Nick Viall ‘The Bachelor’ Premiere Recap: Who Got Roses And Who Got Sent Home
“The Bachelor” Season 21 premiered on Monday with Nick Viall on his fourth search for love on the “Bachelor” franchise. The unlucky in love bachelor appeared on Andi Dorfman and Kaitlyn Bristowe’s seasons of “The Bachelorette,” and again on last season’s “Bachelor In Paradise.” Now, he has 30 ladies vying for his heart.
The show opened with Viall at home in Chicago, featuring the requisite shots of him working out shirtless and taking a shower. He vows that he won’t let anything get “between me and a great love story.” There was also “Bachelorette” footage of Viall’s failed attempts to find love, first with Dorfman and then with Bristowe. He admitted he was “in love” with both.
After that, the action moved to his family’s home in Wisconsin, where we see old photos of Viall in high school and kicking a soccer ball with his “wise beyond years” 11-year-old sister Bella, who advises him “don’t mumble,” look the women “in the eyes,” and “don’t forget that your family loves you.”
And even though no one is more of a seasoned veteran of the “Bachelor” franchise, he still met with Ben Higgins, Chris Soules, and Sean Lowe because he said, “They’ve been there before.” He explained he was anxious beforehand. Higgins imparted such sage advice as “Trust yourself,” “Be yourself,” and “Be Nick.” Viall, Soules, Higgins and Lowe then toasted to, “May the fourth time be a charm.”
Next, viewers were introduced via video to 10 different women looking to become Mrs. Viall. First, we meet Rachel, a 31-year-old lawyer from Dallas. She said she doesn’t believe in love at first sight, but that one connect immediately. After her was Danielle L., a 27-year-old nail salon owner from Los Angeles. Vanessa, a 29-year-old special education teacher, came from Montreal to meet the “Bachelor.” She was seen speaking in French as she taught her special needs students. There was also 24-year-old Santa Cruz, California nurse Josephine, who was shown speaking to her cat and to seals by a pier. And we meet Raven, a 25-year-old business owner from the small town of Hoxie, Arkansas. She said in her town, people go “mudding,” shoot their guns and read the Bible.
Following her was Corinne, a 24-year-old, who owns a multimillion-dollar business with her parents in Miami. We find out that despite being a grown up, Corinne has a nanny name Raquel. “She does everything for me,” bragged Corinne. We’re also introduced to 23-year-old New Jersey native Alexis, who wants to train dolphins. She was also seen dressing up like a sumo wrestler. Alexis said she’s “obsessed with dolphins,” and that Viall “needs to love dolphins or this isn’t go to work out.”
After her was Danielle M., a 31-year-old nurse from Nashville, and Taylor, who’s 23, a mental health counselor and hails from Seattle. She talked about being biracial. The last woman in the video packages was Liz, a 29-year-old doula from Las Vegas. The twist was that she already knows Nick, having been the maid of honor at the wedding of Jade Roper and Tanner Tolbert, a “Bachelor In Paradise” success story. In footage from the wedding, Nick and Liz were dancing, and when a “Bachelor” producer asked if they hooked up, Liz demurred, “I plead the Fifth.”
After those video packages, Viall told Chris Harrison at the mansion that he hoped the women came with an “open mind” about him. They then began to file out of the limo. Leading the charge was Danielle L., who owns the nail salons in Los Angeles. For the most part, the ladies expressed how happy they were to meet him, and the “Bachelor” commented on how attractive they were.
Though Liz refused earlier to discuss whether she had sex with Viall, she could be heard in the limo saying that they had a “connection and chemistry” at the wedding and afterwards “had sex.” When she she stepped out of the limo, Viall clearly recognized Liz, but didn’t say anything, other than to acknowledge to Harrison that he met her at Jade and Tanner’s wedding. An incredulous Harrison asked, “You think you know one of the girls here?” to which Viall responded he was “99 percent sure.”
Of course, what would the entrances be without a few women trying to make their mark. Among the notable ones were Hailey, a 23-year-old photographer from Vancouver, who asked Viall, “Do you know what a girl wearing underwear says?” before adding, “Neither do I.” And Olivia, a 25-year-old sales rep, noted she was from Alaska and made him give her an Eskimo kiss, which is when people rub noses.
A 29-year-old pro basketball dancer from San Francisco named Jasmine G. actually brought jeweler Neil Lane with her and showed the “Bachelor” which diamond ring she wanted, as well as told Viall what her finger size is. Then there was Jami, a chef from New Orleans, who told the Viall, “I’ve got balls.” After frightening him, she stuck her fingers up her nostrils to reveal a nose ring with balls.
Josephine brought a hot dog inside a book, explaining to Viall, “You’re a weiner in my book.” They then ate the raw hot dog Lady And The Tramp-style. Brittany, a 26-year-old nurse from Santa Monica told the “Bachelor” she wanted to make sure he was clean. She then put on a rubber glove and told him to “bend over.” Next, Lacey, a 25-year-old for New York, rode in a camel and said, “Heard you like a good hump.” And just when no one thought that could be topped, Alexis emerged from the limo in a shark costume, though she said it was a dolphin. She told Viall, “I dolphinitely can’t wait to talk to you inside.”
At the first get-together, Viall chose to first talk to Rachel, and was impressed with her. He also learned ballroom dancing from Christen, a 25-year-old wedding videographer from Tulsa. And as standard practice, a number of women interrupted each other to spend time with the “Bachelor.” While Vanessa and Viall were talking about how the “stars aligned” for them to meet, Corinne stole him away and caused drama by being the first woman to make out with him.
Alexis, who was dressed like a dolphin, waded into the pool and began making dolphin noises. It sort of worked. Viall came over to her to talk, but he did point out, like others did, that she was actually in a shark outfit.
Later, Viall and Liz talked about their night after Jade and Tanner’s wedding. He right away assured Liz that her knew who she was from the minute she got out of the limo. He noted, however, that he was surprised that she didn’t want his number or even reached out to him after they had sex. Liz then said that after watching “Bachelor In Paradise” she was impressed with how “self-aware” he is.
The first impression rose went to Rachel, the Dallas lawyer. The “Bachelor” took her aside, gave her the rose, and then they kissed. But not all 30 women got roses. In fact, eight contestants were sent home on the first night, and they were Angela, Briana, Jasmine B., Ida Marie, Lauren, Michelle, Olivia, and Susannah.
