Taylor Swift Meets With Former Cancer Patient Kevin McGuire At ACMs (PICS)
Taylor Swift keeps her promises. One year after offering to take cancer patient Kevin McGuire to the Academy of Country Music Awards, the singer finally met the 19-year-old and his family before this weekend’s show.
As Gossip Cop previously reported, McGuire’s sister started a Facebook campaign last year to get Swift to take him to his senior prom. Unable to make the date, Swift invited McGuire to the 2012 ACMs — but he had to back out after being re-admitted to the hospital due to his leukemia. In the months since, McGuire received a bone marrow transplant from his younger brother, and his love of Swift has only grown.
Now in remission and “fully healthy,” McGuire and his family were invited to this year’s show as the guests of ACM CEO Bob Romeo. Upon arriving in Las Vegas on Saturday, the whole family met up with Swift, who graciously spent time with McGuire and posed for photos. “I think Taylor is one of those people who you don’t really see that often. Classy, sweet and kind,” McGuire told CBS Philly before the trip.
“Going through what we’ve been through… it’s symbolic, in a way,” he said of finally getting to meet Swift and go to the show. “It started my chapter with my cancer. Now it’s behind me; I can close the book on it.” McGuire’s sister added that Swift is “a big part of the reason Kevin survived, too, because she just lifted his spirits so much.”
