“Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” Wins Box Office
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials has won the weekend box office, even though it didn’t perform quite as well as its predecessor.
The Scorch Trials is the second installment in the popular YA book-film franchise. The first movie adaptation, The Maze Runner, opened to $32.5 million last year. The sequel was a little off, earning $30.3 million.
Still, that’s was more than enough to secure the number one spot in this weekend’s Top 10. Black Mass, which stars Johnny Depp as crime boss Whitey Bulger, locked second place with $24.8 million. Following in a very distant third was The Visit with $11.3 million.
Last weekend’s chart-topper, The Perfect Guy, came in fourth position with $9.7 million, while Everest, which is already getting Jake Gyllenhaal some Oscar buzz, took fifth place with $7.6 million.
Rounding out the Top 10 were the Christian film War Room in sixth, thanks to $6.3 million in box office receipts, followed by A Walk In The Woods, which nabbed seventh place with just $2.8 million. Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation earned another $2.4 million for eighth place. And Straight Outta Compton took the ninth position with $2 million. Making it into the last position was Grandma with $1.6 million in ticket sales.
