helped me with her passing. If they had released any photos, which they would not have done anyway it would be wrong in my mind. My father even arrived to help support me during the situation, and I asked him not to view her. He left me alone with a private moment with her. I am writing this because I want to express my feelings that this photo should not have been shared with the media. And YES, WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU…

  • keisha williams

I think it is important not judge anyone, We all have made mistakes. But one thing she didnot do is lose her faith god. May her soul rest in peace

  • TRUTH

Nobody has a right to some else’s privacy. You paid for a show, or a CD, NOT her privacy.

  • Pookie
  • Tora

I don’t understand why gossip cop thinks this is a horrible thing. Everyone is going to die someday, Whitney meant so much to a lot of people, It is not like this is a picture of a murder victim, it is not gruesome to see a dead body of someone you love, if it was we would never want to have open casked funerals. However I do find it in bad taste if this photo was not authorized, I feel that the photographer should be held accountable.

  • Anonymous

That’s how a body is inside a casket, with their head up like that.

This is the cover of the National Enquirer, which has a picture of Whitney in her casket on the front page. Don’t click it if you don’t want to see it. You have been warned.

Can’t blame them for waht a friend or family member did. If NE didn’t buy it, then some other rag would have. It’s a horrible thing, but been happening to others all along too.

  • Anonymous

Allowed it? They were the only ones in the private viewing, so what I mean is that it was either a family member or a friend who took the picture. All for the money, because there is no honor among family when someone dies. It’s one for all and all for one.

  • http://bl-magazine.blogspot.com/ aminos
  • Npark

That too was the National Enquirer… my 11 year old daughter spotted it and said, “Mom, this is so sick that they have this picture on the front page.” Just goes to show you that even an ELEVEN YEAR OLD CHILD can see how wrong this stuff is. Shame on Nat. Enq. for posting this whether it is real or recreated… Human nature made me “curious” but I honestly did NOT NEED to see this. Also, it sure won’t make me purchase the crappy magazine either.

  • Boey

The NE is wrong, point blank. I dont care what she did in her life they are flat out wrong!

  • Unjustified678

it is wrong but how many people on here commenting looked at the photo quote i dont think its real its photoshop if it is so wrong how come most of you looked at it cause you are curious i dont know why they would get so upset yes disrespecting her privacy is bad but people loved whitney people that never met her she had a huge fan base and although they say its disrespectful but its like you or me going to someones funeral to see them for the last time and say goodbye this photo makes her look so peaceful and beautiful kind of like she was when she was alive her spirit was filled with God and even when she was going through tough times she never lost it. It kind of gives people closure i wasnt disgusted when i saw it i was happy that she has gone home weather or not she is getting to RIP on earth in this life she is up in heaven celebrating with God and that is amazing whitney will always be remembered as an icon and this picture is the last we will ever see of her when they were showing pics of her on there tribute they all showed baby pics of her so we get to see her whole life beginning to end i think that it is just another way to say goodbye we will miss you whitney a mother daughter sister and friend you were always an icon and will always be remembered as one i will see you one day i know you are up there singing with my mother in law right now cant wait to see you both.

  • Remount2000

That is very judgmental. We all have demons inside of us. We all have made wrong choices. No one is perfect. She made a choice, and thanks be to God, we all have choices. And no matter what you do and who you are, you still should be respected. We all are going to have to answer to the negative decisions that we make in life. But non is perfect no not one!!

  • Remount2000

Amen sister, and that is what is important. People make me sick judging.

  • Doc

Personally, I think she should have had an open casket. Of course the family decides this, but for some the deceased is an important part of the grieving process/closure and all that. But beyond that, maybe if folks were able to see what happened to such a beautiful and talented woman when RX’s and alcohol are mixed, and the effects long term illegal drugs have on a person’s body and looks, they would think twice about doing it to themselves. Just maybe some lasting good could somehow have come from this needless tragedy. What a shame to lose Whitney far too soon.

  • Doc

Sorry I omitted “seeing” the deceased- Doc

  • Delta020

You are so right . People are cold and heartless and so sad

anyone could have took that picture…it could be someone who worked in the funeral home….anyone! doesn’t mean it was her family or friends…..the world may never know

  • Kay in Macon

I haven’t seen the photo, but is it posible that an employee of the funeral home did it? I hate to think a family mmber would be so low as to exploit a troubled relative like this.

  • Kchaynez

Got to remember one thing the public. The public made her what she was, she was a great singer, and should be known as that. View her or not, this picture wouldn’t be worth nothing if the family would of let the public view her. She belonges to the world owned by GOD.

  • Jack Stewart

Who cares? Enough of this…there are thousands of people dying fighting for America, facing unbelievable horrors and excruciating pain fighting for our country. What has she done apart from throwing away all that fame, fortune, privilege and good luck given to her on a silver platter. She wasted all that and paid for it.

