Adam Sandler Beats Tom Cruise but ‘Toy Story 3′ Still on Top

BOX OFFICE

(Sony)

UPDATED

It was a big weekend for toys and overgrown boys.

Toy Story 3 , once  again, wins the weekend box office, earning an estimated $59 million to take the top spot.

Meanwhile, despite less than stellar reviews, Adam Sandler had yet another big summer opening with Grown Ups. Co-starring Kevin James and Chris Rock, the film earned $41 million to capture the #2 spot in its first weekend.

The heavily marketed Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz action-romance Knight and Day debuted in third place at $20.5. And holdovers The Karate Kid and The A-Team rounded out the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

Box office stinker Jonah Hex nearly tumbled out of the Top 10 altogether with a paltry weekend take of just $1.5 million.

I saw Grownups yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very funny. Sandler at his best. Glad it did well.

I enjoyed Grown Ups, too. Is it Sandler’s best? No, but it gave me an afternoon with laughs(some embarrassingly out loud), familiar faces, and Sandler always has music in his movies that takes me back to those wonderful original MTV days…I hope that some of the faces in this movie will join Adam in future ventures. We have the usuals for more than a decade; Blake, Buscemi, Schneider, etc…along with the more recently added James. I would be happy to see more Rock, Meadows, and Rudolph (We’ll take whatever Chris will give us)

Tom Cruise is a selfish contolling little boy whose actions have crossed from the point of affecting just the “small, insignifcant, people”(sarcasm inserted) like Katies old friends to now affecting the earnings of huge studios and co-stars. I love Peter Sarsgaard, but hell will freeze over before a pay a dollar to see Tom Cruise.

Of course none of are surprised about the figures for Toy Story :-)
