Audiences are still flocking to Middle-Earth.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is #1 at the box office for the second straight week, with $36.7 million in ticket sales.

That was enough to beat two new releases — the Tom Cruise action flick Jack Reacher, which came in second with $15.6 million, and the Judd Apatow-directed comedy This Is 40, which nabbed third with $12 million.

The Hobbit Tops Box Office, Breaks December Records

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey won the weekend box office easily, and also became the biggest December debut in history.

The first installment of Peter Jackson’s new fantasy trilogy earned $84.8 million in its opening weekend, which breaks the $77 million December debuts for I Am Legend and Avatar in previous years.

Rise of the Guardians came in a very distant second with $7.4 million, while Lincoln finished in third with $7.2 million.

Skyfall Wins Box Office; Breaking Dawn Part 2 Remains in Top Three

The James Bond blockbuster Skyfall won a very tight weekend box office, narrowly beating a group of holdovers that keep ruling the top half of the chart.

Skyfall earned $11 million for the top spot, beating the animated Rise of the Guardians, which took in $10.5 million for second place.

Meanwhile, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 remained in the top three with $9.2 million.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 edged out the James Bond movie Skyfall for first place in a tight battle for the box office crown, one week after the pair helped fuel the biggest Thanksgiving in Hollywood history.

Breaking Dawn – Part 2 earned $17.4 million while second place finisher Skyfall took in $17 million.

Coming in third was Lincoln with $13.5 million.

The vampire franchise’s final installment snagged first place (again) with $66 million for the five-day period, bringing its domestic total to $228.9 million.

James Bond thriller Skyfall took second place with $51.2 million.

The presidential drama Lincoln nabbed third with $34.1 million.

Those top earners and others in the weekend’s Top 10 led to this being the biggest Thanksgiving holiday at the box office — ever.
