The movie, opening in June, explores what various people do in the three weeks before an asteroid is set to strike Earth and kill everyone.

It’s a comedy – really!

Steve Carell is set to play John du Pont, the mentally ill heir to a chemical fortune who killed his friend, an Olympic wrestler.

The movie, Foxcatcher, is being developed by Capote director Bennett Miller.

While comedian Carell has done drama before, the role would be his biggest departure from type yet.

Believed to have been a paranoid schizophrenic, du Pont built a wrestling training facility on his estate in Pennsylvania, where he ultimately shot and killed gold medalist David Schultz in 1996.

He was taken into custody after a two-day standoff with police.

Authorities never established a motive for the shocking crime, witnessed by Schultz’s wife.

Du Pont was convicted of third-degree murder and died in prison last year at 72.

“Saturday Night Love” brought back its “Ambiguously Gay Duo” cartoon, featuring its two crimefighters Ace and Gary, but last night’s show had an added twist.

After a “Flesh Ray” weapon zapped the two animated superheroes during a showdown with villains, Ace and Gary transformed into live-action figures, played by Jon Hamm and Jimmy Fallon.

The villains were also turned into real-life individuals with SNL host Ed Helms as a split-faced foe, Stephen Colbert as Dr. Brainio, and Steve Carell as Bighead.

The 2011 MTV Movie Awards ceremony is shaping up to be one of the most star-studded events of the summer.

Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari and Danny McBride have been added to the A-list lineup of presenters on the June 5 broadcast.

As Gossip Cop previously reported, Cameron Diaz, Selena Gomez,Emma Stone, Shia LaBeouf, Patrick Dempsey, Nicki Minaj, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Leighton Meester, Josh Duhamel and Katie Cassidy will also be handing out the golden popcorn statuettes.

“Saturday Night Live” star Jason Sudeikis is hosting the event.

Steve Carell is attached to star in Dogs of Babel, a drama about a man who loses his wife and looks for answers.

The movie will be adapted from the book of the same name by Carolyn Parkhurst.

In the story, a linguistics professor returns home one day to find his wife dead in their backyard, with the couple’s dog as the only witness. The grieving husband attempts to teach the dog to talk to uncover what really happened.

Carell has begun to film his final episodes as Michael Scott on “The Office.”

The Office has a new staffer.

Cody Horn will fill one of the new roles created after Steve Carell‘s iconic Michael Scott character leaves the hit series later this season.

“We’re very excited to have found Cody,” says executive producer Paul Lieberstein, who also plays Toby Flenderson on the show.

“We’ve been searching for a love interest for Creed for a long time,” Lieberstein jokes to TVLine. “So just sit back and get ready to be disgusted.”

Model-turned-actress Horn has appeared on “Rescue Me,” and in movies like Flipped.

As Gossip Cop reported last month, Will Ferrell will do a four-episode arc to help smooth Carell’s exit from the show.

Will Ferrell will do a four-episode arc on “The Office” to help smooth Steve Carell‘s exit from the series, Gossip Cop confirms.

He will play a manager who comes to the Scranton branch and turns out to be just as inappropriate as Carell’s character.

Ferrell will do at least one episode after Carell leaves the show.

Ricky Gervais will make a cameo appearance on “The Office” in the episode airing on January 27.

Details about the Golden Globes host’s spot are not known, but the cameo has been shot already, with Gervais reprising his character David Brent.

Gervais created the original British “The Office,” where Brent filled the boss role Steve Carell plays in the American version.

Tina Fey will be honored tonight as the youngest ever recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center in Washington.

The first female head writer on “Saturday Night Live” and the force behind celebrated sitcom “30 Rock,” Fey will be feted by notables including Steve Martin, Steve Carell, Jon Hamm and Jennifer Hudson.

Fey is the third woman to get the Twain honor, after Lily Tomlin and Whoopi Goldberg.

Other past honorees include Richard Pryor, Bob Newhart, Bill Cosby, and Fey’s “SNL” boss Lorne Michaels.

