As Gossip Cop has reported, it was announced last May that the 15th season of the FOX music competition would also be its “farewell season.” Since the season premiered in January, there’s been a near-constant reminder of the impending end. From the auditions through Hollywood Week and onto the live shows, host Ryan Seacrest, the judges, and the contestants have all talked about who would be the final winner.
Over the last few months, an abbreviated time-frame compared to years past, the list of possibilities got shorter and shorter. Last week, Top 4 contestant MacKenzie Bourg was eliminated. And on part one of the finale on Wednesday, Top 3 finalist Dalton Rapattoni saw his journey come to end.
That left Trent Harmon and La’Porsha Renae with one last chance to win over America and go down in history. Now votes for their final performances have been tallied to determine the winner. For the final time, Seacrest said to “dim the lights,” and…
TRENT HARMON was named the WINNER! Cue confetti. Cue tears. Cue the end of an era. Crying in shock, Harmon said afterward, “I worked so hard. I know that I had a God-given ability, but I didn’t want to take it for granted. I wanted to work so hard, and [Renae] pushed me to do it.”
Harmon will be signed to Big Machine Records, run by “Idol” mentor Scott Borchetta. And as dozens of alumni returned for the grand finale, there’s clearly a lot to live up to. He follows in the footsteps of Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze, Scotty McCreery, Phillip Phillips, Candice Glover, Caleb Johnson, and Nick Fradiani.
