Wyclef Jean was shot last night in Haiti on the eve of the country’s runoff elections.

The singer and one-time candidate was struck in his right hand, and is “doing well,” says his rep.

Jean was taken to a local hospital, and has since been released.

Singer and one-time Haitian presidential hopeful Wyclef Jean was hospitalized yesterday for exhaustion, his rep has confirmed.

Jean is “suffering from stress and fatigue based on the grueling eight weeks he’s had,” says the rep, referring to Jean’s failed attempt to get on the ballot to become Haiti’s next president.

Wyclef Jean’s bid for the Haitian presidency is officially over.

The electoral council’s August 20 ruling that the performer is not qualified to run for the office cannot be appealed (as Jean had planned), according to the nation’s laws.

Under article 191 of Haiti’s electoral law, rulings made by the election authority’s disputes tribunal are definitive and not subject to appeal.

Wyclef Jean is not giving up on his bid to become president of Haiti, even though he was deemed ineligible on Friday by the nation’s electoral council.

It’s been speculated that the singer and activist was left off the list of 19 candidates because of residency issues.

Jean said today that his lawyers will appeal the electoral decision in a Haitian court tomorrow. Do you think he should be able to run?
