Twitter has announced its top “Hot Topics” of 2011, and there a a few surprising entries.

Charlie Sheen was the top-trending actor for the year, and the late Elizabeth Taylor was #1 among actresses.

Thor led movies, while “Pretty Little Liars” was tops for TV and Rebecca Black was (amazingly) the biggest Twitter trend in music.

The methodology behind these rankings is not entirely clear, making some of the selections seem… odd.

In any case, here are some of the celeb-oriented rankings Twitter compiled for the year that was:

The Twitter feed of NBC News was hacked late Friday and used to spread fake alarm about a non-existent attack on Ground Zero two days before the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

NBC News has issued the following statement and apology:

“The NBC News twitter account was hacked late this afternoon and as a result, false reports of a plane attack on ground zero were sent to @NBCNews followers. We are working with Twitter to correct the situation and sincerely apologize for the scare that could have been caused by such a reckless and irresponsible act.”

The account has been temporarily suspended, but not before many of its 129,000 followers saw three heart-stopping tweets “reporting” an apparent attack at the former site of the World Trade Center.

These three tweets were the work of hackers – if you see them, do NOT circulate, even if they “appear” to come from NBC News:

“Breaking News! Ground Zero has just been attacked. Flight 5736 has crashed into the site, suspected hijacking. more as the story develops.”

“Flight 4782 is not responding, suspected hijacking. One plane just hit Ground Zero site at 5:47. #groundzeroattacked.”

“This is not a joke, Ground Zero has just been attacked. We’re attempting to get reporters on the scene. #groundzeroattacked.”

Again, DO NOT BELIEVE these tweets. There were NO plane hijackings and NO attack on Ground Zero on Friday.

Considering the actual trauma and tragedy people went through 10 years ago, and the heightened alarm this weekend on 9/11′s anniversary, Gossip Cop can’t fathom how anyone could be sick enough to prey on people’s worst memories and most prominent fears.

It seems Jesse James has moved on from his split with Sandra Bullock, and is now comfortable expressing his feelings for Kat Von D the only way two people truly in love can – on Twitter.

James took to social media last night to call the equally tattooed Von D “My other half.”

After attending the Art of Elysium charity benefit in Beverly Hills last night, Von D tweeted at James, “Thank you [for] always supporting me and believing in everything I do. But most of all, thanks for being my best friend,” to which James replied, “You make it so easy to do everything I can to show you how Amazing you are. I see it as clear as a bell. My other half.”

Selena Gomez‘s Facebook and Twitter accounts have been hacked.

The hacker has tweeted a handful of strange links, and acknowledges his or her handiwork by saying, “This account has been hacked by, PKinj0r – Aka – Prokill the Video.”

The hacker also tweeted, “Oh yeh, JUSTIN BIEBER SUCKS!!!!!!!!!” along with other expletive-laced tweets.

“Michelle Obama is pregnant,” proclaims CelebDirtyLaundry, picking up on a rumor floated on Twitter and by the fake news site, WeeklyWorldNews.

According to CelebDirtyLaundry, “The White House announced today that first lady Michelle Obama, 46, is pregnant with her third child. President Barack Obama, 49, her husband is ecstatic!”

Really?

The blog even quotes White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs saying, “Michelle Obama is pregnant… She’s about two months into her pregnancy and the President and First Lady expect to have the baby sometime in late July, 2011.”

Gibbs NEVER said any of those things.

And the rumor is completely FALSE.

It seems the rumor probably first took root in a Toronto Sun piece in which a psychic predicted the First Lady would get pregnant.

Bottom line: The only thing fertile here is the imagination of the prankster who create today’s hoax, which several unreliable blogs fell for.

Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Usher are going to sign off Twitter, Facebook and other social media – all in the name of charity.

The celebs are part of a new campaign called “Digital Life Sacrifice,” which is set to raise money on behalf of Keys’ charity, “Keep a Child Alive.”

On Wednesday, which is World AIDS Day, the stars will leave their millions of fans on various social media platforms, only to return when $1 million is raised.

