‘The Lion King 3D’ has clawed ahead of Brad Pitt’s ‘Moneyball’ for first place at the box office this weekend with a take of $22.1 million.

‘Moneyball,’ a true-life baseball story which also stars Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman, slid into second with $20.6 million.

Coming in a close third is the kiddie flick, ‘Dolphin Tale,’ which earned $20.3 million at the box office.

The animated classic, back in theaters for a limited two-week 3D run, has surprised Hollywood by placing first at the weekend box office.

The re-released film earned $29.3 million.

Like the disease it documents, ‘Contagion’ caught on with audiences this weekend.

The killer virus thriller, featuring Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow among other big names, has won the weekend box office with $23.1 million in ticket sales, knocking sleeper hit ‘The Help’ to #2 with a $8.7 million take.

“The Help” has easily won the Labor Day weekend box office.

The book club favorite turned sleeper hit took the #1 spot with a $19 million haul over the four-day holiday.

Emma Stone’s movie beat three action-packed new releases – “The Debt” ($12.6 million), “Apollo 18″ ($10.7 million), and “Shark Night 3D” ($10.3 million).

“The Help” Wins Weakened Box Office Due to Hurricane Irene

Hurricane Irene has taken its toll on Atlantic Seaboard and this weekend’s box office, resulting in possibly the worst weekend of 2011 at the movies.

Still, “The Help” led the pack with $14.3 million in ticket sales.

Zoe Saldana’s revenge-action flick “Colombiana” came in second with $10.3 million.

Nabbing third with $8.7 million was the Katie Holmes horror movie “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.”

‘The Help’ earned a $20.5 million victory, with James Franco’s ‘Apes’ hitting $16.3 million for a strong second place.

Meanwhile, the Emma Stone-headlined film, ‘The Help’ took second place with $25.7 million, followed in third by ‘Final Destination 5′ with $18.4 million.
