Taylor Swift hosted a “Secret Session” listening party in New York on Monday for her newly released album 1989, and on the rooftop of a building performed “Welcome To New York,” “Style,” “Out of the Woods,” “Blank Space,” and “Shake It Off.” The mini-concert, to which 89 of Swift’s many fans were invited, was sponsored and broadcasted by iHeartRadio, and Gossip Cop has some of the performances.

Swift kicked off the first of her five songs with “Welcome to New York,” which was fitting given the setting of the “Secret Session.” Next she sang “Out of the Woods,” but first explained its backstory. “This is a song that I wrote about a relationship that never felt like it was on solid ground, always filled with anxiety,” said the superstar, who likened it to “always wondering if we’re gonna make it to tomorrow, or a better way of putting it, are we out of the woods?”

Then Swift sang “Style.” She said the inspiration for it came from “how we have these kind of fashion staples that we never quite throw them out of our closet,” like a little black dress for women or for a guy that “white T-shirt that fits you so perfect.” She added that just like the way “there are trends that never go out of style, there are feelings that never go out of style. Do you see where I’m going with this?”

Before her fourth song, “Blank Space,” Swift talked about how the media likes to “fictionalize and sensationalize” her personal life. She said the press has created a “character who’s emotionally unstable and needy and clingy,” and then goes off to write revenge songs after breakups. The reality, Swift pointed out, is that she’s often at home with “my two cats watching ‘Friends’ marathons.”

Still, Swift noted that she thought it would be “funny” and “interesting” to write a song about that character, and so she penned the lyrics, “I’ve got a long list of ex-lovers, they’ll tell you I’m insane/But I’ve got a blank space, baby, and I’ll write your name.”

Swift then told the crowd, “You have been the most amazing factor in my life,” and thanked them for making “Shake It Off” the number one song in the country before singing the catchy hit.
