“The View” Debates: Donald Trump Fires Acting Attorney General Sally Yates
“The View” co-hosts reacted on Tuesday to Donald Trump firing acting attorney general Sally Yates. Watch below.
On Monday, Yates said she could not order federal lawyers to uphold President Trump’s immigration executive action, prompting him to fire her. In the White House announcement, it was said Yates “betrayed” the government. That prompted Joy Behar to now crack, “A betrayal makes him sound like King Henry VIII.”
Sunny Hostin, who’s a lawyer, insisted it wasn’t a “betrayal,” saying, “What he may not understand is the job of the attorney general is to represent the Constitution and defend the Constitution, and also represent the people of the United States, not necessarily represent the president” and his views. But Jedediah Bila jumped in to say, “I actually disagree.”
“She can object to this, but her job is to enforce the laws,” argued Bila, saying, “If she objects, her obligation is to resign, not to stay and support insubordination of the laws.” But Hostin shot back, “It’s not insubordination.”
The conversation also addressed Trump’s attorney general nominee, Jeff Sessions, who previously supported Yates’ allegiance to the Constitution over the president. Now, though, Behar predicted he’s “going to bow down to Trump.” Hostin also complained, “And this is a president that doesn’t have a law degree. At least President Obama had a Harvard law degree.”
Bila and Whoopi Goldberg continued to go back and forth, quite testily, on whether Yates acted appropriately. The segment ended with the moderator flat-out telling her colleague, “You’re incorrect.” Check out the full video below.
