The Wanted’s breakup was not their choice, Gossip Cop has learned.

According to a top-tier music source, “It’s very expensive to keep a boy band going,” and so we’re told Universal Music was behind pulling the plug on the group.

“Universal let them go,” says one music insider.

As Gossip Cop reported in January, the band announced they were splitting up to “pursue personal endeavors,” though now the truth has emerged.

And since it’s cheaper to launch solo acts, don’t be surprised if band members like Max George and Nathan Sykes release their own efforts.

Still, says our music insider, Scooter Braun is “standing by the boys” and remains The Wanted’s manager, should they re-group down the road.

A rep for Universal Music would not comment on Gossip Cop’s exclusive.
