‘The View’ Debates President Obama Commuting Chelsea Manning Sentence (VIDEO)
“The View” co-hosts debated President Barack Obama’s decision to commute Chelsea Manning’s sentence on Wednesday’s episode of the daytime talk show. Watch the video below.
As Gossip Cop reported on Tuesday, Obama commuted the 35-year prison sentence of Manning, the
transgender former soldier convicted of leaking military documents to WikiLeaks. Manning will now be released from prison in May after serving only six years of her sentence.
Co-host Jedediah Bila strongly disagreed with Obama’s commutation of Manning, saying, “This is someone who compromised our national security. These files released by Chelsea Manning, a lot of people don’t know, were coveted and treasured by Osama Bin Laden.” She added, “Anytime you have someone that compromises the lives of fellow troops, fellow Americans, intelligence agencies – that to me is someone who is not deserving of commutation.”
Fellow host Joy Behar then asked Bila if she believed Manning was deserving of the 35-year sentence she initially received, and Bila insisted the punishment was justifiable. “This is a traitor to our country,” she contended. Sunny Hostin agreed with that sentiment, offering, “I think somebody that compromises our national security and gives military secrets over for public dissemination via WikiLeaks deserves 35 years in prison.”
Behar, however, believed it was “kind of cruel” that Manning was placed in a men’s prison, despite identifying as a woman. And Whoopi Goldberg noted, “I just want to remind everybody, we went almost two years with everybody sucking up to WikiLeaks. So you can’t be surprised that Obama says, ‘Well, if you all are that happy. Let me do this.'” Watch the full segment in the video below.
