Tom Cruise Threatens to Sue National Enquirer For “House of Horrors” Cover

Tom Cruise is threatening to sue the National Enquirer after the tabloid ran a cover story this week claiming the actor was verbally abusive to Katie Holmes and kept their daughter Suri locked in a “tiny, windowless room” when she was a baby.

As Gossip Cop was first to report, a rep for Cruise called the story “made up garbage,” and a friend of Holmes similarly dismissed it as “not true.”

Now, in a blistering letter obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Cruise’s lawyer Bert Fields blasts the Enquirer’s parent company American Media for “false and vicious lies” which he says will cause his client to suffer “hundreds of millions of dollars of professional and personal damages.”

The actor’s lawyer goes on to write, “We intend to hold American Media, and everyone who participated in the perpetuation of this scurrilous attack, jointly and severally (sic) liable.”

Fields adds, “Your cover tells the world in huge red and yellow headlines that Mr. Cruise’s home is a ‘HOUSE OF HORRORS!’ Mr. Cruise’s home, which you have pictured, is by no means a ‘house of horrors.’ It is a gracious and loving family home.”

He notes, “Contrary to your blaring headlines, Mr. Cruise has not engaged in any “abuse” or “humiliation” of Katie Holmes. Nor has he ever subjected her to any ‘punishments.’”

Fields concludes by demanding that the Enquirer “immediately retract each and every one of your false assertions about Mr. Cruise with the same prominence and emphasis as you gave your original false and defamatory assertions.”

Gossip Cop has reached out to Cruise’s lawyer, as well as a rep for American Media.

    The National Enquirer needs to be sued and this letter from Mr. Fields looks pretty serious. I hope he follows through.

    Tom Cruise, please, please sue the American Media. Now is the time for the other celebs to jump in on it to run them out of business for the defamatory articles they have written about them. When you go as fast as the National Enquirer was going with so much hurt they have done with a lot of celebrities lately, they are bound to stumble up the wrong path with somebody who will not tolerate what damages they have done or will do. I really expect for some other celebs to come out with the same thing. This tabloid has been ruthless. I have been praying for this to happen. God might not come when you want him to and the way that you want him to, but he is always on time. If this isn’t true Tom, then you have every right to sue. Amen.

    Sue the bastards for the shite they sell. Probably the Enquirer isnt selling too many copies and they are jumping on this story with lies. Tom adores Suri and would never do anything to harm her.

    It’s funny how everyone hates the NE but everything they’ve printed (John Edwards, Chris Hansen, etc) has pretty much been true. I think celebs hate them because they’re right most of the time.

    The only reason it is true is by chance, but there is a WHOLE LOT of untruth that they have published and all is ridiculous. They are just plain awful! A lot of things that people call in to tell them is NOT TRUE. Some of those people that call in to tell them things are the celebs’ enemies. It’s a shame that they pick on the same people all the time. No way in heaven those people have being doing SO MANY ridiculous things. But if Tom has proof that those things are not true, then yes sue them. I bet American Media is doing their best to settle outside of court and push this under the rug. America doesn’t need this type of thing. Too much negativity. They are messing with those people private lives. Celebs can settle their own problems without them dipping in it. Katie Holmes is doing a great job without those low tabloids meddling in it. She doesn’t need them and it’s none of anybody else business.

    They claim there is a germ of truth in every story like this! I dont believe everything published in the scandal rags, but stop and THINK! For one minute!
    Th Enquirer isnt stupid either, do you think they didnt realize they could be sued if it was all lies???
    They knew this before they plastered those things on the front page of their magazine! They arent stupid either! And remember guys Tom will be shelling out a lot of money to Katie! Now i know he has alot of money but even so!!
    I hope non of it is true for the sake of little Suri and katie! BUT! It makes me wonder nontheless! Just why is she leaving him?? HMMM! It gets curiouser and curiouser! Said Alice in wonderland loool!
