Contraband, the new Mark Wahlberg crime movie, is expected to win the box office for the extended Martin Luther King Day Weekend.

With an estimated $30 million haul, Contraband would edge Beauty and the Beast 3D, the Disney re-release, which is tracking toward $26 million for its own opening.

Meanwhile, the Queen Latifah-Dolly Parton release Joyful Noise is battling it out with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol for third place.

Both movies are on pace to hit $14.5 million for the long weekend.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows ($10 million) and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ($9 million) are both expected to finish ahead of last week’s champ, The Devil Inside, which should slip to about $8.5 million.

The Matt Damon family film We Bought a Zoo is targeting a $7 million weekend, just ahead of War Horse ($6.5 million) and The Iron Lady ($6.5 million).

In fact, noted joker Clooney might give the tamest responses, saying, for instance, that “working in the Sudan” in his “greatest achievement.”

Damon and Craig are a bit friskier, at least in the excerpts.

Tom Cruise rang into 2012 with a win at the box office.

The star’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol took the top spot at the box office on New Year’s weekend, raking in $31.3 million, beating second place finisher Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows ($22.1 million).

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked came in third with $18.3 million.

War Horse and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo secured fourth and fifth places with $16.9 million and $16.3 million, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 were the Matt Damon family flick We Bought A Zoo ($14.3 million), The Adventures of Tintin ($12 million), New Year’s Eve ($6.7 million), Moscow alien invasion flick The Darkest Hour ($4.3 million), and The Descendants ($3.7 million).

Jeremy Renner has squashed speculation that he will take over the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Despite positive buzz for his role alongside Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, and acknowledging the potential for a take-over last year, Renner now says, “It’s not happening.”

“No, it’s not true about Mission: Impossible,” Renner tells Reuters. “There’s no taking over.”

The actor said it’s just one of many rumors he’s heard lately, like “that I’m sleeping with half of Hollywood — and I’m like, ‘who has the time?’”

It was a good Christmas weekend for Tom Cruise.

His Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol won the three-day holiday weekend’s top spot, taking in $26.5 million.

Securing second place with $17.8 million was Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows, followed by third-place finisher Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked, with $13.3 million in ticket sales.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Adventures Of Tintin came in fourth and fifth places with $13 million and $9.1 million, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 were the new Matt Damon release, We Bought A Zoo ($7.8 million), New Year’s Eve ($3.6 million), Arthur Christmas ($2.7 million), The Muppets ($2.2 million), and Hugo ($1.6 million).

Matt Damon rips President Obama in Elle magazine, blasting his leadership qualities and saying he’d prefer “a one-term president with some balls who actually got stuff done.”

The actor, a longtime supporter of the Democratic Party and onetime Obama advocate, reveals frustration with the administration in his wide-ranging interview.

“I’ve talked to a lot of people who worked for Obama at the grassroots level,” says Damon. “One of them said to me, ‘Never again. I will never be fooled again by a politician.’”

Damon then gets even more direct with his own criticism.

“You know, a one-term president with some balls who actually got stuff done would have been, in the long run of this country, much better,” argues the We Bought a Zoo star.

He adds, “If the Democrats think that they didn’t have a mandate – people are literally without any focus or leadership, just wandering out into the streets to yell right now because they are so pissed off.”

“Imagine if they had a leader,” wonders Damon.

Wow.

Ben Affleck will direct best friend Matt Damon and co-star with him in a movie about legendary gangster Whitey Bulger.

Damon is set to play Bulger, Boston’s most notorious organized crime figure.

Affleck and Damon will also produce the film.

Casey Affleck, who worked with his brother and Damon on their smash breakthrough Good Will Hunting, is expected to act in the project.

Bulger, who partly inspired The Departed (also starring Damon), was arrested last June after evading the FBI for more than 15 years.

Besides their successful co-starring turns in Good Will Hunting, Damon and Affleck appeared together in Dogma.

Bill Clinton’s birthday bash included many Hollywood stars, but the real action was going on behind the scenes, where an elite team of celebrities brainstormed new ideas for the Clinton Global Initiative.

In this spoof for Funny or Die, an exasperated Ben Stiller picks the brains of a group including Sean Penn, Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig, Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen and Jack Black.

The results are pretty hilarious, including appearances near the end by two “Bill Clintons” (only one of whom is real).

The killer virus thriller, featuring Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow among other big names, has won the weekend box office with $23.1 million in ticket sales, knocking sleeper hit The Help to #2 with a $8.7 million take.

Tom Hardy‘s fisticuffs earned $5.6 million and third place for Warrior.

The Debt and Colombiana took fourth and fifth places with $4.9 million and $4 million, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Rise Of the Planet Of The Apes ($3.9 million), Shark Night 3D ($3.5 million), Apollo 18 ($2.9 million), Our Idiot Brother ($2.8 million), and Spy Kids 4D ($2.5 million).

Matt Damon joined his educator mom Nancy Carlsson-Paige and other teachers for the Save Our Schools (SOS) March in Washington, D.C. over the weekend, and the actor got a little irritated with one reporter’s approach.