“It’s really important and super-cool to use mediums that we naturally are on,” says Keys.

Additionally, other stars including Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Ryan Seacrest, Jennifer Hudson, Elijah Wood, Serena Williams, and Keys’ husband Swizz Beatz have filmed ads of themselves in coffins – dubbed their “last tweet and testament” – to represent “their digital deaths.”

“It’s so important to shock you to the point of waking up,” explains Keys, adding, “It’s not that people don’t care or it’s not that people don’t want to do something, it’s that they never thought of it quite like that.”

The money raised – via text messages – will help families affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India.

Last week, Pam Anderson announced on Twitter that she was posing, once again, for Playboy.

The blonde bombshell tweeted, “I’ve just shot another Playboy cover that will debut in January for [Hugh Hefner], at his request.”

This will be the 14th cover for Anderson.

But she’s not just doing it for the heck of it.

Anderson says, “I shot the cover of playboy (only) for a donation to waves4water.”

The charitable former “Baywatch” babe chose WavesForWater.org because the organization, founded (and promoted) by surfers, works to bring clean water to areas that need it most.

Specifically, Anderson is donating money from the Playboy shoot so that clean water can be distributed in Haiti and Pakistan, which are suffering from cholera outbreaks.

Hot on her heels, and expected to also cross the billion mark in a few days, is Justin Bieber.

Gaga took to Twitter to thanks her loyal fans, also known as “Little Monsters.”

The pop superstar just tweeted, “We reached 1 Billion views on youtube little monsters! If we stick together we can do anything. I dub u kings and queens of youtube! Unite!”

Inception star Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s older brother, Dan Gordon-Levitt, has passed away.

The actor announced on Twitter the death of “Burning Dan,” who was a fire-spinner and flow arts teacher at Flow Temple Arts School in Venice Beach, Calif.

“My super hero brother @burningdan 1974-2010,” tweeted Gordon-Levitt, along with a link to his website, hitRECord.org, where he wrote: “BURNING dAN brightly embodied that bold beastly bliss sometimes referred to as ‘the creative spirit.’ He was my chief collaborator on the foundational incarnations of hitRECord.org over the years and continues to inspire us ever the more.”

“He would absolutely positively insist that we not let this bad news deter us on our collective mission,” wrote Gordon-Levitt, adding, “That said, I might not feel up to it for a little while.”

The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

Exactly two weeks ago, 50 Cent tweeted, “I love me some chelsea handler.”

But is it reciprocal?

Though neither side is saying anything, it certainly appears there’s a budding something.

Two nights ago, Chelsea Handler and 50 Cent looked “cozy,” said a spywitness at the New Orleans jazz bar Blue Nile. They were also spotted earlier at another New Orleans place called Mimi’s.

And possibly in response to 50 Cent’s tweet, “If you a man and your over 25 and you don’t eat pu**y just kill your self,” Handler tweeted a photo of a black doll “performing” oral sex on a blonde doll with the caption, “Oh, dear.”

Greg Giraldo has died.

A successful comedian known for celebrity roasts and a stint as a judge on “Last Comic Standing,” Giraldo was hospitalized five days ago in New Jersey after overdosing on prescription pills.

He was 44.

A number of comedians took to Twitter to express their condolences. Sarah Silverman tweeted, “RIP Greg Giraldo. Belly-laugh hilarious, prolific, good & kind. A thousand oys can’t express,” and Dane Cook wrote, “Greg Giraldo may you RIP. My thoughts & prayers go to his family, friends & fans.”

Amidst cheating allegations and rumors about their marriage, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore continue to put up a united front, even celebrating their anniversary publicly on Twitter.

The duo were in New York City last week, where they tweeted about their adventures at the Clinton Global Initiative.

They also found some time Friday for R & R on their fifth anniversary, during which Moore thanked her followers for well-wishes.

On the heels of the news that Lindsay Lohan is heading to rehab, she tweeted for the first time since being released from jail on bail.

