“The View” co-hosts on Tuesday debated sexual fluidity after Harry Styles said he won’t label his sexuality. Check out the video below.

In an interview released this week, Styles said he “never felt the need” to label his sexual orientation. “Everyone should just be who they want to be,” he said, adding, “I don’t feel like it’s something I’ve ever felt like I have to explain about myself.” Now on the ABC talk show, Whoopi Goldberg introduced Styles’ comments by noting that former co-host Raven-Symone faced a “backlash” for making similar remarks some time ago.

“She was ahead of her time, because more stars are following suit,” Goldberg said of her old colleague. In regards to Styles, Joy Behar cracked about the One Direction singer, “I think he should change the name of the group to several directions.” She declared more seriously, “Everybody’s fluid now. It’s a young person’s thing. In my day, it was one or the other.”

Jedediah Bila countered, “You had to say that. You weren’t necessarily feeling that.” But Sunny Hostin was in agreement with Behar on the subject. “I don’t know that everyone’s sexually fluid,” she said, going on to argue that people only use the term “pansexual” to avoid consequences of coming out. Hostin stated, “I think it comes from the fact that we’re so uncomfortable with homosexuality… It’s because they fear they will be judged if they say ‘I am homosexual.'”

Behar agreed, “We live in a puritanical society, even though there’s a lot of sex going on on television.” Sara Haines pointed out that our society has an obsession with “categories,” saying, “pansexual in our minds isn’t something that we can put in a box.” But she and Bila were open to the possibility that they don’t fit in boxes.

“Maybe I might meet somebody who can change the way I feel,” Bila said, adding, “I understand the concept of fluidity because people change.” But Hostin’s mind wasn’t changing. “I think you know. I really do. I think you know what you’re attracted to,” she insisted, though Goldberg pushed back, “I don’t think that’s true.”

She and the others tried to explain that Hostin that while she might be confident and steadfast in her own sexual identity, others really may not be sure or at least be open to changing. That led the lawyer to declare, “I learn something new every day on this show!” Goldberg noted, “And what you learn on this show is not everyone’s the same. That’s the key.” Watch the video below.
