MAG: Tom Cruise May Leave Scientology
Is Tom Cruise leaving Scientology? Star magazine’s new cover story makes the case that after “three failed marriages, a slumping career and the fear of losing Suri, Tom is desperate for a new life” — and speculates that he may “move on” from his religion to do it.
“Insiders” for Star say it was the actor’s “unwavering devotion to Scientology that cost Tom his marriage to Katie,” and that the faith’s “stranglehold over the actor” also led to his breakups from Nicole Kidman and Penelope Cruz. Now Cruise is allegedly questioning his commitment. “Tom hasn’t admitted that he’s definitely leaving Scientology for good,” says one of Star’s insiders. “But he’s distanced himself from those in the church and has been hanging out with good friends who aren’t part of the religion.”
The magazine brings up Cruise’s “sparks” with Cameron Diaz, and explains that for romance to work between them, “Tom would have to change for Cameron — not the other way around.” (Of course, Gossip Cop has already debunked the notion that Cruise and Diaz are becoming romantic.)
Meanwhile, Cruise supposedly fears “losing” Suri over his bond to Scientology, and with Holmes maintaining custody of their daughter, the actor will be forced to “curb his zealous behavior” in order to have a relationship with his child. (Star’s recent track record reporting about Suri is also less than stellar; the tabloid’s sensationalistic claims include the rumor that the six-year-old has her own credit card and a room just for her imaginary friends.)
In the wake of the Cruise-Holmes split, tabloids have developed an entire cottage industry out of rumors about the former couple, exaggerating the drama at every turn. The latest Star story about Cruise “leaving” Scientology to find love and connect with Suri, is just more of the same empty speculation, and the tab proves it when it can’t produce any sources who will say that the actor is actually making plans to abandon his religion of more than two decades. A rep for Cruise tells Gossip Cop the Star “exclusive” is simply not true.
