Tameka Raymond: “I Was Mad” When Usher Called to Say Son Nearly Drowned
Tameka Foster Raymond opened up about her custody battle with Usher and her five-year-old son’s recent pool accident on Wednesday’s “Good Morning America.” “I was mad,” Raymond says of her reaction upon learning about little Usher Raymond V’s near drowning while at her ex’s house. “How did this happen? Who was watching him? Why was my son underwater for nearly three minutes?”
She says that Usher was the one to call her and tell her about the incident, and that the scary situation brought back memories of the tragic death of her 11-year-old son Kile last year following a jet ski accident. Raymond recalls thinking, “I’ve had this call before.” While she doesn’t “blame” Usher for what happened, Raymond explains, “I was angry that it happened on his watch,” adding that her children have never been hurt while she was monitoring them.
Asked what she wants from her continuing custody battle, Raymond says, “I would like to have my first right of refusal, which means when he is not present, the kids come home to their mom.” She acknowledges that the media has portrayed her as “bad, hell on wheels,” and that she isn’t as empowered as her famous ex to win a publicity battle. “We don’t know how to fight the machine,” explains Raymond, who says it’s “hurtful” when the press reduces her to just some “baby mama” or “gold digger.” Does she hate Usher? “Absolutely not,” says Raymond. Another custody hearing is scheduled for end of this month.
