Not to be outdone by The Sun, the folks over at The Mirror have come up with their own entry in the contest for “Most Clueless Interpretation of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart‘s MTV Movie Awards Appearance.”

You’ll recall that while accepting the award for Best Kiss on Sunday night, Pattinson darted from the stage and into the audience, where he kissed Taylor Lautner.

Anyone watching understood that it was a planned, cute moment designed to get a laugh.

Well, we thought anyone watching understood that.

“As 7,000 fans watched in stunned disbelief Robert Pattinson snubbed Kristen Stewart and snogged her mate instead,” cries The Mirror. “Her male mate.”

Wait.

Pattinson “snubbed” her?

The Mirror is taking this seriously?

Wow, does it ever.

Stewart was allegedly so furious and shocked when Pattinson kissed Lautner instead of her, she “tore a strip off the vampire heart-throb” backstage, yelling, “You made me look like a total jerk out there!” Then, when Pattinson supposedly defended himself, The Mirror claims Stewart muttered, “Don’t even bother” while brushing past him.

Um… it was planned.

Pattinson planned to kiss Lautner.

Stewart knew he planned to kiss Lautner.

That’s why MTV’s camera cut to Lautner when Pattinson joked on stage about wanting to kiss someone besides Stewart.

It’s why you Stewart smiles and says, “Go get him!” as Pattinson bounds into the audience.

The whole thing was a play on the whole “will they or won’t they kiss” game the couple enacted in the past while on stage for the exact same award.

What is so difficult to understand here?

“Despite her public humiliation, Kristen and Robert patched up their differences, and were later holding hands and giggling,” observes The Mirror.

Um, the only “humiliation” should be the newspaper’s for printing such nonsense in the first place.

“Madonna ditches Kabbalah for Opus Dei,” declares the Mirror, which claims the singer has decided to trade the faith she’s followed for fifteen years in favor of the Catholic sect made famous by The Da Vinci Code.

According to the British tabloid, Madonna is “intrigued by the organisation and spent Friday with priests from the centre’s London HQ.”

A so-called source tells the paper, “She has started exploring different religions,” and notes, “Madonna has always been intrigued by Opus Dei.”

So, is the “Like a Prayer” singer really considering joining the controversial sect?

Nope.

A rep for Madonna tells Gossip Cop the Mirror‘s story is “completely untrue.”

“Two girls sneak into Justin Bieber’s hotel room,” reads a deliciously dishy headline from The Mirror.

According to the tab, “Justin Bieber was furious after two of his teenage fans sneaked into his suite – dressed as hotel cleaners” at the Hard Days Night hotel in Liverpool, where fans rioted last Thursday.

Bieber was “particularly outraged,” notes the paper, that the 16 and 18-year-old girls took photos of some of his “highly personal” belongings while he was out.

The young women were only caught, reports The Mirror, when “a member of the Canadian heartthrob’s security team walked in on them trying to get into his bed.”

So, how did they do it?

A source for the newspaper says the “enterprising girls snuck in through a side entrance, and stole two housekeeping outfits… After ditching their regular clothes and slipping into their new costumes, they got the lift to Justin’s suite and knocked on the door, calling ‘housekeeping.’”

Once they were inside his penthouse suite, they pretended to clean up, but instead were “taking pictures of his personal possessions on their phones.” They did that, says the so-called source, until “a member of Justin’s entourage in another part of the suite heard them giggling” and caught them in the act.

If this story sounds unbelievable, it should.

It NEVER happened.

There weren’t any girls who snuck into his room.

A rep for Bieber tells Gossip Cop exclusively, “This story is fabricated.”

“Simon Cowell signs Will Smith to US X Factor,” blares a headline from the Daily Mirror.

The tab calls the securing of Smith as a judge on the singing competition show a “massive coup.”

According to the Mirror, Cowell thinks Smith and purported judge Cheryl Cole “will be a brilliant formula” when the show begins in the U.S.

Really? That’s what Cowell thinks?

Funny, because a rep for Smith tells Gossip Cop exclusively that there is “no truth” to the story.

Smith is NOT going to be a judge on “X Factor.”

“David Beckham and Tom Cruise form Midnight Boys Bike Club for A-list Bikers,” reads a headline in The Mirror, which goes on to explain that the two megastars created a club, and “a whole host of A-list bikers have been invited to join them for midnight cruises through the Hollywood Hills.”

