Warren Sapp Arrested For Soliciting Prostitutes After Super Bowl [UPDATE]
Warren Sapp was arrested for assault and soliciting two prostitutes on Monday. The Hall of Famer, in Arizona to cover the Super Bowl for NFL Network, was taken into custody in Phoenix at approximately 7 a.m.
According to police, two women hired “as escorts” went to Sapp’s hotel room, where an argument erupted over money. At one point, things escalated into a physical altercation, and the women were injured. Cops were called to the scene, where, according to TMZ, Sapp “was questioned and admitted involvement in the act of prostitution, but denied assaulting the females.”
The two prostitutes were given citations but released. Sapp was booked on solicitation and assault charges. After initially being suspended indefinitely from NFL Network pending the results of the police investigation, a spokesperson confirmed late Monday afternoon that the former athlete had been fired. “Warren Sapp’s contract has been terminated, and he no longer works for NFL Network,” says the rep.
Earlier, a hotel spokesperson said of the Sapp situation, “We were contacted by the Phoenix Police Dept. today in a matter involving a guest. We are cooperating with police as they look into the situation since it is an active investigation. We have no further comment.”
Sapp competed on “Dancing with the Stars” in 2008, paired with professional dancer Kym Johnson. He’s recently been working as an analyst for NFL Network. Sapp starred on defense for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders from 1995 to 2007. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013.
Sapp is divorced from Jamiko Vaughn, with whom he has two daughters. He was arrested in 2010 and charged with domestic battery while covering that year’s Super Bowl in Miami. Those charges were later dropped, but Sapp was charged with domestic violence again in 2014.
Last month, CBS Sports basketball analyst Greg Anthony was arrested in a prostitution sting in Washington, D.C. He was suspended indefinitely. Gossip Cop will have updates on the Sapp situation.