There is no doubt that Whitney Houston is a great loss in the music industry but we should be thankful that we still have remarkable artists like Adele and many others. How the hell does Mrs Houston (Cissy) make a profit by losing and then burying her child. Did you know that funerals cost money? Had to ask. If money is the first thing you can think of when your child dies, then you didnt deserve that child. Everyone except the Houston Families are cashing in. Cissy Houston SHARED her daughters LIFE and DEATH with the world and you all still ridicule. Unfortunately for all the hateful no it all people out there that are constantly in judgment, the HOUSTON FAMILY are so strong in the WORD that they would be praying for all their enemies. And as for the concert remark, dont comment on things you dont know about. Rejoicing is what the church does, they are waiting and preparing everyday for that day when they are carried home.

Agreed,The family has giving us her for over 30years in life.. They at least deserve to have her in death(privately)..Whoever took the picture and sold it to the NE should be ashamed of themselves.. People wanted to remember her in life not in death and how she died and the NE should be sued for making such a STUPID decision…

This is what I wanted to say. ‘Public Figures’ are just people who entertain us. You don’t follow your dentist around because you admire the bridgework. You don’t buy magazines with pictures of your accountants children because your tax return was a good one. You SHOULDN’T demand an entertainer’s private life as a right because you liked the album.

  • Johnny7112533

Typical black person, they get all the money and fame and blow it all. Because all blacks go back to thier ghetto roots. Like M Jackson, D Strawberry, MC Hammer and the list goes on and on. It is disrespectful to publish photos of anyone in their casket. How did this disgusting magazine obtain this picture in the first place unless someone at the funeral home allowed it or someone at the funeral took it since the funeral wasn’t a public one? I don’t care if it’s Whitney Houston or anyone else, it shows a disgusting lack of respect and it makes me sick that anyone would buy this magazine.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Deborah-Rosenbloom/100001386316111 Deborah Rosenbloom

Are you kidding me?/ What does that have to do with Whitney Houston or anyone else? Gaddafi was a Libian Dictator and the fact is it isn’t right to post any photos of anyone if their casket but really???

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Deborah-Rosenbloom/100001386316111 Deborah Rosenbloom

I agree in a lot of ways but she as anyone deserves to rest in peace and doesn’t deserve to have her family suffer more from having a picture of her body in the casket on the front page of a magazine. I think if every so called celebrity donated one thousand dollars of each of their oversized paycheck to charity instead of asking the public that can barely support our families for it there would be a lot less suffering.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Deborah-Rosenbloom/100001386316111 Deborah Rosenbloom

I would rather not see either but see your point. Bobby Brown was her downfall and if he writes a book (assuming he can read or write) I would be sick if anyone bought it. He lived off his Whitney’s celebrity and that is why the show was even started and he made a fool of himself and her. I would rather just give the dead their due respect and not see any published pictures of her or anyone else their casket and hopefully her daughter will learn from the tragic addiction that killed her mother and not make the same mistakes?

Of course the publishing of the casket picture was probably tasteless. But the image of a beautiful serene peaceful Whitney lying in her casket is a much better image than Whitney, the lost soul, we’d seen the last few days preceding her death. I know I’m comforted seeing Whitney beautiful, peaceful and at rest. May God forever bless her soul so that her spirit may soar higher than ever before!!! Whitney, I love you.

I feel the person who took the photo was wrong, the NE was wrong to publish it, and people are wrong to buy the NE. It was private. Reactions seem to vary, because #1- some people don’t believe in open caskets, or choose not to view for whatever reasons they may have. #2- It does give some people comfort to view their loved ones at funerals. So, we have those two main conflicting groups to start with in this discussion. If the photo were authorized, I wonder what the reaction would be ? Since it wasn’t authorized, I am outraged. The photo gave me a terrible sinking feeling. I prefer to watch at her movies, look at her beautiful photos, and listen to Whitney’s inspiring music. I believe that the large majority of the public are out-raged, but for many different reasons. But all-in-all, it was wrong.

So? It was tasteless and beyond the pale then, and it’s tasteless and beyond the pale now. Just because “it’s nothing new” doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t still be outraged at the behavior. Shame on you for trivializing it. :(

  • Lynda Williams

None of that was okay. The bottom line is, the people who have the legal right to say yes, show it, or no, don’t show it, were ignored and trampled. you are no better than the rest of them with that insensitive comment. :(

  • Lynda Williams

You are 1,000% wrong about that. No celebrity is “owned” by their fans. WE don’t create them, they create themselves and most of us are grateful that they CHOOSE to share their talent with us so we can enjoy our time “with” them.

We appreciate them, and we pay them to “perform” for us, but we don’t own them or deserve to have full and free access to every aspect of their lives and deaths any more than we own the plumber who fixes our toilet or chef who cooks our dinner at a fancy restaurant.

SHAME ON YOU, and others who have expressed the same opinion, for your heartless, selfish, and smarmy “holier than thou” opinion of those who entertain you. Slavery isn’t dead, it’s just been transferred to a new host.