A so-called “source” tells the British tab, “The boys love to ride… At midnight they can get away with cruising around in a group and seeing the sights of LA without a zillion paparazzi chasing them around.”

In fact, the supposed “source” adds, “They’ve had so much fun. They are trying to get other Hollywood actors like Orlando Bloom and Brad Pitt to join the group. It’s a case of the more the merrier.”

Here’s what’s true: Cruise and Beckham ride motorcycles.

Here’s what’s NOT true: Everything else.

Beckham and Cruise have NOT formed anything called the Midnight Boys Bike Club – and for that matter, they’re also not planning to build a treehouse where members can meet and greet each other with secret handshakes.

A source close to Beckham tells Gossip Cop that they’ve never heard anything about this wheely exclusive bike club, and a rep for Cruise says there’s “no truth at all” to the Mirror‘s article.

Yesterday, the Sunday Mirror ran an article that claimed George Michael was being bullied, getting drunk, and receiving special treatment behind bars.

According to the tab, the singer “was a sobbing, quivering wreck when he was first imprisoned,” and the other inmates saw him as someone they “could rough up and intimidate” — that is, until he got another prisoner to be his bodyguard.

The paper also claimed, Michael has been drinking prison “hooch,” and once “got so drunk he stripped off and paraded around naked.”

Additionally, the Mirror‘s so-called “source” of information says, “It’s like there is one rule for him and another for everyone else.”

Really?

No.

And Michael is so angry about the tabloid’s inaccurate reporting that he’s mulling a lawsuit.

In a statement issued by Michael – and sent to Gossip Cop – he says: “Believe me when I tell you that in the last three weeks there have been no tears, no anxiety, no bullying… On the contrary, I have been treated with kindness by fellow in-mates and prison staff alike and as far as I can tell, have received no special treatment of any kind whatsoever. Unless of course some of the guys here are letting me win at the pool table.”

Michael, who noted that he’s been passing his jail time reading fan mail, adds, “As far as running around this place ‘naked’ and ‘drunk on ‘Hooch’ with an inmate for a bodyguard, let’s just say that the Sunday Mirror will be hearing from my lawyers very shortly.”

In September, Michael was sentenced to 8 weeks in jail, stemming from an arrest in July when he plowed his Range Rover into a one-hour photo shop in London while under the influence of drugs.

“Dolce and Gabbana want to sign up Rihanna,” reads the headline of a piece in the Mirror, which goes on to explain that they “want the controversial 22-year-old singer as their muse.”

Not surprisingly, gossip’s junkyard, Hollyscoop, picked up the story – without bothering to fact-check – and added, “Look out, Madonna! There’s a younger chick in town who is taking your place!”

Hollyscoop further asserted, Rihanna is “being courted to replace Madge as the face of Dolce & Gabbana.”

For the record, the Mirror piece never mentioned Madonna at all. That was a Hollyscoop creation.

Regardless, Gossip Cop looked into the story, and both the Mirror and Hollyscoop are… wait for it… wrong.

A source close to Rihanna confirms to Gossip Cop the reports are “not true.”

“Paul McCartney in frightening mob bus attack in Mexico City,” reads an equally frightening headline in The Mirror.

According to the article, which was picked up by various other outlets, “Terrified Sir Paul McCartney had to be rescued by cops after a mob attacked his tour bus in a  [dangerous] part of Mexico City,” following a performance at the Foro Sol stadium this past weekend.

A source told The Mirror, “Paul and the team were shaken up.”

Well, that’s not exactly what happened.

For starters, McCartney’s bus was not “attacked” by “a mob.” The legendary Beatle’s vehicle – as is often the case – was surrounded by fans.

McCartney’s rep tells Gossip Cop, “No one was terrified,” and the mob attack story is “very much exaggerated.”

The Sunday Mirror is claiming in an “exclusive” that “Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel split.”

If you believe all these reports, then Biel and Timberlake have had more splits than John Goodman‘s pants during a dance-off.

Still, according to today’s Mirror, Timberlake and Biel “have simply grown apart throughout the past few months and have decided to call it a day instead of try to hold things together.”

“It was mutual and they agreed it was best to part ways if things weren’t going to head towards marriage and kids,” the paper quotes a so-called “source” as saying.

The Mirror then floats the idea of a newly “single” Timberlake possibly hooking up again with Cameron Diaz on the set of Bad Teacher. The tab somehow even finds a “mole” who says, “Cameron was the one who got Justin into the film… She wanted him from the start.”

Actually, Gossip Cop already busted that wrong casting account three weeks ago.

