Viola Davis “Fences” Interview On “Today” Show – WATCH VIDEO!
Viola Davis discussed Fences and the Oscar buzz surrounding her work in the movie on Wednesday’s “Today” show. Watch below!
The upcoming film adaptation of Fences is based on the August Wilson play of the same name. Davis and Denzel Washington both won Tony Awards for their roles in the critically-acclaimed Broadway revival in 2010. Now they are reprising their characters in a movie version directed by Washington himself.
While not in theaters yet, Davis has already won a Critics’ Choice Award for her portrayal of a devoted wife struggling with her husband’s regrets. She’s also garnered Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations. An Oscar nod seems like a sure thing.
But Davis remains as humble as ever. When Hoda Kotb noted that Washington has already said “this is Viola’s year” and pointed out that it seems like her life is “coming to a crescendo,” she acknowledged something feels different this time around. “But it’s not just because of Fences and the awards,” Davis explained. “It’s probably because I feel more comfortable in my skin at 51. I didn’t expect that to happen.”
Of working with Washington, Davis also said, “I think there’s an easiness because I just like him. I just like him. I’m a friend and a fan.” The actress also spoke about how her poor childhood has led to an appreciation for life, and even quipped that her daughter is “6 going on 35.” Check out the full video below!
