Taylor Swift Apologizes To Nicki Minaj: “I’m Sorry”
As Gossip Cop reported, the 2015 VMAs nominations were announced on Twitter, and Swift led the pack with 9 nods, including Video of the Year for “Bad Blood.” Minaj scored two nominations for “Anaconda,” but was left out of the top category, while “Feeling Myself,” her collaboration with Beyoncé, was shut out altogether. The rapper ranted on Twitter about the snubs, and some of the messages were interpreted as disses against Swift.
Minaj had tweeted, “If I was a different ‘kind’ of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well… When the ‘other’ girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination.” She went on in another post, “If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year.”
Since no “other girl” besides Beyoncé was nominated for Video of the Year, Swift thought the messages were about her, and wrote to Minaj, “@NICKIMINAJ I’ve done nothing but love & support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot.” Minaj was taken aback and replied, “Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn’t say a word about u. I love u just as much. But should speak on this. @taylorswift13.”
“@taylorswift13 I’m still confused as to why u just tweeted me when I made it abundantly clear…,” continued Minaj. Swift then responded by writing, “@NICKIMINAJ If I win, please come up with me!! You’re invited to any stage I’m ever on.” But the controversy has continued to fester, with Swift’s rumored rival Katy Perry chiming in on Wednesday night.
And, as Swift has been largely bashed for injecting herself into Minaj’s rant, when she apparently wasn’t what the rapper was getting it, the superstar is now offering an apology. She tweeted Thursday morning, “I thought I was being called out. I missed the point, I misunderstood, then misspoke. I’m sorry, Nicki. @NICKIMINAJ.”
So far, Minaj hasn’t responded. If and when she goes, Gossip Cop will update. Tell us what you think in the comments below.
UPDATE: About an hour after Swift’s apology, Minaj responded, writing, “That means so much Taylor, thank you. @taylorswift13
