“The Voice” Prince Tribute Video: Watch Coaches Share Memories Of Music Icon
“The Voice” paid tribute to Prince on Monday, just days after the music legend’s death. Watch below.
As Gossip Cop reported, Prince died last Thursday at age 57. While he was briefly hospitalized for a reported drug overdose earlier this month, his cause of death is unclear for now as autopsy results are still pending. But since the tragic and shocking news broke, the music world has been honoring the superstar with some special performances and emotional speeches.
The NBC music competition has now added to the mix, opening its two-hour live broadcast with the show’s stage bathed in purple light. Host Carson Daly announced, “As you can tell, things look a little bit different tonight. As everyone knows, the world lost an undeniable music icon a few days ago with the passing of Prince. Coaches, we thought that we’d take a few minutes here at the top of the show, as a show that cares so much about music, to talk a little about your appreciation for him.”
“All of a sudden I woke up and he was gone,” Adam Levine said, going on to call Prince “probably one of the most profound influences on me.” Pharrell recalled the first time he heard “Darling Nikki,” and Christina Aguilera spoke of Prince’s “legacy” and “genius.” Blake Shelton noted he had never had the honor of meeting him, but said how Prince’s music can instantly change his day.
The coaches previously discussed their admiration for the icon at a show-sponsored karaoke night just hours after Prince’s passing. Levine in particular was close to the late star, and noted to reporters that he was “lucky to call him a friend.” The Maroon 5 front man memorably covered “Purple Rain” at Howard Stern’s birthday party in 2014, video of which has since resurfaced.
Stars who have been paying musical tribute to Prince in recent days range from Alicia Keys and Rihanna to Bruce Springsteen and Elton John. Check out the full “Voice” video below.
