John Edwards has a life-threatening heart condition, according to his doctor.

A cardiologist for the disgraced ex-Senator and onetime presidential candidate wrote two letters to the judge presiding over Edwards’ trial for alleged conspiracy and campaign law violations.

At a hearing on Friday, Judge Catherine Eagles delayed the trial until at least March 26, giving Edwards time to have surgery.

John Edwards has been indicted by a North Carolina grand jury for misusing political funds to cover up his affair and illegitimate child with Rielle Hunter.

The former senator and 2008 presidential candidate was charged with conspiracy, four counts of illegal campaign contributions and one count of false statements.

Elizabeth Edwards has been laid to rest in North Carolina.
The author, activist and wife of former presidential candidate John Edwards died at 61 on December 7 after a long battle with cancer.

Among those delivering eulogies for Edwards was her daughter, Cate Edwards, who recently announced that she is engaged to longtime boyfriend Trevor Upham.

Hundreds of friends, family and political supporters turned out for the ceremony, including John Kerry, who picked John Edwards as his running mate in the 2004 presidential election.
