“The View” Supports Day Without Immigrants Protest With Empty Studio
“The View” co-hosts expressed support for the #DayWithoutImmigrants protest on Thursday’s show. Watch below.
#DayWithoutImmigrants, which is taking place today, calls for foreign-born Americans to abstain from work to show what society would be like without them, given the vital role many immigrants play in everyday life. The movement is taking place in several cities across the country, and has received encouragement on social media, where #DayWithoutImmigrants is a trending topic. Now as the ABC talk show began, the camera showed an empty studio.
When the panelists came out, Whoopi Goldberg explained why the episode opened that way. “You may have seen an empty studio at the top of the show, and that’s because today is a day without immigrants across the nation,” she said. “And since every one of us, and probably everyone in the audience, is either an immigrant or the child of immigrants, we wanted to show you what this particular show would look like without any immigrants on it.”
Goldberg then asked if there was any Native Americans in the audience, and one woman raised her hand. The moderator told her, “Glad to see you! A real American! The original!” She went on stress that, amid Donald Trump’s immigration ban, “All those senators and the guy’s that’s president is the child of immigrants.” Check out the video below.
