Taylor Swift Chokes Back Tears During Moving Stand Up To Cancer Performance

VIDEO

(Taylor Swift)

Taylor Swift choked back tears at the 2012 Stand Up To Cancer telethon on Friday night, where she performed a brand-new song.

The track, titled “Ronan,” is in memory of a 3-year-old boy who died last year of neuroblastoma.

Swift was inspired to write the song after reading a blog post by Ronan’s mom, Maya Thompson, who has a co-writing credit on the song.

“Ronan” is available for purchase on iTunes, with all the proceeds going to cancer-related charities.

This is why Taylor Swift has legions of loyal fans. One song can be a total pop sugar anthem (We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together) the next song (Ronan) is a poignant whisper in the night daring you not cry when you hear it.

  • kathy

did not cry because her voice did not do justice with the song. I’m sorry but the girl just cannot sing. I counted at least 13 times where she went flat (and it wasn’t because she choked up). it’s because she just had no range or emotion when she tries to sing anything.

  • chelle

kathy…you must not have a heart in that body of yours. I bet you’re one of those people that can find something wrong with everything. Taylor Swift did an awesome job on Ronan.

  • cincinnati

I saw a clip with Jeremy Renner and Robert Pattinson too. It was really good. Great cause.

  • Cyndy

    Beautiful song.

  • Djwuggie

Seriously, you need your hearing checked. Tell us the 13 times. You are just envious that Taylor is so much more effective at communicating with her audience and truly moving them than the dime-a-dozen singing contest winners you favor.

  • Mari

Beautiful. Just beautiful. I cried. Go Taylor! All the people who say she can’t sing obviously know better then the critics and thousands of loyal fans. If she couldn’t sing, she wouldn’t be about to put out her 4th studio album, sold millions of albums, Won 5 Grammies or the countless other awards she has won. Even better, if you hate Taylor so much why are you commenting on her videos? Grow up why don’t you and find a better use for your time.

I get it. You’re more a style over substance sort of person.

  • Katejoslyn

That was such a heart-wrenching song. Thank you Taylor for using your music to touch so many hearts and spread awareness. My prayers go out to anyone suffering, or anyone who is surrounded by someone suffering. May God bless you all.

To the person that says Taylor sings flat…yep she does sometimes, I agree. Your comment was more flat though, actually you’re writing about such a thing is way out of key, so much so that you ruined the song for yourself.
I thought it was beautiful, I like that she goes flat occasionally, and writing that song from reading a blog about a little boy that died, the woman has a heart!!!! I am prud of her.

By now in her career she’s likely met a number of children who were elated to meet her but then passed away from their illnesses later on. That has to wear on you.

  • Corinna

really….critic her another time…for God’s sake. I personally think she is an amazing singer. But even if thought she cannot sing…really…this song is about the death of a little boy who died way to young…and for all the other little boys and girls whose parents will never see grow up. This is not the forum to critic and count where she went flat. The worst singer in the world could sing this and It still would be the most beautiful song ever. RIP RONAN. RIP PHIN and RACHAEL!!! I have had a niece and nephew, 2.3 and 4, die of cancer. This song was for them!!!!

  • helga

People shouldn’t criticize other people for doing charity. That’s just all wrong and mean spirited.

  • drabrasil

beautiful song for a beautiful cause.

  • Swift fan

Taylor is so talented, LOVE HER!

  • tom

Her voice is weak. So is the song. But what ever sells. That is the way it has always been.

  • Rockstar Ronan

    rockstarronan.com spread the word.

  • Regina1180

I was thinking before that giving Ronans mom a song writing credit was great on Swifts part. This way, she’ll be able to continue to earn residual money.

    Good for you, Taylor.

  • Geta Clue

No way that hack wrote those lyrics. Listen to them closely. Those words can only have come from a mother that lost her dearest child. I doubt Taylor knew all those little details about him. (And the singing sucked – as usual.)

  • Geta Clue

His mom can be the only one who wrote those lyrics. Nice gesture that gets a lot of positive press for Taylor.

  • Emily

This is the best song Taylor has ever written. Very touching, made me want to cry. So sorry for the little boys family..I’m sure he is missed a whole lot.<3

  • Thatonegirl

How is the song weak? It’s very touching and sweet. I guess you have no heart..

  • Sheisgreat

You suck, as usual. It’s a great song, very moving and sad. Sorry that you can’t get up in front of a huge crowd and sing a song so touching to millions.

  • Geta Clue

I know but in her case she should just donate money.

  • NoShesNot

This is good publicity for her. But it was time away from the Kennedys.
Keep watching the freak show and loving it.

  • Princess

I cried. I broke down sobbing. This has to be the most beautiful song she has ever written.

  • Ashruthanne

The only reason her voice sounded so whispery was because she was clearly trying to hold back tears so she could get through the song. Geez guys give her a break. She’s amazing

I watched Stand up to Cancer. Taylor Swifts self written song Ronan was quite beautiful and quite heartbreaking too. No wonder Swift is so popular. She is the real thing. I am a fan

I am truly beginning to believe that some of the people who respond on these blogs are sitting in a mental hospital with nothing else to do but make nasty comments about every single person that is mentioned on this site. What is wrong with enjoying something and saying so without others cutting you to shreds because you actually liked it and were not afraid to stand up and say so. Taylor Swift is a terrific singer and songwriter and I think for a twenty-two year old, she is very mature, and puts out great records. She is such a great role model for teenage girls…..no nose-ring, no tattoos, no weird hair, no scuzzy makeup and decent, classy clothes. What’s not to like about her. Her song “Ronan” says it all. She can write brilliant, sentimental songs, as well as rock anthems and songs that are just fun.
I hope she never reads the crap that is written about her on these sites because she definitely doesn’t deserve some of this harsh criticism.

  • alexandra

i seriously hope you get diagnosed with cancer and noone writes a song for you… your one heartless bitch.

  • alexandra

.. could you write a song. your a worthless hack hiding your face behind a computer while taylor swift beautiful young lady is singing and wiriting her heart out to make her dream come true… now think about it… should you be judging?

  • lanika27704@yahoo

When I first heard the sing I was it’s so personal has one of her siblings died. Then you hear he background information for the song and it makes it even more emotional because the pain a parent feels when they loose a children is heart wretching

  • Amanda

So sad but so sweet of Taylor Swift
