Tom Gabel of Against Me! Reveals He’s Transgender, Becoming Woman

Tom Gabel of the punk band Against Me! has revealed plans to become a woman named Laura Jane Grace.

The transgender rocker says that he’s suffered for years with gender dysphoria and intends to transition through hormone treatment, electrolysis and potential gender reassignment surgery.

Gabel will remain married to wife Heather, with whom he has a two-year-old daughter.

The Against Me! singer made the big revelation to Rolling Stone, telling the magazine, “I’m going to have embarrassing moments, and that won’t be fun. But that’s part of what talking to you is about — is hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind.”

    i understand that he has “gender dysphoria” or whatever but does he even realize how confusing that will be to his two year old child? how is he going to explain to her that daddy is now mommy #2?

    There are always real-world realities that are tough to explain to anyone; out of everyone, children seem to be the most understanding, imaginative, and loving demographic. Everyone has hard times they face in life and this kid will be no different, makes people stronger and gives them character. Props to his wife for standing by him, her path isn’t going to be easy either.

    He’s wrong if he thinks people will be kind when he changes. As a transgender myself, I was naive to think the same before transitioning. The abuse, both verbal and physical is palpable.

    Children are incredibly resilient and kind. It’s adults – parents and caretakers who react to them falling and jump, which makes them cry in pain. Not that it doesn’t hurt or they shouldn’t cry, but often it’s not THAT big a deal. Same with life . . . They just accept and deal, UNLESS an adult points out something that’s not right to them and it passes on to the child. Hatred and racism are not part of a child’s mind – it has to be taught, as does any lack of self-confidence, because we are all born fearless.

    I’ve never heard of this person or the group either, but of course, wish him and his family well in a cruel world, full of doubts that we should have evolved out of long ago.

    Wow. Okay, I don’t know his band or him at all, but I do know that a married man with a child doing this is thinking more of himself than anyone else. Not only will he confuse his child and set her up to be ridiculed (sad fact) but he’s making his wife a lesbian essentially and setting her up for a life she didn’t intend to lead, and can you even really do that?

    He is not “making her” a lesbian. Obviously, she is choosing to remain married to him. I personally believe that people fall in love with other people sometimes, regardless of their gender. Perhaps she loves the person enough to stick with him as he becomes a she. I also don’t think that people should sacrifice who they are for other people. If he is really a woman in his mind and soul, why should he have to remain a man to please other people? Talk about a wasted life.

    This psychologist is telling you that it will not be as difficult for a 2-year old as it would an older child, as far as the confusion aspect goes. There are a lot of same-sex parents with amazing children that raise them successfully. It would be more of a co-parenting situation than “making his wife a lesbian.” She would probably still be free to pursue another romantic interest if she so chooses. The most important thing is that both parents are active in the child’s life.

    Ok, my first thought was “This is good reason for guys not to get full arm sleeves of tats…it will look awful on HER” – lol. What a tough road this person and family will have. Good luck with the transition – glad you aren’t living a lie anymore.

    The more people in the spot light, who have the courage to be who they really are the more accepting the world will get. It is horrible that anyone should have to put up with the kind of abuse you deal with on a day to day life.

    But why would he do that? Why does he feel like a woman? Could that be just some fake temporary feeling? Would he lose his penis too??? And what if he wants to become a man again?

    And how come he’s not attracted to men then, as I read somewhere, while he’s still feeling like a woman…? Whom is he attracted to then…? Women?

    I don’t know… I think he’s just a bit confused with what he really wants and needs… I think he just needs to try something with a man, if he hasn’t already, but I think he already has… That’s the only reason he would still pursue his dream of becoming a woman…

    Though I still find him very attractive as a man and he could still be with men as a man… It would be a big waste if he becomes a woman instead because he won’t be as attractive as a woman I guess… :(

    Your allowed to have your opinion and I dont think that anyone should attack you for it. That being said, I hope that your christianity swings both ways and that should you encounter any one that has gender dysphoria, you treat them with the respect and kindness that they deserve. While it may sicken you, it also doesn’t affect your life as a whole. People use their faith as an excuse to judge and condemn, meanwhile they are missing the whole point of the love, acceptance and forgiveness that Jesus advocated. I don’t think it’s my (or yours) responsibility to make sure everyone else is living according to YOUR faiths doctrines, so worry about yourself and how ignorant YOU sound

    P.S. At conception, gender is determined by chromosome characteristics – and it will be the male (or rather the male’s sperm) that dictates whether the baby will be a boy or a girl.
    Prior to conception, the unfertilized egg carries an X chromosome while the sperm can carry either an X or a Y chromosome. The gender of the baby comes down to one simple event:
    •If the sperm carrying an X chromosome fertilizes the egg, a girl will be conceived.
    •If the sperm carrying a Y chromosome fertilizes the egg, a boy will be conceived

    ***Just so any confusion is cleared up about how gender is determined…while it’s entirely plausible that we are products of a higher power…I really dont think he’s up there with a magic wand, making us boy or girl in the womb

    Is he going to stay with the band as he goes through all the transitions and sticks with it once he becomes a she (we need more kick ass female guitar players)? I don’t know this band as I don’t kept up with the ‘new’ stuff. Although I think it would be great if he doesn’t shy away. Transgender people need a strong vocal advocate.

    How does that same theory work when someone is born without arms or legs and get fitted with a prosthesis? Your god would have given them limbs if they were meant to have them, right? Same thing when people get sick and doctors play god by giving them medicines or an operation to fix something . . . Your god would just let them suffer in pain or die early without any medical intervention, right?

    We all start as female and hormones stimulate the fetus to change it into a male. I’m simplifying this thought, so it might not be correct to say it this way. Perhaps you can explain it better, so Emily understands. ? ? ?