And the actress has already given a glimpse into her desire to improve herself.

“What a great place The Dream Center is here in LA… had a nice time there today, it’s so important to give back. I feel blessed,” she tweeted, adding, “All accept (sic) the paparazzi hitting one of the ministry guys. They need to be stopped. I think this is a job for The Terminator…”

According to The Dream Center’s promotional materials, the non-profit outreach center provides “food, clothing, shelter, life rehabilitation, education and job training, Biblical training and… strives to help solve moral decay, crime, drugs, gangs, homelessness and poverty epidemics that exist in our nation’s inner-cities.”

Earlier today we called Perez Hilton out for posting a completely wrong story about Miley Cyrus.

Incredibly, the bad blogger managed to top himself with an entirely fabricated story about Rooney Mara.

“Production On The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Shut Down ‘Indefinitely’ After Star Suffers Severe Injury!” exclaims a Perez headline.

“How awful!” he wrote. “We’ve just gotten word from sources in Sweden that during filming earlier this week, Rooney Mara… [was] severely injured.”

He continued, “We haven’t exactly heard what happened, but we know that the injury involves her shoulder and that she was rushed to the hospital from the set. Word is that though Rooney is a rehabilitation program to get herself back in fighting shape, filming in Sweden has been postponed – indefinitely.”

Want to know what’s really awful?

Perez’s reporting — or, rather, his lack of reporting.

The blogger, who blocks Gossip Cop on Twitter, couldn’t be bothered to fact-check this serious allegation before sounding the alarm.

A rep for Sony tells Gossip Cop that Perez’s post is “a complete fabrication.”

“There is no truth to it,” reiterates the rep, who assures us Mara was not injured.

Ryan Seacrest is going to make the official announcement on Wednesday about who will join Randy Jackson at the judges’ table when “American Idol” kicks off its 10th season.

“Say” singer John Mayer will no longer say what he thinks on Twitter.

The often outspoken Mayer has pulled the plug on his 3.7 million Twitter followers, and Gossip Cop knows why.

“With the Battle Studies Tour now at a close and a return to the studio planned, John has discontinued his Twitter account,” a spokesperson for Mayer confirms to Gossip Cop. “However, he continues to communicate with his fans via his blog as he always has.”

Mayer, who months ago said he would mostly write on his Tumblr blog, noted earlier this month that he had “passed 50,000 followers, a fraction of my Twitter base… but I think I made the right move.”

It’s hard to believe it was only one year ago that Katy Perry and Russell Brand began their whirlwind courtship.

The now-engaged couple met at last year’s MTV Video Music Awards, but weren’t quite able to relive that magical moment at last night’s show.

Perry attended solo… but she had Brand’s likeness nailed – literally.

The singer tweeted a picture of her fingernails (right), which sported decals of Brand in different poses.

“To the 1 year anniversary of our love @ the #VMA’S @rustyrockets,” she wrote. “You’re here w/us in spirit :)”

In reply, Brand, who was in New York shooting Arthur, tweeted “@katyperry I’m hosting my own awards (#RBMA’s) you win. See you wednesday (in LA).” Accompanying his tweet was a picture of him holding out a flower and an image of Perry taped to his head.

The case against Ice-T for driving without a valid license has been dismissed.

Last month, the rapper and actor – whose real name is Tracy Marrow – was initially pulled over for driving without wearing a seatbelt, and then arrested for driving with a suspended license.

The performer later took to Twitter to describe that day’s events from his point of view.

“Some punk b**ch rookie cop… Made the arrest of his bulls**t career today. Arresting the Notorious Ice T for no seatbelt… He said ‘I know who you are and I don’t give a f**k!’ That was right after I called him a punk b**ch.”

Ice-T added, “And for the record.. My license in (sic) not suspended. I don’t and never had a NYC licence (sic). I have a valid NJ licence. It was all bulls**t….”

And, indeed, it was.

“That’s what I’m talking about — dismissed!” Ice-T yelled out in a New York City court today after prosecutors did just that.

