It was “love at first sight” for Kristen Stewart when she met Robert Pattinson, says Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke.

In a new interview with Newsweek, Hardwicke recounts when the actors met for the very first time at her home in Malibu, observing that Stewart “felt connected to [Pattinson] from the first moment. That electricity, or love at first sight, or whatever it is.”

After they kissed for the first time during the audition, Stewart, who had already won the role of Bella, urged the director, “It’s got to be Rob!”

Hardwicke was in full agreement – but made Pattinson agree to one condition first.

“You’ve got to realize that Kristen is 17 years old,” she told Pattinson, who was then 20. “She’s underage. You’ve got to focus, dude, or you’re going to be arrested. I made him swear on a stack of Bibles.”

The co-stars are currently filming Breaking Dawn in Vancouver.

As the Eclipse release nears, rumors concerning appearances by cast members are on the rise.

Late yesterday, Western outlets began picking up a Russian radio station’s report that Robert Pattinson, director David Slade and author Stephenie Meyer were due to launch the film in Moscow on June 30.

The rumor speculates about where the “delegation from Hollywood” will stay, mentions that a “select audience” has been invited to the premiere, and claims Pattinson “wants to walk through Red Square to visit the Kremlin.”

But Muscovites should NOT be duped.

A rep for Summit Entertainment tells Gossip Cop the supposed rendezvous in Russia is NOT TRUE.

“Rob & Kristen Confirm They’re Dating — to Oprah!” screams a headline that sent Twilight fans into a frenzy this afternoon.

According to an E! Online story, when the cameras weren’t rolling on Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Dakota Fanning – for an episode to air May 13 –  Oprah Winfrey asked Pattinson and Stewart backstage if they were really a couple.

The report claims they “confirmed to Oprah backstage they are in fact dating.”

Oprah supposedly informed Pattinson and Stewart that she had to “go there” and ask on-camera if they were or weren’t together, knowing they wouldn’t address it seriously in public. But privately, “she wanted to know what was really happening.”

Says a so-called “spy”: “Obviously Oprah had to ask something during the taping, but agreed beforehand she wouldn’t be too hard on [Rob and Kristen] if they told her what was really going on. Both Rob and Kristen’s people and Summit then confirmed ahead of time [Rob and Kristen] are together and are dating. One hundred percent.”

Whether Pattinson and Stewart are dating is really up to them to discuss. Just this week in Elle magazine, Stewart said, “I would never cheapen my relationships by talking about them.”

Robsten may be together, but one thing Gossip Cop knows for a fact – after spending a good part of the day working on this – is that NO reps ever confirmed it to Oprah.

That scenario never happened, and when asked whether Oprah got the scoop off-camera because she simply had to know, a rep for the talk show queen tells Gossip Cop “it’s not true.”

Is Robert Pattinson going from fanging to head banging?

The Sun raised eyebrows EVERYWHERE this morning with a report that Pattinson “has landed his dream film role — playing Kurt Cobain in a Hollywood biopic.” Noting that Pattinson “has always thought of himself as a musician rather than an actor,” the paper says “securing a part” as the late Cobain “is ideal for the pin-up.”

A hero of the grunge rock scene with Nirvana, Cobain killed himself in 1994.

According to the Sun story, Pattinson was so determined to play the part, he vigorously lobbied Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, who supposedly wants Scarlett Johansson to portray her in the project.

The paper’s “source” claims Pattinson “has been calling and emailing [Love] non-stop,” and that he is “her number one choice to play Kurt.”

So did the Sun score a big casting scoop?

Not to be “curt,” but no.

The rumor is just plain wrong. A source close to Pattinson tells Gossip Cop there is “no accuracy” to today’s report.

Nevermind.

By know, most fans have seen the interview with Robert Pattinson and photo spread he did for Details magazine to help mark its tenth anniversary. The issue will be on newsstands on February 23, but last night and this morning the images made their way online.

However, one of the eye-popping photographs — showing two people kissing with their heads wrapped in scarves — deserves a closer look.

The man is NOT Robert Pattinson.

While the implication is that it’s Pattinson, who is, after all, seen lounging with undressed women throughout the photo shoot, the gentleman in that photo (on page 164 of the print edition) is a male model.

In fact, a source close to the actor tells Gossip Cop Pattinson “wasn’t even there” for the photos where he doesn’t appear.

Fortunately for fans, however, there’s quite a bit of Pattinson himself in the rest of the gallery.

