Vice President Joe Biden ESPYs Video: Watch Craig Sager Get Jimmy V Award For Perseverance
Vice President Joe Biden presented the Jimmy V Award For Perseverance to Craig Sager at Wednesday’s 2016 ESPYs. Check out the video below.
Taking the stage at the Microsoft Theater, Biden spoke of his Moonshot initiative, which is working to fund a cure for cancer. He said of the cancer-stricken Sager, “We honor Craig, a man of courage and loyalty with a helluva team behind him.” A beloved basketball broadcaster for Turner Sports, Biden noted, “He teaches us how to live with perseverance and passion.”
And like the vice president, Sager was given a standing ovation when he came out. After the two men embraced, the veteran sportscaster said, “First of all, thank you, Mr. Vice President for the kind words.” Sager then expressed his confidence that “one day soon, we’ll wipe out cancer,” and later said he’s “confident” he’ll continue to watch the sports world’s “amazing feats.”
And, despite his illness, Sager insisted he’s more appreciative of life than ever before. “I will never give up, and I will never give in,” he said. “I will continue to keep fighting — sucking the marrow out of life, as life sucks the marrow out of me.”
The Jimmy V Award For Perseverance was started in 2007, and is named for Jim Valvano. The late basketball player, coach, and broadcaster gave one of the most inspirational speeches of all time at the very first ESPYs in 1993, just two months before he died of cancer. In his memory, the honor has been bestowed on others who have shown great bravery and determination in the face of life-threatening obstacles.
In 2015, the award was given to Devon Still and his daughter Leah, and in 2014, the recipient was Stuart Scott, who died of cancer less than a year later. Sager was announced as the 2016 recipient in May, as he battled a recurrence of leukemia. It was only revealed on Monday that Biden, whose son also passed away from cancer, would lead his tribute.
