The fact that Britney Spears’ video for “hold it against me” made the list — the video where even her die-hard fans couldn’t deny her stiffness when dancing, her slow and sluggishness movements and the ridiculous amount of product placement made the list.

And a Nickelback video made the list?

Oh wait….this list is made by VH1. Carry on. No one should be surprised.

  • Priscilla

Britney is flawless at all times. Disregarding your ridiculous comment, I am a die-hard Britney fan and I’m damn proud her video made this list.

  • Austin

Where is lil Wayne u got to be kidding me. Tha carter 4 was one of the best albums this year and how to love was huge, he should have been on here

  • Brooke

Party Rock Anthem definitely should have been top 5, why was it not on the list?

  • Danny

Hold It Against Me was a solid return after her greatest hits album. The video was very artistic and the story it presented was very well done. Showing how Britney got married and broke down and almost destroyed her career and then got up to the top again. I’m surprised it charted so low on the list to be honest.

  • Robsessed1986

    Adele is awesome!!

  • Chris

rolling in the deep was the most boring music video ever made… terrible countdown… absolutely terrible. Gaga got screwed for sure.

  • sky scraper

demi lovato made the list xtina made it see thats real music u c no gaga biber anti jayz and no kim kardashian oh wait she cant sing she s a diva oops i did it a gain

  • Annie

Danny, Priscilla – Britney Spears never sings live and can no longer dance. The one things she used to be good at, which is dancing, she can’t do anymore.

And the video was shameful. She was upstaged by her own dancers and she’s professionally trained. It’s sad how ppl can’t admit how far she has fallen in terms of performance ability. If she can’t sing live, she should at least be a great dancer. She’s neither.

Stop making excuses. Britney from the year 2001 is long gone.

  • Ramon8239

Were the fuck is Kanye?!?! Why isn’t he number 1?

  • Jdjdhdbdy

I did not understand anything you said. Jay Z is the best though.

  • Tony

There are definitely songs our there better than ALL of these songs that came this year, but out of this list, E.T. should’ve been #1.

  • Stab Bruno Mars

I think Yonkers should be on here.

  • In his god damn esophagus

    number 1 video for sure

  • MCR!!!B!TCH!!! xP

    no my chemical romance!!!! -_-

Where the heck is Party Rock Anthem? Or Otis?

  • Onelove

    What the fuck?!?!?
How the hell was super bass #32. That was one of the most biggest popular songs of 2011. Thats bs at the least it shouldve been top 5. Smh who comes up wit these ridiculous list. And katy perrys firework didnt even make the lis lbs. So dumb

  • zach

the carter 4 was terrible, you gotta be joking. and this list is based off of videos not songs, his videos were weak. tyler the creator deserved to be on this list, he won a vma, that should say something

  • Misbuddacup_gen

So you mean to tell me rihannas man down didnt make the list that video was sooo deep wth this list is a fraud !

  • Makeurself51

On the floor is the most watched video of the year and second most watched video ever on YouTube.. Jennifer Lopez was BIG this year. What happened VH1?

  • Not Annie

However, the fact is, is that she’s on the list . Twice. Say what you will Annie.

  • TheKillersFan20

People keep saying “What happened!?” “Why isn’t *insert song here* on the list?” All of the songs you’ve mentioned, except for “On the Floor” hadn’t even aired on VH1. You cannot really expect rap songs to really play on VH1, because VH1 isn’t a rap channel, it is aimed more at the Adult Top 40 crowd. And since songs like “Party Rock Anthem” or “How to Love” were not ever in the Adult Top 40, you will not see them on this countdown, nor on VH1′s countdown. As for my opinions on the list, I think that Britney song was terrible, like most of her discography. I think “Rolling in the Deep” was pretty predictable, yet well deserved, because Adele is talented, unlike most of the people in the Top 10 of the Hot 100. Other songs I liked in the Top 10 of this Top 40 were “For the First Time”, “Pumped Up Kicks”, “Rope”, “The Cave”, and “Good Life”.

  • Jeeboo

VH1 is scared to put Tyler on this list

  • Michelle

How the heck is Party Rock not number one ! That is like THE song of 2011 !

  • Positivewizard

why is rolling in the deep number one. It was the most borring song I have evr heard. At least Who Says should be number 25. And also Grenade deserve number one than rolling in the fucking deep.

  • Positivewizard

I agree rolling in the deep was boring and terrible. The only thing she did was sit with glass all around her.

  • Robsessed1986

Maybe it’s about the music? Maybe it’s about what the song is about? It carries a lot of meaning to it, it’s about real life. That’s why I love Adele!

  • Me

Where is rihanna? Sh had a good year!!! At least one of her songs shoud be on the countdown! Sorry VH1 always had a shitty list…. Superbass should be in the top 5…….

  • Dark_mefisto21

Plop que pasó con Walk de foo fighters, bueno pense que estaría por lo menos en la lista

  • Angry

Terrible list. Regardless of it being an ‘adult’ list (even though it’s rare to find an adult older than 30 who likes this music these days) VH1 made horrible judgments. Rolling in the Deep was a great song and should be number 1, if this were top 40 songs. However, it was not. The music video to Grenade and Rolling in the Deep were horribly boring and lifeless.

Yet, that is not at all what has me so upset this year. What I noticed was not one Rihanna song. Despicable. She had 3, 4, or 5 songs that could have easily made this list. Man Down, California King Bed, and S&M were perfect candidates. We Found Love was certainly a good video as well, but came a tad bit too late. Regardless, not one of her songs made the list, even though she is arguably one of the most successful artists this year, if not the most. VH1 has fallen below my standards.

  • Dunnjanee28

Fitz & the Tantrums had a really good song & video w/”Moneygrabber”. WHY it didn’t make the top 40 I don’t know.

  • bob

I love Rolling in the Deep!!! i wonder why that was the top 40 viedo!

  • Thomas3d502

tbh i think this list is good but i think “every teardrop is a waterfall should b in the top ten

  • http://twitter.com/justy84wvu justy84wvu

Where was Till The World Ends?

  • Bianca

How is Rihanna’s “We Found Love” not on this countdown? I officially dislike VH1.

  • Ashley

Her latest tour was 75% live and she was dancing like her old self. And before now, shes always sung all her slow songs live. Most of her songs are fast and made for dancing if you haven’t noticed. It’d kind of be hard to always sing all of those live. But there are plenty of videos on youtube of her singing live and she can sing. She has a really pretty voice. And her fans LOVED this music video. I don’t think it should have ranked higher than “Criminal” though. But you need to stop talking about things that you don’t know about.
