Twitter Reacts: Joseph Fiennes As Michael Jackson In “Urban Myths” Trailer
Twitter is reacting to the first look at Joseph Fiennes as Michael Jackson in the trailer for Urban Myths. Watch below.
As Gossip Cop reported, controversy erupted last year after it was revealed Fiennes would play Jackson in a television movie about the late pop star’s supposed trip out of New York City with Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando in the wake of 9/11. The film, based on a Vanity Fair article, features Stockard Channing as Taylor and Brian Cox as Brando. But it was the casting of the white Fiennes as Jackson that sparked outrage.
Fiennes defended the casting almost a year ago, saying Jackson “definitely had an issue — a pigmentation issue,” and “was probably closer to my color than his original color.” Now that Sky Arts released the first preview on Tuesday, the backlash is heating up again.
Among those commenting is ESPN personality Jemele Hill, who tweeted, “They have Joseph Fiennes playing Michael Jackson. Maybe Tom Hanks will play Berry Gordy in the next Motown movie.” A fan of the singer, @TheMJCast, posted, “Outrageous pic of #JosephFiennes playing #MichaelJackson. WTAF..” @NaturallyTiss commented, “Did you know that ‘dressing up’ as a black person is blackface, & very racist? Because I think Joseph Fiennes knows. & yet.”
“I don’t understand why joseph fiennes even took that role. like how did he think ‘oh yah I’m right for this,'” remarked @savasavasava. @TheMJAP offered, “To the Jackson family, I’m so sorry you have to deal with another smear on Michael’s legacy. Shameful. #josephfiennes.” @yogababyjae also wrote, “Somebody help me understand this #josephfiennes/Michael Jackson mess. Trying to…but I can’t. #urbanmyths.”
And @buIIetproofsouI said, “That looks like Lord Voldemort, NOT Michael Jackson. A mess.” Urban Myths is slated to premiere on January 19. See the trailer below.
