Spidey is going the Avatar route.

Sony plans to release its new Spider-Man movie on July 3, 2012 – in 3D.

As reported earlier, Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi, the star and director of the last three movies in the series, have been jettisoned. The studio plans to “reboot” the series with the next installment.

According to a piece in the UK newspaper, The Sun, which was picked up around the world, Maguire “will play the lead role of Bilbo Baggins in the blockbuster movie version of JRR Tolkein’s classic book,” and “signed up after quitting the Spider-Man franchise.”
