“The View” Honors Nurses Following Miss America Controversy (VIDEO)
“The View” invited a group of nurses to appear on Friday’s show following the controversy surrounding co-hosts Michelle Collins and Joy Behar mocking Miss Colorado Kelley Johnson, a RN who talked about being a nurse during the talent portion of the Miss America pageant. Watch the video below!
As Gossip Cop reported earlier this week, Behar and Collins poked fun at Johnson, who wore scrubs and a stethoscope while giving a monologue about being a nurse. “That’s not a real talent,” cracked Collins, while Behar added, “Why does she have a doctor’s stethoscope on?”
The talk show hosts’ comments sparked outrage among many in the medical community, with #NursesUnite becoming a trending topic on Twitter and RNs everywhere posting their anger at “The View.” Collins and Behar both later apologized for their insensitive comments, insisting that they “love nurses,” and were making fun of the talent competition, not RN’s. However, their remarks about the nurse cost them two advertisers. Both Johnson & Johnson and Eggland’s Best announced they were no longer going to advertise during “The View.”
But women made yet another mea culpa on Friday by having numerous nurses appear as guests on the ABC show. Behar explained, “After we made comments about the Miss America broadcast and the talent performance by Miss Colorado, we heard from many of you. You let us know you were offended by some of our comments and believe me, we were listening. We apologize for our remarks and we know how important nurses are. But we didn’t want to leave it at that. So we have invited the dedicated professionals from NYU College of Nursing to share firsthand what these hard-working nurses do on a daily basis.”
One of the nurses expressed, “Sometimes we don’t feel like we’re the most respected,” and added, “But the truth is, there are countless heroic nurses and countless Kelley Johnsons that are impacting lives every minute of every day.” Collins then admitted that she “learned a lot this week” and didn’t previously “understand the challenges facing nurses.”
Collins also said, “Hopefully, by focusing on this today, we can help better understand and recognize the critical role that nurses play in caring for others and making such a big difference.” The hosts then invited a number of RNs to join them on stage, with Behar declaring, “Thank you nurses. Thank you all very much.”