But of more significance today, the returning rumor that Biel and Timberlake have “split” is “not true,” a source close to the actress assures Gossip Cop.

A story making the rounds today is that Madonna was in a foul mood when she recently attended a pre-Oscar party, sponsored by Grey Goose, at the Soho House in Los Angeles.

According to the original Mirror piece, which was picked up everywhere, Madonna demanded that the party’s organizers “fill her glass with her personal favourite Belvedere vodka, instead of the party-sponsoring Grey Goose brand.”

The Mirror claims that when she was informed they were only serving Grey Goose, “all hell broke loose.”

How so?

The paper’s so-called source said, “Madonna was dropping F-bombs like they were going out of fashion… She was clearly up for a drink, but wasn’t prepared to compromise on her vodka choice.”

That’s a very interesting story…. but it never happened.

Gossip Cop spent hours calling various people, who were at or involved with the Soho House, and the story simply isn’t true.

Added Madonna’s rep, “The entire thing is a lie from beginning to end.”

Just because Lindsay Lohan dated Samantha Ronson doesn’t mean she has some sort of fetish for deejays.

Around New Year’s a website reported that Lohan was “spotted getting cozy in St. Barth with DJ Jus Ske” (not true).

And now the The Mirror claims in a headline, “Lindsay Lohan is back into boys with a new man – British DJ Gareth Geno.”

According to the British tabloid, Lohan is “dating British DJ Gareth Geno.”

So what’s the proof?

While Lohan was recently deejaying at a London club, Geno “fed her chips and sorted out her playlist.”

Whoa, call a priest, a florist, and a caterer!

And though the paper reports, “She got cosy with DJ Geno until it was his turn to hit the decks,” the Mirror offers zero evidence of how.

Rather than relying on spotty tabloid reporting, Gossip Cop reached out to Lohan herself. When asked if she was dating Geno, Lohan told Gossip Cop, “Nooo I am not,” adding, “He’s a friend, geez.”

Can’t wait to see the tabs’ next deejay spin with Lohan.

Susan Boyle is living her dream and extremely grateful this Christmas.

She said, “I thank everyone for their kind messages, present and cards.”

In fact, the “Britain’s Got Talent” runner-up has so many cards, she said, “I can barely get in the door… Each and every one is so special and I’ve re-read them time and time again.”

Boyle added that she was overjoyed and humbled this Christmas by the success of her briskly selling album, “I Dream A Dream.” The singing sensation further gushed to the Daily Mirror, “It’s been an absolutely brilliant year and I can’t thank everyone enough for the support I’ve been given… I am the happiest I have ever been and truly enjoying myself. It’s been quite a year.”

“I’d like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. I’m looking forward to 2010 and all that it has to offer,” said Boyle.

Since rumors pinning Rihanna to a romance with Justin Timberlake have been busted, outlets are now trying to entangle her with another tabloid favorite — Kanye West.

The pair “flirted outrageously and dirty-danced during a wild night,” according to The Mirror. Their “champagne-fueled evening” of getting “cosy” at London spot Whisky Mist, claims the British paper’s so-called “mole,” began when Kanye and his entourage came into the exclusive club as Rihanna danced with female friends. Before long they were “chatting at length.”

When other club goers left at 3 in the morning, Rihanna “was still in a party mood,” so the large VIP group stayed until about 4:30am. Then they left.

Let’s recap. Two giant stars who have worked together professionally hung out at an ultra-exclusive club, each accompanied by many friends. They talked. There was music and dancing. Then the party ended, and they parted ways.

Sorry, but Gossip Cop isn’t sure how outlets like the Mirror can call this a “love lock-in” with a straight face. There was nothing untoward or “outrageous” about it, and Kanye is still boyfriend to model Amber Rose.

Seems like a London fog clouded the “reporting” at Whisky Mist.

Rihanna never ever said, “I could see myself in a relationship with a girl.”

Nevertheless, the quote was attributed to her, and rumors of her being a lesbian have exploded all over the Internet and onto the pages of numerous newspapers.

The Mirror, for instance, wrote: “Rihanna has revealed she is attracted to women – and would love a fling with Hollywood stunner Megan Fox.”

The article continued, “The Umbrella star – who was badly beaten-up by her ex boyfriend Chris Brown in February – said could see herself with a girlfriend in the future. The Barbadian singer said: ‘All humans are born with the ability to be attracted to both sexes. I mean, I could see myself in a relationship with a girl.’”

