The Avengers was the top movie at the overall worldwide box office for 2012, racking up a staggering $1.51 billion in global earnings.

Another comic book-based film, The Dark Knight Rises, also crossed the billion-dollar mark, finishing with $1.08 billion and second place.

Top 10 Most Pirated Movies of 2012

Project X, about an out-of-control teen party, was the most pirated movie of 2012, according to TorrentFreak.

The site has released its list of the films downloaded most often on file-sharing service BitTorrent over the past year, and Project X finished a surprising #1 with approximately 8.72 million illegal downloads.

The Expendables 2 Wins Weekend Box Office; Anti-Obama Doc Lands in Top 10



The Expendables 2 has won a weak, tightly packed box office this weekend.

Sylvester Stallone’s band of mostly aging action heroes took the top spot with $13.5 million.

That was good enough to beat second place finisher The Bourne Legacy, which earned $9.2 million.

ParaNorman came in third with $8.5 million.

The Bourne Legacy Beats The Campaign and Dark Knight Rises for #1



The Bourne Legacy topped the weekend box office, breaking The Dark Knight Rises’ streak.

Bourne, with Jeremy Renner replacing Matt Damon as the franchise’s star, took in $41 million in its first weekend, beating the Will Ferrell-Zach Galifianakis political comedy The Campaign, which place second with $26.7 million.

The final Christian Bale Batman flick, the Dark Knight Rises, came in third with $20.2 million.

Anne Hathaway is getting rave reviews for her performance in The Dark Knight Rises — including an endorsement by none other than President Obama.

At a star-studded fundraiser at Harvey Weinsteins Connecticut home on Monday, Obama praised Hathaway’s turn as Catwoman to guests Aaron Sorkin and Jerry Springer.

Christian Bale’s final Batman turn earned $36.4 million, and held off the newly opened Total Recall remake, which came in second with $26 million.

Securing third was Diary of a Wimpy Kid 3, with $14.7 million in ticket sales.

Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale’s Batman trilogy finale earned $64.1 million, giving it an easy victory over the animated flick Ice Age 4, which came in second with $13.3 million.

The Ben Stiller-led ensemble alien invasion comedy The Watch debuted at third with $13 million.
