Catholic League Slams The Three Stooges for Portrayal of Nuns

Truth rating: 10

(Fox)

The Three Stooges is already embroiled in controversy.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue has issued a statement criticizing the slapstick comedy (opening this weekend), in part for its portrayal of nuns.

The movie’s plot involves the clumsy trio trying to raise money for their orphanage — and includes Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Kate Upton in a “nun-kini” outfit that leaves little to the imagination.

Meanwhile, Larry David appears in drag as Sister Mary-Mengele, her name an apparent reference to infamous Nazi doctor Joseph Mengele.

Donohue claims The Three Stooges represents modern Hollywood’s “crudity and trashes Christianity, especially Catholicism.”

According to the Catholic League, the film is “not just another remake,” but a “cultural marker of sociological significance, and what it says about the way we’ve changed is not encouraging.”

In a response from FOX, the studio behind The Three Stooges, a spokesperson denied that the movie was an attack.

“The nuns that Mr. Donohue alludes to are, in fact, caring, heroic characters in the movie, albeit within the framework of a very broad comedy,” reads the statement. “And as far as the nun attire, I think we did the audience a favor by letting Kate Upton wear the nun-kini rather than Larry David — it could have gone either way.”

What do you think?

Are Upton’s costume and David’s drag performance disrespectful?

Or is all fair in a comedy of this type?

Would they do this to the Jewish faith or the Muslim faith? The answer is no. Just total disrespect for Catholic’s and I hope the movie bombs.

The movie looks like a crapfest anyway.

First of all, why should religion be made fun of in ANY way? To be completely honest, religion, or the lack of, should not be mentioned or poked fun at. It’s disrespectful and tasteless comedy meant to amuse only the largest of idiots who know nothing more than the most crude jokes imaginable. Please. Even Britain’s “sophisticated comedy” (dry humor) is better than this.

  • Sgerot

I dont think its meant to be a jab at religion. But I also agree it looks pretty bad and that makes it a lot like the originals. Its slapstick and not supposed to have any deep meaning.

Comics and religion have never mixed so this doeosn’t surprise me and yes Jews do get made fun of and often worse than Catholics do

From all the reviews I have read the nuns are the heroes who took in the three as children and the stooges are trying to save the nunnery. And while David’s character is harsh he/she is also a saintly figure by the end.

The Catholic League has no sense of humor and even less sense of proportion. There will be maybe 17 people who want to see this lame film anyway. They should save their money for bigger game–like providing healthcare for poor women and children.

You were expecting sophisticated humour, from the THREE STOOGES???

  • iyar

they insulted Jews even more by making the very Jewish Stooges into gentiles. who wrote the script Mel Gibson?

  • Eliezer Pennywhistler

They didn’t “do” anything to the Catholic faith. The orphans prevented a murder and saved the Catholic orphanage.

The one representation of Catholic faith – sisters praying over the sick girl – was entirely positive.

Stop being a grouchy grouch and find something useful to do with your life.

  • Eliezer Pennywhistler

    But it isn’t.

  • Eliezer Pennywhistler

    They do.

But Opening Weekend: $17,010,125. #2 rank in the country.

That is more than 17 people, unless each viewer is paying $1,000,000 per ticket. Ours were a little less.

Boo hoo…lighten up. All religions are hypocritical and have nothing better to do than bitch about being poked fun at…smile…it’s what your “god” wants

  • Cowtail99

This political correctness is start to make me sick ! Get a life . It,s a comedy !
Criticizing the slapstick show does more harm to the Catholic faith than the movie itself.
