Taylor Swift received the first-ever Dick Clark Award for Excellence at Sunday’s American Music Awards. The special honor was presented by music icon Diana Ross. Check out the video below!

Swift, who hugged pals Selena Gomez, Karlie Kloss, Lorde, and Sam Smith before heading on stage to accept, said she was “so blown away” to receive an award for Ross, an inspiration for women like her. She went on to call Clark a “visionary,” and said she was “unbelievably ecstatic” to be celebrated in his honor. Swift closed by thanking her fans for “investing in music and albums,” and noted how much she enjoys seeing parts of their lives through their close relationship. “I’m so unbelievably happy that you want to have a glimpse into my life,” added the star.

Swift’s award was announced last week, with Dick Clark Productions, which organizes the AMAs, saying the pop star was receiving the accolade “for her historical album sales as the only artist in history to have three albums — Speak Now, Red and 1989 — each debuting with more than 1 million sold in their first week.” As Gossip Cop reported, 1989 was released less than a month ago, and has gone to record-breaking success.

The company further said the award is to be “given to an artist who achieves a groundbreaking feat or creates a landmark work. It is to be bestowed upon someone whose spirit and excellence capture the visionary passion that Dick Clark himself incorporated into everything he did.” According to Clark’s widow, Kari, Swift certainly fits the bill. “The first time Dick saw Taylor perform, he knew she was something special,” she said. “He would be thrilled to know she is the first artist to receive the Dick Clark Award for Excellence.”

Swift first took the AMAs stage earlier in the night, opening the show with the very first TV performance of her single, “Blank Space.” She was the big winner at last year’s ceremony, where she took home four awards, including Artist of the Year. It’s quite likely next year’s show will be a repeat, and the Dick Clark Award for Excellence is just a taste of things to come. Check out the video below!
