“The View” Debates: “SNL” Mocking Donald Trump, Sean Spicer (VIDEO)
On Monday’s “The View,” the co-hosts debated whether “SNL” and its mocking of Donald Trump, Steve Bannon and Sean Spicer is a distraction from real issues. Watch below.
As Gossip Cop reported, this weekend’s “SNL” cold open had Trump preparing for war with Bannon as the Grim Reaper. Another sketch featured Melissa McCarthy impersonating Spicer. Whoopi Goldberg now said on the talk show, “Laughter always helps, but the question is, is this the laughs America needs right now, or is it taking away from what we need to be talking about?”
The moderator herself was the first to answer saying, “We need to laugh and this is funny.” Joy Behar, who still does stand-up, commented, “I think that comedy is subversive, and there’s nothing that a dictator hates more than being made fun of.” And Sunny Hostin pointed out, “I think after 9/11, we really needed some laughter, and I think ‘SNL’ has taken the charge in this sort of satirical comedy.”
“It’s a welcome diversion from reality,” remarked Paula Faris, who added, “We all are kind of suffering news fatigue.” And Jedediah Bila insited, “Melissa McCarthy makes everything better. She really does… I mean, she became Sean Spicer.” That prompted Behar to quip, “Even Frederick Douglass thought that sketch was funny.
The joke got big laughs, and Bila noted that although she and Behar often disagree on the issues, “When you bring comedy in, I feel like it’s such a unifying moment at the table.” Goldberg, however, went on to note that for some people affected by Trump’s executive actions, there isn’t much funny about it.
And Behar also questioned whether Trump himself has a sense of humor. “He doesn’t laugh. I find that bizarre,” she observed. Check out the video below.