And websites like StarPulse similarly reported, under the headline “Rihanna Is Open To A Lesbian Romance,” that she “won’t rule out a same-sex romance,” having said, “All humans are born with the ability to be attracted to both sexes. I could see myself in a relationship with a girl.”

Again, the problem is Rihanna NEVER said those words – Megan Fox did.

In the original interview, upon which all this false information disseminated, Rihanna told the Daily Star – in response to whether she would like to break into acting — “I’d love to be an assassin. Either that or a lesbian. Maybe both! Hey, a gay assassin, there’s nothing hotter than that.”

And when asked who she would like to play opposite, “She purred: ‘Megan Fox – hands down. She’s yummy. She’s hot.’”

Here’s where the (sexual) confusion comes in…

The Daily Star then wrote that Fox “has never been shy about her penchant for… the ladies. She said: ‘All humans are born with the ability to be attracted to both sexes. I mean, I could see myself in a relationship with a girl.’”

Many outlets mistook the “She said” to mean that Rihanna uttered those words when, in fact, it was a quote Fox gave to the October 2008 issue of GQ, though, for full disclosure, the “Transformers” star also prefaced it with “I’m not a lesbian.”

While several outlets out there should be sorry for their wrongly reported stories, Gossip Cop would like to apologize to the guys out there whose TWO fantasies we crushed in one single post.

Since dozens of stories about Britney Spears getting engaged Down Under went belly up, outlets like The Mirror are moving rumors along by helpfully placing an engagement ring on her finger.

Spears “scrubbed up well in a plush mustard jacket after dinner with her beau and manager Jason Trawick,” the paper reports, “But it was the sparkler on her wedding finger that nearly blinded us.”

That’s not some of the information the Mirror provides.

It’s all of it.

In a journalistic triumph, the Mirror fails to give the “what,” the “when,” or the “where” of this supposed sighting, and illustrates the item with an unrelated photo of Spears that shows neither of her hands.

Oh, but they do include an obligatory and always informative  ”Oops!… I did it again” reference!

“Is love Blooming again for our Jen,” reads a headline in the Mirror, which tries to link Jennifer Aniston and Orlando Bloom.

The article tauntingly asks, “If they’re just good Friends, how come Jennifer Aniston and Orlando Bloom seem so keen not to be seen together?”

Aniston and Bloom both landed in London’s Heathrow airport yesterday, but didn’t want to be photographed together, which caused some journalists and bloggers to speculate that they were hiding more than just their faces.

The Mirror even reports that they “were seen sneaking off together in a car outside.”

Hardly sneaking.

In fact, Aniston and Bloom were spotted later… in Morocco!

They were both at a bash for the re-opening of Marrakech’s famed Hotel La Mamounia.

Oh, one more thing: Bloom was at the party with…  girlfriend Miranda Kerr.

Gossip Cop fully understands what Aniston and Bloom had to contend with. We’re still battling rumors from that same time we were in LAX as Rue McClanahan.

Maybe the Mirror’s “3am” column should get a little more sleep because their facts are a little blurry about Zac Efron partying in London the other night.

According to the tab, the “High School Musical” star was a on “four-hour booze bender” after the premiere of his new film, “Me & Orson Welles.”

The paper claims that at the film’s after-party, held at a Hawaiian-themed club called Kanaloa, Efron got “a round of rum shots” for his co-stars and then footed the bill for some $165-a-pop concoctions called the “Treasure Chest,” which the paper describes as “a potent brew of peach schnapps and brandy, topped with a bottle of bubbly.”

Reportedly all liquored up, Efron allegedly “grabbed a Hawaiian lei garland, flung it around his neck, jumped up on the bamboo tables and started busting his moves to Beyonce and the Beach Boys.” Added a so-called source, “He was having a great time and was the life and soul of the party.”

We’d say we’re sorry that we missed it, but it actually NEVER happened. A source, who was with Efron at the after-party, tells Gossip Cop that the star, jet-lagged from flying in earlier that day, hung out a little bit with his director Richard Linklater and co-stars Claire Danes and Christian McKay, but “left early” – no bender, no booty shaking.

And Efron’s rep confirms to Gossip Cop that the story was “completely made up,” and that her client called it a night after a short stay at the club because he had to get up early the next day for press interviews.

Sorry, tabs, but we’d had to call this “High School Musical: Sober Year.”

It was bound to happen. Place Lindsay Lohan and Gerard Butler in the same room (or even in just the same country) –– voila! — you have the perfect tabloid tale since they’re both often the subjects of wrongly reported romance rumors.