And, as Ice-T tweeted last month, he does have a valid New Jersey license; however, records in the New York Department of Motor Vehicles mistakenly noted he had a suspended license because of a lack of insurance. But Ice-T’s 2009 Cadillac is insured (and registered) in New Jersey.

Moments ago, California’s Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage, was ruled unconstitutional.

And now the stars are offering their thoughts.

Ellen DeGeneres tweeted, “This just in: Equality won!”

And Christina Applegate said, “I am crying with absolute joy! Thank you thank you thank you for letting equality win. All men are created equal! Period!!!”

Also tweeting their satisfaction with the ruling were Kim Kardashian, who wrote, “Prop 8 was struck down! This news is amazing!!!! Its about time! Congrats to everyone!” and Ricky Martin who exclaimed, “YEAHHHHH!!!!!#PROP8UNCONSTITUTIONAL MOVING FORWARD!!!!!!!!”

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger noted, via Twitter, “This decision affirms the full legal protections and safeguards I believe everyone deserves.”

Even Paris Hilton shared, “What a huge historical day for equal rights in this country! They finally overturned Prop 8! There shouldn’t be a law on true love. : )”

“LeAnn Betrayed” screams the cover of Star magazine, which claims LeAnn Rimes‘ boyfriend, actor Eddie Cibrian, has not only cheated on her with his soon-to-be ex-wife, but also wants his ex “to take him back.”

The tab alleges the former “CSI: Miami” actor has “enjoyed passionate all-night sex sessions with” Brandi Glanville, whom he is divorcing, though he is in a relationship with Rimes.

A so-called Glanville friend adds that Cibrian told his ex (who is the mother of his two children) that “she’s his soulmate and that he really wants to be with her still.”

And Glanville supposedly acknowledged the affair, telling Star, “mistakes happen.”

But Cibrian himself is slamming the report via his Twitter account, saying, “Once again my ex has stooped to a new low attempting  to sabotage my beautiful relationship with LeAnn.”

“Not surprisingly the ONLY magazine that decided to run the story shares the same credibility and delusion as my ex,” the actor continues. “They should be ashamed of themselves.”

Adds a rep for Rimes, “The Star magazine story is absolutely untrue and completely made up of lies fabricated by people who clearly have no lives of their own. LeAnn refuses to stoop to their level by acknowledging or responding to these ridiculous stories.”

It’s bad enough when someone is the victim of one death hoax.

It’s something that person’s family, friends, and fans should never have to experience.

But twice?!

After rumors wrongly claimed in February that actor-comedian Bill Cosby had died, the disgusting hoax is back again.

A firestorm of tweets today propelled “Bill Cosby died” to the top of Twitter’s Trending Topics.

Thankfully, the iconic star is just fine.

“Mr. Cosby is alive and well,” his rep confirms to Gossip Cop.

The only thing we’d like to see laid to rest are gross hoaxes like this.

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – and we’re fairly certain we’ll have to say it a lot more – for a celebrity blogger, Perez Hilton doesn’t know very much about celebrities.

Just the other day, Perez did a piece about The-Dream, and the person pictured was… not The-Dream.

Shortly before that he did a story on Miley Cyrus, and the person pictured was… not Miley Cyrus.

Today, Perez – who blocks us on Twitter because he’s afraid of Gossip Cop – has a post titled, “R-Patz And His Mom Hit The Movies,” with a picture of Robert Pattinson and… not his mother.

Perez goes on to foolishly write, “Robert Pattinson and his very youthful looking mom caught a showing of Salt at Malibu’s Cross Creek on Saturday. Awww. We love that he’s a mama’s boy!”

Pattinson was with his agent, Stephanie Ritz.

Awww. Perez’s reporting is awwwful.

Just hours before she’s due to surrender, Lindsay Lohan took to Twitter to make a light-hearted mention of her impending jail time.

“the only ‘bookings’ that i’m familiar with are Disney Films,” Lohan joked in a tweet. “never thought that i’d be ‘booking’ into Jail… eeeks.”