Gossip Cop can confirm that Robert Pattinson will appear on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” on March 1 – the same day that Fallon celebrates his first year anniversary as host of “Late Night.”

Following his appearance, Pattinson will then head to the premiere of Remember Me, his film with Emilie de Ravin.

Fallon, of course, has had some fun at Pattinson’s expense in the past, showing videos of a “bothered” “Pattinson” (played by Fallon), airing grievances from a tree. (VIDEO BELOW)

An interview with Nicola Peltz on People.com generated a lot of interest today when it was revealed the actress, who stars in M. Night Shyamalan‘s The Last Airbender, not only worked with Twilight-er Jackson Rathbone on the film, but will also be co-starring with Robert Pattinson in the near future.

A quick look at IMDB left fans guessing, since it doesn’t list any of Pattinson’s known upcoming projects among the 15-year-old actress’ plans.

Well, Gossip Cop solved the mystery.

A source close to Peltz tells Gossip Cop she’s been cast in Unbound Captives.

We hear great things about the young actress, which should only make anticipation even higher for the Pattinson flick.

Like a bad meal coming back to haunt you, so too is this bad dish about a Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart “love nest.”

Yesterday, the Daily Mail reported, “Twilight star Robert Pattinson wants to buy a house on the Isle of Wight, where he plans to live” with Kristen Stewart. The article went on to claim that “after a romantic New Year on the island they intend to buy a home there.”

Really?!

The paper even quoted an unnamed source saying, “He just wants a quiet English life, which is why he brought Kristen over for New Year.”

And while the Isle of Wight — off the coast of England — would afford Pattinson a more private life, this rumor, which surfaced a few days ago, is still not true.

Sources (re)assure Gossip Cop Pattinson and Stewart are not — repeat, not — moving to the isle.

Recently, George Clooney and Robert Pattinson have been linked (through mutual co-star Anna Kendrick) in a joking back-and-forth about their good looks.

Today, though, it’s good deeds that might bring the two together, and it’s no laughing matter.

There’s a lot of talk about whether Pattinson will participate in Clooney’s telethon to raise relief funds for earthquake-devastated Haiti next Friday, January 22.

As of now it looks like Pattinson has not formally joined the event, although it remains a distinct possibility.

A source close to Pattinson tells Gossip Cop the “Twilight” star has not received a call, but “I’m sure Robert would participate if asked.”

Here we go again.

Dozens of outlets are breathlessly repeating rumors that Robert Pattinson is the leading candidate to replace Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man.

You’ll recall that the story started as an April Fool’s prank later dusted off and published (without context) by the Oh No They Didn’t community. Gossip Cop busted the site and the speculation.

Just a few days ago, though, Sony announced that it would reboot the Spider-Man franchise, letting Maguire and director Sam Raimi go. And once it became clear that there will (eventually) be a new actor in the lead role, blogs anointed Pattinson. Buzz bubbled all the way up to the granddaddy of all cut-and-pasters, Perez Hilton, who trumpets rumors without checking them out.

Gossip Cop needs to step in.

Yes, there will now be a new Spider-Man, but Robert Pattinson is NOT set to take the part.

Pattinson is committed to a busy upcoming slate that includes Bel Ami, Unbound Captives, and a potential Breaking Dawn production. He’s been wrongly linked to projects ranging from X-Men to Yellow Submarine. The Spidey rumor is no more real.

We’ve spoken with sources close to the studio, which now needs to devise a new identity for the franchise, a new timetable, and a new script. Casting is not yet on the radar.

Any outlet stirring Pattinson into the mix does so with zero factual basis.

When it comes to the stars of “Twilight,” the usually unrelenting gossip mill has been quiet. There have been fewer outrageous claims, fewer contrived stories…

But now this…

“Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart might be relocating!”

Uh oh. Here we go.

Because they were “hardly bothered” while ringing in the New Year in Ventnor, on the Isle of Wight, Pattinson and Stewart “are thinking about buying a house in the secluded area,” according to rumors.

According to an “insider,” Pattinson and Stewart were so happy to be (mostly) left alone during their Ventnor visit, “They’ve talked about buying a property on [the] island for when the pressures of Hollywood get too much.”

Gossip Cop will stop this Wight there.

We know it’s great fun for sites to mix and match phrases Mad Libs-style with Pattinson and Stewart, so “moving together” and “Isle of Wight” were bound to come up. But the stars are not planning to become Ventnor residents.

