Vanessa Hudgens Gigi Tony Awards Video: Watch Tonys “The Night They Invented Champagne” Performance Here!
Vanessa Hudgens performed at the Tony Awards on Sunday, singing “The Night They Invented Champagne” from Gigi. Check out the video below!
Before taking the stage at Radio City Musical, Hudgens and her cast mates were introduced by one of her closest pals, Ashley Tisdale. While both are primarily known for acting, they are best recognized for the “High School Musical” franchise, which allowed them to show off both their acting and vocal chops. During her introduction, Tisdale proudly announced that Hudgens was her “best friend.”
As Gossip Cop reported, it was announced last September that Hudgens would be making her Broadway debut in Gigi, playing the title character. The actress-singer first headlined a Washington, D.C.-based production earlier this year, before the show transitioned to New York for a April opening. Hudgens stars as a young woman who unexpectedly falls in love with the playboy for whom she was groomed to be a companion.
The project was first made famous by Audrey Hepburn, who starred in the original play in 1951. A movie-musical followed, and then a stage show in 1973, for which it won Best Original Score. Hudgens’ production is now considered a Broadway revival. Her co-star, Victoria Clark, scored the musical’s only Tony nomination, in the category of Best Featured Actress in a Musical.
“The Night They Opened Champangne” closes the first act in the Gigi musical, and here came at the end of the first hour of the Tonys three-hour telecast. As Hudgens, Clark, and their co-stars left the stage, hosts Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth were appropriately waiting for them with champagne. Watch the performance below!
