This is Twenty One Pilots’s first time on “SNL.” Days before the bands appearance on the show, they tweeted that they were “incredibly honored to be the musical guests.
The group is on a roll. A month and a half ago, Twenty One Pilots won Best Rock Video at the MTV Video Music Awards for “Heathens.” In the video for the song, Joseph Tyler of the group is taken to prison, where we see some of the characters from the film Suicide Squad, including Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Will Smith as Deadshot. At a certain point, band member Josh Dun is let out of his cell and joins Tyler in the prison’s cellar. Moments later all the inmate walk out of their cells and head to the basement, where Twenty One Pilots gives a performance for the criminals.
The song hit number one on the Billboard Hot Rock Songs chart, number four on the Mainstream Top 40 chart, 14 on the Adult Top 40 chart, and reached number two on the Hot 100 chart. Watch the video below of Twenty One Pilots’s performance of “Heathens” on “SNL.”