Even though we’d understand their desire to escape the media who hound them (and still get most things wrong), sources tell us Pattinson and Stewart are not moving to the isle.

Some outlets are still angling for Gossip Cop end-of-the-year dishonors. Maybe they should just resolve to sit out for a while.

Your (ahem) “trusted” source for Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart news, Entertainment & Showbiz, has decided this morning to clear up their relationship status once and for all.

According to the site, Pattinson and Stewart “are no longer dating each other.”

Huh?

That’s right. “Even if you come across photos of them together and hear the news of Kristen visiting Robert,” the site warns, do not be “misled.” The two actors “are just friends.” How does E&S know? Well, when Stewart dated Michael Angarano, she “never hid her affair,” but the actress “has not opened up about her relationship with Robert Pattinson.”

Let’s follow the “logic” here. Stewart once had a boyfriend and spoke openly about him, so her reluctance to address her relationship with Pattinson (after two years of life-altering fame and predatory media frenzy) means there isn’t one?

Here are the facts. The “Twilight” stars welcomed the New Year together on the Isle of Wight off the southern coast of England. They posed for photos with a fan outside a grocery store in the island’s seaside town of Ventnor.

And here’s Gossip Cop‘s take. A site that asks you to ignore what evidence does exist while supporting its own theories with baffling logic… is probably more wrong than Wight.

Take British OK!, for instance, which saw fit to “report” that Robert Pattinson tried out for “Twilight” “because of Kristen Stewart.”

In the item, Pattinson expresses admiration for Stewart’s acting. ”The only reason I went to the audition,” the magazine’s site quotes Pattinson as saying about the vampire series, “was to see Kristen because I’d just seen Into The Wild.”

Hmm. Those comments sound really familiar.

Maybe because they come from press Pattinson did for the first “Twilight” movie… two years ago.

And because they were already recycled (over and over) last summer.

What’s especially frustrating about outlets rehashing the “audition” comments now — with many of them claiming Pattinson’s revelation constitutes “breaking news” — is that they do so in direct connection to current reports that the pair “spent New Year’s together in the UK.”

But, since they have little new, useful information to provide, they build Pattinson-and-Stewart headlines around old quotes.

Gossip Cop can’t wait for 2011, when the press junkets for “New Moon” will be considered cutting edge!

We thought we might escape 2009 without any more ridiculous Robert Pattinson romance rumors.

We worried we wouldn’t have another chance to laugh and laugh and laugh…

And then we saw this.

Yes, hard partying singer Amy Winehouse has “developed a crush” on Pattinson and “finds him and the idea of vampires incredibly sexy.” So sexy, in fact, she’s “threatening to have a vampire-themed blowout” at her home on New Year’s Eve.

News of Winehouse’s crush comes from Janet Charlton’s Hollywood, which infamously alleged Spencer Pratt‘s sister suspected him of setting up her DUI arrest and announced (wrongly) that Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor had split.

But, hey, why should that track record of failure influence our response to Charlton’s statement, “Are we imagining things or does Rob look a little like Amy’s ex-husband Blake [Fielder]? Picture Rob in a wife-beater.”

So, Gossip Cop fans: Robert Pattinson and Amy Winehouse. Couple to watch in 2010?

A couple of weeks ago we joked about a story that paired Robert Pattinson with “X Factor” star Lucie Jones. The rumors originated in a report claiming Pattinson’s sister had arranged a “romantic rendezvous” between 18-year-old Jones and Pattinson, her “huge fan.”

Of course, once you read the story, it sounded more like a friendly case of mutual admiration, with Jones saying that plans to meet never materialized, but that she and Pattinson were “going to go to dinner or something” in the future. “I really, really fancy him… Kristen Stewart had better watch out!” Jones joked.

At the time, we couldn’t believe outlets reported those quotes with a straight face and used them to claim “romance” between Pattinson and Jones.

Now comes a whole new batch of rumors based on the SAME story.

Sigh. Never underestimate the media’s capacity for “wrong.”

“Is Robert Pattinson dating X Factor’s Lucie Jones?!” demands Marie Claire, one of many sites so desperate for Christmas week “news” they’re trying to re-inflate these Rob romance rumors Gossip Cop punctured a full sixteen days ago.

Surely there must be new information, right?

Uh, no.

Same exact quotes, same exact details, same exact nonsense.

“You can image (sic) our surprise when we found out that X Factor’s Lucie Jones has been asked on a date by none other than Twilight’s Robert Pattinson,” the piece begins.

