The U.S. women’s gymnastics team, nicknamed the “Final Five,” appeared on Wednesday’s “Today” show following their gold medal win at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Watch the interview below!
As Gossip Cop reported, the U.S. women’s gymnastics team won a gold medal during the all-around finals on Tuesday. The team’s star athletes, Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian, spoke about their victory on the morning talk show on Wednesday. First, the girls revealed how they came up with their “Final Five” nickname. “We’re the ‘Final Five’ because this is [coach Marta Karolyi’s] last Olympics and without her none of this would’ve been possible,” Raisman explained. “We wanted to do it for her just because she’s there with us every single day.”
Raisman noted the other reason for the moniker is because Rio marks “the last Olympics where there’s a five girl team,” noting, “The next Olympics is only gonna be a four-person team.” Hernandez said winning the gold alongside her teammates was “so amazing, especially to share it with these girls,” adding, “They are like my older sisters. It’s kind of like I won a gold medal with my family.”
The girls went on to express gratitude for their families, and acknowledged they wouldn’t have made it so far without their support. In fact, Biles’ brother has even been carrying around a cardboard cutout of her face as a good luck charm. However, the star gymnast did request that her parents refrain from “PDA.” Noting how her folks were caught on camera giving each other a kiss following one of her routines, Biles joked, “Yeah, parents… Please stop that. No PDA.” But she did go on to admit, “It’s cute. It’s very cute.” Watch below the full “Today” show interview with the U.S. women’s gymnastics team!