The interviewer from Reason.tv questions whether the lack of job security in Hollywood is what makes Damon work hard, implying that tenure is at the root of the educational system’s problems with subpar teachers.

“So you think job insecurity is what makes me work hard?” asks Damon. “I want to be an actor. That’s not an incentive… A teacher wants to teach. I mean, why else would you take a shitty salary and really long hours and do that job unless you really love to do it?”

Later, the guy holding the camera asks, “Aren’t 10 percent [of teachers] bad though?”

Damon replies, “Maybe you’re a sh*tty camera man.”

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie “are like prisoners,” Matt Damon told the German TV channel Tele 5 this past weekend.

He added that Jolie and his Ocean’s Eleven co-star “can’t just go someplace. If they go for a walk, it turns into an international incident.”

He said he doesn’t have to deal with the insanity that other actors do because “I married a woman who isn’t an actress, and we live in New York… As long as we don’t show up in typical tourist spots, we can walk the streets without being noticed.”

Damon and his wife Luciana Barroso have been married since 2005, and have four daughters.

According to the National Enquirer, Matt Damon is preventing his The Adjustment Bureau co-star Emily Blunt and her hubby John Krasinski from starting a family.

Confused?

Well, the tabloid claims Damon has “scared Emily off having kids,” despite Krasinski’s wishes.

“Matt adores his wife Luciana and their four daughters,” says a so-called “insider.”

“But he moaned and groaned to Emily about how he never gets any sleep and having kids can kill a couple’s sex life.”

Now Blunt is supposedly using Damon’s complaints to counter Krasinski’s reported desire to have kids.

“John was hoping to start a family this year,” explains the Enquirer source. “Her excuse is, ‘But Matt says it’s so difficult.’”

What’s “difficult” is believing a tabloid’s claim that Blunt’s co-star has more to do with family planning than her husband.

A rep for Blunt tells Gossip Cop the story is “completely ridiculous and unfounded.”

Matt Damon visited Piers Morgan last night, and the conversation turned to politics.

Known for his Democratic Party allegiances, Damon expressed disappointment with President Obama‘s first two years in office.

“I really think he misinterpreted his mandate… I no longer hope for audacity,” said Damon, referring to Obama’s memoir “The Audacity of Hope.”

According to the National Enquirer, while Scarlett Johansson and Matt Damon playfully wrestled over a water bottle during a break from shooting We Bought a Zoo, “an orangutan who’s co-starring with them suddenly went BANANAS!”

The tab goes on to claim that “the grouchy gorilla, who’s apparently taken quite a monkey-shine to Scarlett since filming began, got jealous and angry when Matt started grabbing at her,” and pelted the Oscar winner with “APE DOO-DOO!”

If the supermarket rag had simply spent as much time fact-checking as it did coming up with primate puns, it wouldn’t have printed this – to borrow a phrase – “poop.”

This monkey business never happened.

In addition to not even having an orangutan in the movie, a rep for the film tells Gossip Cop, “No such event occurred on the set of We Bought A Zoo.”

These type of fabricated stories make us go ape s**t!

It looks like Kristen Stewart will not be joining Robert Pattinson at the Golden Globes.

When Gossip Cop asked whether Stewart would be there, an event organizer told us, ”Not that we’ve heard.”

A rep for Stewart did not respond to calls.

Pattinson will be a presenter at the ceremony, along with Matt Damon, Jennifer Lopez, Sandra Bullock, Bruce Willis, Leighton Meester, Jimmy Fallon and a host of other stars.

The ceremony will be broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel on NBC this Sunday, January 16.

Gold Derby is reporting that Taylor Lautner will be among those who are part of the “Golden Globes starry line-up of presenters.”

Gossip Cop looked into it, and asked a rep for the Twilight star, who responded, “As of now, no.”

We also checked with the Golden Globes people, and were told Lautner was not slated yet either.

It seems Gold Derby may have posted last year’s presenters, which is what has caused the confusion.

Right now, the only confirmed/announced presenters are LL Cool J, Jada Pinkett Smith, Bruce Willis, Scarlett Johansson, Garrett Hedlund, Leighton Meester, Robert Pattinson, Jennifer Lopez, and Matt Damon.

As we reported a few days ago, Damon will present Robert De Niro with the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

The ceremony will be broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel on NBC on Sunday, January 16.

NOTE: Things change closer to the date of the awards and, if they do, Gossip Cop will post who’s presenting as soon as we find out.

True Grit and Little Fockers were in a tight race for the top spot this New Year’s Weekend after a surprisingly strong Friday performance by the Jeff Bridges-Matt Damon western.

But it was the Ben Stiller comedy that was once again #1.

Little Fockers took in $26.3 million, while True Grit earned $24.5 million.

Coming in third place with $18.3 million was Tron: Legacy, followed by such other 3D films as Yogi Bear ($13 million), Chronicles of Narnia ($10.5 million), and Tangled ($10 million).

Mark Wahlberg‘s boxing flick The Fighter followed with $9.9 million.

Occupying the bottom three spots were Gulliver’s Travels ($9.1 million), Black Swan ($8.5 million), and The King’s Speech ($7.6 million).

The numbers are still estimates, and Gossip Cop will have updates.