Actually, their “surprise” at this weeks-old, long since discarded “news” is kind of hard for Gossip Cop to imagine.

Star magazine has flowered into the Perez Hilton of the newsstand — its material is frequently late, lifted, and wrong.

Last week, blogs buzzed with rumors of “Twilight” heartthrob Robert Pattinson getting “flirty” with friend Katy Perry. At the time, Gossip Cop busted the talk as empty embellishment, and it was. Perry, who dates Russell Brand, even Tweeted her disbelief at the Rob rumors, writing, “Read a bunch of yesterdays-news- BULLOCKS. Ppl should know by now that I don’t do vampires,” and reaffirming her relationship with Brand, with whom she’s currently in London.

Cue Star, which today prints an item blaring, “Katy & Rob’s Big Night Out!”

“When Russell Brand and Kristen Stewart are away,” the mag squeals, “Katy Perry and Robert Pattinson will play!”

“Both of them forgot all about their partners when they hit Dimples karaoke bar,” Star says, quoting a so-called “eyewitness” account of Pattinson and Perry looking “supercozy together.” What else can this (visually impaired) “eyewitness” report? “Katy was practically sitting on his lap,” the “source” spills, adding “They were definitely intrigued by each other.”

Know what “intrigues” Gossip Cop?

How a magazine can feel good printing a story that we debunked five days ago, that video showed to be a gross exaggeration, that one of the subjects directly mocked, and that seems to be undermined by its own final sentence, which notes that the next day Perry “was spotted kissing Russell on Sunset Blvd. in L.A.”

Kudos to Star for once again bending our minds!

Mixing and matching big celebrity names in claims of romantic encounters has never been sillier than on RadarOnline.com this morning.

The story making waves has Robert Pattinson and Katy Perry getting “up close and personal” last night at a mutual friend’s birthday party at Dimples Supper Club in Burbank, California. “The two superstars looked to be more than just good friends,” the site whispers in a “world exclusive” barely worth the digital code it’s printed on.

So what happened? Well, Pattinson and Perry went to Dimples with a large group of friends, there was some karaoke, at some point they were seen face to face and giggling, and eventually they left, with another friend, in Perry’s car.

That’s it.

Oh, and there’s video! Video of Pattinson smoking and chatting with a bunch of people, then walking to the parking lot with Perry and several other friends. When they get to the vehicle, he climbs into the back seat while someone else sits next to Perry.

Yet Radar has the audacity to title this video: “Rob Pattinson and Katy Perry’s Flirty Fun!”

Flirty fun? Um, kinda looks more like a car pool.

Radar also fails to mention that Perry is dating Russell Brand. Sort of an important detail.

Gossip Cop expects ridiculous rumors to follow Pattinson wherever he goes, but rarely are they as lazy and lame as this one. Let’s put it this way: If for all of Radar’s “spying” last night they saw nothing that lets them quote Perry’s smash, “I Kissed A Girl,” we doubt anything resembling “flirty fun” took place.

This one was so absurd, we almost thought it was a deliberate joke. But we got a ton of questions and were compelled to investigate.

A story getting traction today concerns the New York Police Department handcuffing “Twilight” megastar Robert Pattinson.

You read that correctly.

“Why on earth… would the hunky Rob… invite the wrath of the cops?” asks the site that started the rumor, which was then picked up elsewhere.

How about a fictional (and incomprehensible) tale of identity theft?

Pattinson “got entangled in the mazy web of law,” states the article, when a guy with “similar kind of hair” impersonated the actor, who, according to the story, had “lost” his billfold earlier. Pattinson then received a call from the police “to come down to a small food mart.” Since he had “just got out of the shower,” says the site, Pattinson “didn’t have [his] usual look,” and so the cops arrested him instead of the impersonator.

What? Huh?? This makes NO SENSE!

Hold on – it gets even more absurd.

Kristen Stewart was on the scene and reportedly “confronted the cops,” “intervening in the nick of time.”

[confused silence]

Um, what?

[stares]

Seriously: What. Is. Going. On. Here?

Let’s get this straight. A gigantic movie star loses his wallet, reports it, the police tell him to come down to an unidentified store, they mistake him for a crook because he was freshly showered, and then an equally famous co-star conveniently comes by to clear things up?