The comment elicited a chuckle from gal pal Samantha Ronson, who replied with her own tweet: ”well- you haven’t lost your sense of humour.”

It’s unlikely Lohan’s joking mood will last much longer. The actress will begin her 90-day jail sentence later today, though it’s likely she will serve closer to between 20 and 25 days.

“Divorce Rumors True? Dr. Phil Puts His House On The Market” reads the headline of a post by Perez Hllton, who notes the TV doc is looking to sell his 8-bedroom, 11,000-square-foot Beverly Hills mansion, which comes complete with a screening room, a pool, and a billiards room.

Dr. Phil’s desire to unload his massive home prompts Perez to ask, “Could this be another sign of divorce for the hick doctor?” 

The bad blogger even states, “The last time [Dr. Phil] and his wifey looked into selling the place, it was three years ago, amidst divorce rumors.”

Well, those rumors were false then – and so is this latest pile of junk.

Unlike Perez – who blocks Gossip Cop on Twitter because he’s afraid of us – we fact-check stories.

And a source close to Dr. Phil assures us that the Cop Blocker’s divorce insinuation is “ridiculous.”

But wait, it gets better.

Not only is the selling of their house not indicative of an impending divorce, but rather it’s a sign of their commitment.

Dr. Phil and his wife just “purchased another house” together, says our insider.

As Gossip Cop reported, Jake Pavelka and Vienna Girardi have split up, but leave it to The Hollywood Gossip to report that cheating was the cause.

So who allegedly strayed?

The blog claims Girardi was seen flirting with actor Gregory Michael, leading Pavelka to believe she cheated.

“We don’t want to throw Vienna under the bus without hard evidence,” says the site, which adds,  “but come on.”

Girardi, however, is publicly stating that the allegations are “100% False.”

She took to Twitter today to state, “The accusations of me cheating are completely fabricated.”

Like on “The Bachelor,” we expect there to be more dramatic twists in the coming days.

Pamela Anderson has immersed herself in the BP oil debacle.

The former “Baywatch” star and “Dancing with the Stars” contestant is circulating a petition to impose sanctions on BP for the massive spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Anderson posted a link on both her Facebook and Twitter pages to a petition titled, “Tell EPA: Take away BP’s billions in federal contracts.”

The petition, drawn up by the credit card and telecom company Credo, which raises money for progressive nonprofit causes, notes, “The White House, the Department of Interior, and Congress are all crying foul, but they are not taking action to hold BP accountable. If the Obama administration is serious about making BP pay, there is a very simple and powerful tool at its disposal: the EPA can take away BP’s billions in federal contracts.”

Who knew Pamela Anderson would take such a stand?

She’s sold millions of records, and now Britney Spears has broken a new record.

The pop princess has become the first person to break the five million followers mark on Twitter.

Earlier this week, Spears (@britneyspears) overtook reigning social media king Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) for the most followers on the site.

At present, Spears has 5,014,759 followers. Next is Kutcher with 4,985,181 followers.

Keep an eye out, though, for Lady Gaga (@LadyGaga) who currently has 4,249,607 followers.

The “Paparazzi” singer has been busily using Twitter to connect to her fans, and the speed at which her follower base is growing makes her a serious contender for the top spot in the not too distant future.

Heidi Montag has taken to her Twitter account to slam reports that claim she’s unhappy with her post-plastic surgery body.

“My last surgery was the BEST decision of my life!” she tweeted today. “Anything else anyone says (family members who are trying to make money off of me) is a lie!”

The reality starlet added, “I have never felt sexier, happier, or more amazing in my own skin. I truly look the way I have always dreamed, I love America and freedom!”

She also warned fans not to believe the so-called sources often quoted in the tabloids.

“I HAVE NO FRIENDS,” she said. “The ones who are pretending to be ‘friends’ or ‘family’, are crazy, angry, broke, and bitter this is why… they haven’t been in my life for years! LIARS!“