And that is precisely what was done by the British papers like the Mirror, the Daily Mail, and a slew of bad bloggers.

The Mirror kicked it all off by claiming that, at the opening of the Mazagan Beach Resort in Morocco, Lohan “was locking lips with gorgeous RocknRolla star Gerard.” The tab alleged they were first “dirty dancing,” and “ended up in a corner snogging [kissing], followed by more dancing and flirting.” Next, reported the tab, “we saw them leaving together.”

Here’s what’s true: They were in Morocco.

Here’s what’s not true: Everything else.

Lohan tells Gossip Cop it’s “such a lie!”

And if that’s not enough, better look out, because a rep for Butler told Gossip Cop, “It is completely untrue and we are taking action against these claims.”

Yesterday, the Mirror – and several other outlets – reported, “Ricky Gervais goes on the Hollywood Diet,” and lost 42 pounds. It just so happens that Gossip Cop was at lunch today with Gervais, and when asked to share the craziest rumor he’s heard about himself, the comedian replied, “that I’m on a Hollywood diet,” adding, “It’s just not true.”

In fact, the “Extras” star, now in the film, “The Invention of Lying,” enjoyed a nice carbo-rich plate of pasta. (Gossip Cop had the fish.)

Gervais told Gossip Cop that while he hasn’t “lost a pound,” he has shed a couple of inches from his waist from working out.

Gossip Cop bonded with Gervais, who keeps a blog “to keep the record straight,” because, while we both love how the Internet is such a great resource, we both regret that it’s also given rise to unsubstantiated claims and people being, as Gervais said, “unaccountable.”

A Michael Jackson story in the Mirror reflects only half the truth.

Yes, a new Jackson single is going to be released. The song, recorded while the late King of Pop was rehearsing for his “This Is It” performances, was to debut during the concerts. And now a source, who worked with Jackson on the shows, tells Gossip Cop that the single is also titled, “This Is It” (as is the documentary that will be screened for a limited time).

What the Mirror went overboard with was a line about how producers in L.A. are so “worried about it getting out – they’ve hired huge bodyguards to stand by the studio door,” where it’s being put together. That’s not true.

Gossip Cop is told that regardless of the stories about the song, the single is truthfully a good tune.

A rep for Robert Pattinson has given GossipCop.com an exclusive statement regarding the actor’s supposed interview with The Mirror:

“I will only comment on matters regarding Robert’s professional life, but in order to set the record straight, Robert did not speak to the Mirror, and their claim that they spoke to him a few days ago is manufactured along with any information that they claim to have as an exclusive directly from him.”

Gossip Cop thinks we can close the book on this one.

The Daily Mirror, out of England, claims in a headline: “Twighlight exclusive – Robert Pattinson: I haven’t got a girlfriend.” Exclusive nonsense.

Let’s look at some of the facts, shall we?

First, these clowns can’t even spell “Twilight” correctly in the headline.

Next, after the “exclusive” begins, it notes that Pattinson and Kristen Stewart “were caught snuggling up together at a Kings of Leon concert in Vancouver where they’re filming the hotly-awaited movie sequel The Twilight Saga: New Moon.” Doh! They’re filming “Eclipse.”

So maybe this “exclusive” is just an old exclusive. But in the next paragraph it reads, “In an exclusive interview with the vampire just days before the pictures [of him and Stewart] were taken, heart-throb Robert insists he’s still single and adds: “I don’t have a girlfriend.”

A few things come to mind: (1) the story sounds made up (2) why would the Mirror hold onto an “exclusive” interview with Pattinson for about a week before publishing it (3) the star was in Los Angeles at around the time of the alleged interview, and Gossip Cop knows for a fact that he was not sitting down to talk about his personal life (4) the story sounds made up. Oh, did we say that already? And (5) no one from the Mirror could answer Gossip Cop’s question about when or where the interview was conducted, but said they would get back to us (we’re still waiting).

Even though we’ve established that this “exclusive” seems fabricated, we’ll still share with you a couple of “quotes” – for laughs – that the Mirror claims the incredibly popular and private star said.

Among the nuggets are “You always think you’re going to get more girls after you’ve made a movie and it never happens,” and “You sit there and you’re like ‘I’m a big movie star and I want to go out with some models’ but I don’t know why that doesn’t happen.”

It’s pieces like this that make Gossip Cop want to “Moon” the Mirror.