Because we’re gluttons for punishment, Gossip Cop contacted the New York City Police Department, just to make sure there was zero truth to the silliest thing we’ve read in weeks. Probably months. Not surprisingly, they had never heard of any incident with Pattinson.

In just the past few months alone, Robert Pattinson has been thrown into the casts of “Dune,” Vauxhall Crossed,” and “Yellow Submarine,” without a single audition – or interest.

The latest rumor claims “Pattinson wants to play X-Men Villain” Magneto.

According to the British OK!, Pattinson “now wants to jump from vampires to characters with superpowers” and “revealed his desire to play the mutant [Magneto] who is able to control and generate magnetic fields and is an arch-enemy of the X-Men.”

What you should know, however, is that Pattinson didn’t say he had interest in playing Magneto. He was simply responding to a leading question from an interviewer about whether he had “thought about playing a superhero sometime in the future?”

The tab reports that Pattinson said, “Well, yeah, I think everyone wonders about that sometimes. My little cousin tells me I look like Magneto, so I guess that’s who I should probably play.”

But since his kid cousin isn’t a casting director and Pattinson hasn’t really expressed an interest in playing Magneto — nor can a single person we’ve reach out to confirm it — Gossip Cop is going to put a big X across this story and add it to the “Pattinson False Rumor Role” file.

This is getting ridiculous.

According to British OK!, Robert Pattinson “still insists he is single, despite persistent rumors he is dating Kristen Stewart.” The story quotes the “Twilight” hunk as saying, “Almost everything that come outs [sic] about my private life is false” and “While I am filming, I live practically like a recluse in a hotel.”

Sound… familiar?

(Sigh.)

At no point does the piece – posted today – acknowledge that the quotes come from the (already) much discussed Pattinson cover story in Italian Vanity Fair.

Earlier this week Gossip Cop revealed where these Vanity Fair comments originated – from a series of separate interviews, some of which were conducted months ago.

We learned this because we took the time to check facts – something OK!, Perez Hilton, and countless other major outlets failed to do in their haste to announce the would-be Pattinson bombshell.

Instead, they reprint his quotes, often without attribution or context, perpetuating the notion that his “I am single” line is newsy.

It’s old news. In fact, as Gossip Cop reported, Pattinson said those specific words at Cannes… last May.

This is precisely why we do what we do. Many outlets led with “Robert Pattinson still insists he is single,” and then used quotes that are seven months old. A lot has changed in that time, and their readers deserve to know the truth.

For the second time in as many days, comments attributed to Robert Pattinson have created a tidal wave of (new) speculation among fans concerning his relationship status.

We found our inbox flooded today with links to an “interview” the “Twilight” heartthrob ”gave” on a site called SantaBanta.com in which he supposedly says, “I am pretty ‘straight’” but “I don’t have a girlfriend.” The piece received ENORMOUS pick up on other gossip sites – not surprising given what appeared to be Pattinson’s atypically blunt response to questions about his long-rumored relationship with Kristen Stewart.

The piece didn’t look or sound right to Gossip Cop, and our strong doubts about its legitimacy were well founded. A source close to Pattinson tells Gossip Cop the so-called interview is “manufactured.”

There has been enormous speculation over the past two days about which films Robert Pattinson will do and which he will not.

In a series of threads on IMDB, for example, fans wondered whether it was true that Pattinson had been recast or dropped out of the film “Bel Ami,” in which he plays an immoral man named George Duroy, based on the short story by Guy de Maupassant. While many thought that he was recast/bowed out because of scheduling issues, Gossip Cop can confirm that Pattinson is still slated to make that movie.

But what about Pattinson re-making “Dune,” a rumor which set Twitter atwitter? While it’s true that Peter Berg remains intent on doing a re-make of the 1984 film that starred Kyle MacLachlan, Robert Pattinson will NOT be in the film, a source close to the actor tells Gossip Cop.

So it’s one in and one out for Pattinson.

We just got morning sickness reading this story about Kristen Stewart. According to NW Magazine in Australia, the same country that gave us Vegemite and “Crocodile Dundee,” “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart is pregnant with co-star Robert Pattinson’s baby. (You read that right.)

NW Magazine, which has the “exclusive” (now and for perpetuity), adds that Stewart was “so worried someone would discover her secret she sent a close pal to buy a pregnancy test kit.”

Even more absurd? The tab says, “because of the timing, she thinks Rob could be the father.” Wow, what can be more embarrassing than finding out you’re not the father of a fictitious baby? Uh, writing this nonsense?