An actor from The 40-Year-Old Virgin has been convicted of attempted murder after stabbing his ex-girlfriend more than 20 times.

Jurors in San Diego County also found Shelley Malil guilty of assault with a deadly weapon, although he was acquitted on a lesser residential burglary charge.

He now faces 21 years to life in prison.

Malil and Kendra Beebe, a mother of two, had a violent confrontation at her home in 2008 that left Beebe near death from stab wounds to her face, neck and torso.

While Malil’s defense team argued that he never intended to kill his ex, Deputy District Attorney Keith Watanabe convinced the jury that his actions were premeditated.

The jury returned with a verdict on Thursday after beginning deliberations on Wednesday.

Malil played Haziz, one of Steve Carell‘s co-workers, in The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Jon Stewart will once again host Comedy Central’s celeb-studded “Night Of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Concert For Autism Education.”

Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey, Larry David, Stephen Colbert are among the huge roster of stars expected to participate in the event, the network announced on Thursday.

The two-hour event airs on October 21.

“Night Of Too Many Stars” will be built around a comedy concert in New York featuring Steve Carell, Jimmy Fallon, Tracy Morgan, Chris Rock, Joel McHale and many others.

The evening features live performances, sketches and short films.

A Los Angeles phone bank for donations, meanwhile, will be manned by celebrities including Jimmy Kimmel, Jim Parsons, Sofia Vergara and Bryan Cranston.

Inception‘s reign atop the box office is over, thanks to The Other Guys.

The Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg buddy cop comedy laughed its way to the bank, and the top of the box office with a resounding $35.6 million during its opening weekend.

Inception came in a strong second place with $18.6 million in its fourth week.

The dance flick, Step Up 3D, debuted at #3 with $15.5 million.

And the Angelina Jolie thriller Salt took in $11.1 million, beating both Steve Carell movies – Dinner for Schmucks and Despicable Me — which made $10.5 and $9.4 million, respectively.

Reports everywhere yesterday announced Sandra Bullock and Steve Carell are co-starring in a new flick called The Abstinence Teacher.

According to the rumor, the comedy would feature Bullock “as a liberal sex education teacher who clashes with her conservative middle America town, and ends up falling for her daughter’s born-again Christian soccer coach, played by Carrell!”

An Oscar winner and a Golden Globe winner teaming up?

Sounds like it could have potential.

But not so fast.

While a rep for Carrell calls the reports “premature,” Bullock’s rep goes even further, saying “there is no truth” to the movie claim.

Maybe the sites should’ve waited until the time was right.

It’s a threepeat for Inception, the Leonardo DiCaprio mind-bender, which won the box office for the third week in a row, having edged out Steve Carell‘s new release Dinner For Schmucks.

According to estimates, Inception took in a weekend box office total of $27.5 million while Schmucks made $23.3 million.

Audiences are still digging Angelina Jolie as a spy, with Salt finishing in third with approximately $19.2 million.

Zac Efron‘s sentimental Charlie St. Cloud opened to $12.1 million in sixth place behind other new release, Cats & Dogs 3D: Kitty Galore (fifth), and another Steve Carell flick, Despicable Me (fourth).

After a tight battle that was too close to call until today, Sam Worthington and CGI monsters fended off Tina Fey and Steve Carell.

Clash of the Titans ($26.6 million) won the box office for the second straight weekend, edging new release Date Night ($25.2 million) after final numbers showed the comedy pulled in roughly $2 million less than reported on Sunday.

Most outlets reported late Sunday and early Monday that Date Night had won a narrow victory based on projections.

How to Train Your Dragon finished a close third with $24.8 million.

Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too? ($11 million) and The Last Song ($9.8 million) rounded out the top five.

The race for #1 is still too close to call, with Date Night and Clash of the Titans within a few hundred thousand dollars of each other and rival studios making separate predictions ahead of Sunday’s final numbers.

Meanwhile, The Runaways continued to boost its performance in limited release. The rock biopic earned an estimated $470,000 for the weekend from 204 locations, for a $2,304-per-screen average.

