Ben Affleck’s bank robber drama, ‘The Town,’ has opened in the top spot at the box office, beating three other new releases.

The gritty crime film earned $23.8 million for the weekend, higher than most analysts predicted.

Teen comedy ‘Easy A’ finished in second place, with $18.2 million, while horror-in-the-elevator flick, ‘Devil,’ rounded the top three with $12.6 million.

‘Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D’ took the top spot this weekend at the box office, with $27.7 million in ticket sales. The fourth film in the post-apocalyptic Milla Jovovich franchise easily beat the debuts of the first three installments. ‘Takers’ and ‘The American,’ two of the movies that battled for #1 last week, were neck-and-neck for second and third place with $6.1 million and $5.9 million, respectively. George Clooney’s low-key assassin thriller, ‘The American,’ tops the box office this Labor Day Weekend with $16.1 million in ticket sales. The exploitation-style, violence-soaked ‘Machete’ has narrowly taken second place with $14.7 million in its debut. And rounding out the top three is ‘Takers,’ with $14.5 million.
