“The View” Questions Caitlyn Jenner Supporting Ted Cruz, Hillary Clinton Flip-Flop
As Gossip Cop reported, Jenner said earlier this month that she’d like to be Cruz’s “trans ambassador” if he won the presidency, even though he’s unsupportive of the transgender community. Then, on Sunday’s “I Am Cait,” she blasted Clinton, saying the country would be “over” if the former First Lady was elected. But on Monday night, Jenner suggested her perspective was evolving when she shared a picture she took with Clinton and wrote, “#willingtolisten.”
That all prompted “The View” co-hosts to debate how committed Jenner is to her beliefs, and whether she’s put herself out there as a face in the transgender community too soon. Raven-Symone argued, “When you go through that much of a change so quickly, especially in the public eye, I think, personally, you should have taken a hiatus or a break and stepped back and really lived in the transgender world and not go right into this.”
“Yes, you have been living with this forever — for instance, take me,” the former child star continued. “I knew that I liked girls at 12 years old, but when I came out at 28, I didn’t go, ‘I’m an advocate, I’m an advocate!’ I didn’t know the struggle because I didn’t live in that world [yet]. And now she’s backtracking — there’s nothing wrong with it. You can change your mind to me anytime you want to, but I just think she needs to step back a little bit and wait. Slow down.”
Guest co-host Sunny Hostin suggested that after living a life of “white male privilege” for so long, Jenner was having trouble leaving the “bubble” of that mentality. “Now she’s going to be facing discrimination,” said the lawyer and journalist. “She’s part of sort of the minority, and I think it’s fascinating to watch her struggle with those issues. She’s experiencing things people of color and women experience all the time.”
Michelle Collins said that among her own LGBT friends, she saw a lot of people “upset” at Jenner’s offer to become Cruz’s “trans ambassador,” and now wonders if her Clinton tweet was just a response to the backlash. “I don’t know if she’s really opening [up] — I hope she is,” expressed the comedian, going on to add. “I wonder if part of it is to put the fire out a bit with the community… I don’t know if it’s real or not.”
And Joy Behar just could not wrap her head around the idea of Jenner supporting Cruz, as he’s “against everything that the transgender groups are calling for.” She even declared, “Transgenders for Cruz is like Jews for Hitler.” As for moderator Whoopi Goldberg, she seemed to agree most with Raven-Symone and Hostin.
