Taylor Swift: I Wrote About Ex-Boyfriend After Saying I Wouldn’t

If you date Taylor Swift, expect to be included in her music, for good and for bad.

In a new interview with The New York Times, the massively successful singer-songwriter talks about telling a boyfriend — during a breakup — that she’d leave him out of her lyrics, only to go ahead and write about him anyway.

“Of course I was like, ‘Oh, don’t worry, I won’t.’ And then I did,” says Swift.

“Look, it’s not like it was written somewhere in the fine print that I write songs about my life. If we break up, I’m going to write about it,” says Swift. “But I’m probably also going to write about when I fell in love with you. So there’s an upside.”

As for the widely held belief that her new album “Red” is in large part about Jake Gyllenhaal, Swift declines to confirm.

She explains, “I don’t talk about who it is specifically because these are real people. You try to give insight as to where you were coming from as a writer without completely throwing somebody under the bus.”

Meanwhile, fans shouldn’t read too much personal history into certain elements of Swift’s work.

When pressed for clarification on the use of big glasses and animal costumes in the video for “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” Swift explains that it’s really just a goof on indie music.

“We were trying to think of ways that we could tip our hat to the randomness of some indie music videos,” says Swift. “Why are there woodland creatures? Nobody knows. Why am I wearing floral-print pajamas? Nobody knows. Why am I randomly wearing glasses? Nobody knows.”

Later, Swift reveals that she’s racked by doubt.

“I’ve always been really, really aware of my insecurities, really, really aware. I never developed that thick skin that keeps you from letting things get to you,” says the musician.

Asked to expand on those insecurities, Swift says, “Well, I worry about a lot of things. I put out one album one week, and I’m already worried about the next one. I feel a lot of emotion throughout the course of a day. But not to the point where you need to be worried about me.”
