Wayne Knight, Newman on Seinfeld, Victim of Death Hoax
“SEINFELD ACTOR ‘NEWMAN’ KILLED IN TRACTOR-TRAILER ACCIDENT,” reads the headline of a story posted on “TMZ.Today,” a bogus site seemingly designed to misled the public into thinking actor Wayne Knight had died in a car crash.
According to TMZ.Today — which has no affiliation with the legit and reliable site TMZ — Knight and “two other passengers [were] critically injured after their vehicle slammed into a disabled semi-tractor-trailer late Saturday night along Route 446 near the Pennsylvania-New York state border in Eldred Township.”
The bogus blog went on to claim, “McKean County Coroner Jeff Levin said Knight died of blunt force trauma at the scene. Also injured in the crash were two of Knight’s passengers, Christopher Davidson, 33, and an unidentified male, both of New York state. Police say the unidentified male was ejected from the back seat of the sedan.”
According to the TMZ-looking site, “Knight lost control of his 2013 Mercedes s550, slamming into the rear of a disabled 5-axle tractor trailer. The sedan sustained considerable damage. The sick site went on to list Knight’s professional credits and fake details from the reported accident. The story is NOT TRUE. Knight was NOT in a car crash. In a string of tweets, the real (and alive) Knight wrote, “Some of you will be glad to hear this, others strangely disappointed, but….I am alive and well!”
“Regrets to my friends and family who were shocked this morning and the family of the woman who actually died in my ‘supposed’ accident,” he added. While the new site “TMZ.Today” may claim this is “parody” — and debatably protected under the law — Gossip Cop finds this, like previous death hoaxes, to be 100% disgusting. Interestingly, the fake blog has removed its “Contact Us” and “About TMZ.Today” links on the bottom of the site. We’ve reached out to Harvey Levin of the real TMZ to see if his site will take any legal action against the site, but we have yet to hear back. Gossip Cop will update.