Projections place Steve Carell and Tina Fey in first place at the box office… but just barely.

The duo’s comic romp Date Night is expected to land at #1 for the weekend after an estimated $9.3 million Friday debut. Its projected three-day haul of $25 million beats holdovers Clash of the Titans (est. $24 million) and How to Train Your Dragon (est. $24 million) by a nose.

Titans won last weekend, with Dragon triumphant two weeks ago.

These are still only projections, of course, and Gossip Cop will have updated numbers later.

Producers behind the 82nd Academy Awards just announced eight new male presenters to an already star-packed lineup at Sunday’s broadcast.

Bradley Cooper, Tom Ford, Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Pine, Keanu Reeves, Sam Worthington, Ryan Reynolds, and Gerard Butler will present Oscars, according to producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman.

The group joins previously announced presenters including Jason Bateman, Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Ben Stiller, Miley Cyrus, Zac Efron, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Barbra Streisand, Kathy Bates, John Travolta, and Queen Latifah.

We’d say that lineup isn’t too shabby.

Gossip Cop didn’t forget about Kristen Stewart. Many of you asked whether she would be attending tonight’s People’s Choice Awards, the first big Hollywood event of the year.

While a rep for Stewart did not get back to us, sources at Summit Entertainment say only “New Moon” stars Taylor Lautner and Kellan Lutz are slated to attend, and a rep for the awards show told Gossip Cop that Stewart was not on the list of attendees.

Stewart was nominated in the “Favorite Movie Actress” category.

“New Moon” is up for “Favorite Movie” and “Favorite On-Screen Team.”

As reported yesterday, Robert Pattinson will NOT be at the People’s Choice Awards since he has prior work commitments.

And while Lautner’s ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift will be at the presentation, don’t expect any drama.

Still, there’s plenty of reason to watch the show, being hosted by Queen Latifah, especially if you’re a fan of Sandra Bullock, Steve Carell, Carrie Underwood, Ashton Kutcher, Mariah Carey, Ryan Reynolds, Jessica Alba, LL Cool J, George Lopez, Keith Urban, Sacha Baron Cohen or Hugh Jackman, among others. 

The People’s Choice Awards are being broadcast live on CBS from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

The People’s Choice Awards just got more interesting.

Taylor Swift is expected to run into her most recent ex-boyfriend Taylor Lautner, now that singing star has just been added as one of the celebrities expected at tomorrow’s awards show, which hands out trophies to film, television and music stars, all based on fan voting.

More than 60 million fans voted for the 30 different categories including, Favorite Movie Actor, Favorite TV Comedy, Favorite Female Artist, Favorite On-Screen Team, and even Favorite Animal Show.

Among the top nominated movies and TV shows, respectively, are the vampire-based “New Moon” and “True Blood.”

In addition to the two Taylors, also expected at the Queen Latifah-hosted show, being aired on CBS from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, are Sandra Bullock, Steve Carell, Carrie Underwood, Ashton Kutcher, Mariah Carey, Ryan Reynolds, Jessica Alba, LL Cool J, George Lopez, Kellan Lutz, Keith Urban, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Hugh Jackman.

“American Idol” judge, Simon Cowell, who also created “America’s Got Talent” and produces records, earned more than any other guy on TV. According to Forbes, from June 1, 2008 to June 1, 2009, Cowell raked in $75 million.

Next was Donald Trump, who earned $50 million from “The Apprentice,” book sales, and all the products – ranging from neckties to vodka – that he endorses.

In the number three spot is Ryan Seacrest. With his hosting radio and TV shows, among other endeavors, Seacrest amassed $38 million.

“Two and a Half Men” star Charlie Sheen made the combined salary of thousands of men with $21 million. And the fifth highest-earning guy on primetime was “The Office” star Steve Carell, who took in $20 million.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Howie Mandel ($15 million), Kiefer Sutherland ($13 million), Jeff Foxworthy ($11 million), Hugh Laurie ($10 million), and David Caruso ($9 million).
