“The Martian” Lands At Number One, “Pan” Flops At Weekend Box Office
The Martian once again had the best landing possible at the box office, coming in first for the second weekend in a row. After opening last week to rave reviews and big dollars, the Matt Damon-starrer bought in $37 million this time around, easily putting it past the $100-million mark in just two weekends.
Hotel Transylvania 2 also crossed that milestone, thanks to $20.3 million and a second place finish. The good news ends there, however, as Pan, a re-telling of Peter Pan, flopped hard. While it still ended up in third place, it debuted with just $15.5 million in ticket sales. The Intern came in a distant fourth place with $8.7 million, while Sicario nabbed fifth with $7.4 million.
Rounding out the Top 10 were Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, which secured sixth place with $5.3 million. That was followed by The Walk, which took seventh with $3.7 million, Black Mass with $3.1 million for eighth place, and Everest right afterwards in the ninth position with $3 million. Just making the Top 10 was The Visit, with $2.4 million in ticket sales.
