Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have landed on Anderson Cooper‘s “Ridiculist” for the $39,000 (also listed as $34,000 on some shopping sites) alligator backpack they created for their fashion line The Row.

The trendsetting twins announced earlier this week that the luxury knapsack was the first thing that sold out at the Paris launch of their new handbag collection, something that Cooper found absolutely preposterous.

While the CNN host acknowledges the Olsens’ business and style acumen, he finds it absurd that anyone would pay $39,000 for a backpack.

But it’s not as if the Olsens are the first to create such a steeply priced purse.

Hermes’ Birkin bag, carried by many celebrities and other women of wealth, can cost well over $50,000.

Well, this is really disturbing.

Duchess Kate and Pippa Middleton are reportedly being used as “thinspiration” on websites promoting anorexia and bulimia.

The “pro-ana” and “pro-mia” forums use celebrities like Victoria Beckham and Mary-Kate Olsen to “inspire” women with eating disorders to lose weight, reports MSNBC.

Now the Middleton sisters have become go-to models for “thinspiration.”

“Every little girl at one time wants to be a princess, and these images will not only reach teenagers but middle and elementary schoolers,” warns Jill M. Pollack of the Center for the Study of Anorexia and Bulimia.

“To have the Middleton sisters [on these sites] is like, oh my God, a disaster waiting to happen.”

Wow.

Obviously, “thinspiration” is an upsetting trend, made even more dangerous by tabloids that obsessively monitor celebrities’ weight changes.

Prince William‘s mother famously struggled with eating disorders. It would be tragic if people used his wife and sister-in-law as inadvertent “role models” for changing their bodies through unhealthy means.

“EXCLUSIVE: Kanye West Spotted Hooking Up With An Olsen On His Birthday!” exclaims Perez Hilton in a headline that got picked up everywhere.

“We wouldn’t have seen this coming!” writes the blogger, who reports that at West’s 34th birthday party at the SubMercer lounge in New York, the rapper was spotted “celebrating the event by hooking up with none other than Mary-Kate Olsen!”

For real?

He adds, “Naughty, naughty, you two! Ha!”

While it’s true Mary-Kate Olsen was at the birthday party, she and West did NOT – repeat, did NOT — hook up.

No one at the club could verify Perez’s account, and a rep for Olsen tells Gossip Cop, “There is no truth to the story whatsoever.”

Naughty naughty, Perez, for once again not fact-checking.

“Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are embroiled in a nasty sibling rivalry – but not with each other,” reads the opening of a National Enquirer story.

According to the tab, the twins are “boiling with jealousy” over little sister Elizabeth‘s newfound success.

As you’ll recall, the younger Olsen was the darling of the Sundance Film Festival, thanks to her starring roles in the films Silent House and the much touted Martha Marcy May Marlene. She’s also been tapped to star in the Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver thriller, Red Lights.

Anyway, the Enquirer claims the twins are “filled with envy and regret over their failing to make the transition to big features films” like their kid sister.

Adds the so-called “insider”: “Mary-Kate and Ashley love Elizabeth. But they hate being eclipsed by her.”

Really?

Not at all.

A source close to the twins tells Gossip Cop that the Enquirer‘s article is “totally ridiculous… They are all very close.”

Olsen stars in two much talked-about films that played at the annual festival, Martha Marcy May Marlene and Silent House.

But that’s not all.

Based on her breakout success at Sundance, the younger Olsen – who’s taking a break from her studies at New York University – has just been tapped to star opposite Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver in a thriller titled, Red Lights.

“Robert plays a world renowned psychic and Sigourney is a psychology professor, and I play her student,” Olsen revealed to the Hollywood Reporter.

According to a story in the National Enquirer, Ashley Olsen is really “stepping up her plans” to marry boyfriend Justin Bartha, but her fast-tracking the relationship has nothing to do with being motivated by love.

Instead, she’s “racing [her] ex to the altar!”

Huh?

Citing an alleged “friend,” the tab states, “Olsen is in a bizarre race to the tie the knot before her ex-boyfriend Scott Sartiano gets married.”

When Olsen heard her club-owning ex got engaged to model Allie Rizzo, her “‘competitive nature’ was triggered,” says the “friend.”

There’s just one problem: Bartha.

Despite Olsen’s “heavy hints,” says the source, Bartha, who starred in The Hangover, “feels they don’t need to rush into it.”

A “family insider” claims Olsen’s sister, Mary-Kate, is worried her “demands will push Justin away.”

Actually, there’s another problem…

The “race to the altar” story is simply not true.

A source close to Olsen tells Gossip Cop that talk of the actress pushing her boyfriend to wed quickly in order to one-up her ex is “BS.”

“Are things over for Ashley Olsen and The Hangover star Justin Bartha?” Life & Style wants to know, after Olsen supposedly “got her cuddle on with hottie Josh Hartnett” at Harvey Weinstein’s BAFTA party in London on February 21.

“They were really flirty,” a partygoer tells the tab, with a second “insider” confirming Ashley Olsen and Hartnett “were making out.”

Sounds steamy!

So steamy it fogged up everyone’s glasses.

Ashley Olsen was not hanging with Hartnett at the BAFTA soiree.

Mary-Kate Olsen was.

Not Ashley.

Mary-Kate.

Gossip Cop understands that the concept of twins can confuse people, but Life & Style could have tried just a bit harder to pin down which Olsen was seen canoodling with Hartnett.

We’d appreciate it, and we’re pretty sure Bartha would, too.

Katy Perry recently said she’d “ditch [her] career” to become a permanent American Idol judge. But would the singer leave behind recording and performing… for shoes?

An item in the New York Post claiming Perry was offered $1 million to collaborate with Steve Madden on a shoe line created a lot of buzz today. In the past, Madden has created shoes with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, and a number of other celebs have dabbled in shoe design.

So can we expect Perry, engaged to Russell Brand, to brand her own footwear collection?

Nope.

“Katy is working on her new album,” a rep for the pop star tells Gossip Cop. “Not a shoe line.”

It was another wild week in Hollywood!

THE GOOD

As “New Moon” nears theaters, its stars are heading out on the promotional circuit. Robert Pattinson will be on MTV’s Ulalume special this coming Friday, October 30, and is also confirmed for “Ellen” on November 20. He is also slotted for “Live with Regis and Kelly” that week, as are co-stars Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner.

Taylor Swift sold out in minutes, a “Twitter ban” on Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz proved bogus, and Lindsay Lohan professed her love for Samantha Ronson.

And how’s this for good news? It looks like Jon Gosselin won’t be appearing on more reality TV, after all!

THE BAD

Beyonce had to bail (again) on a concert in Malaysia, a mag managed to botch 75% of its cover, and Star invented its very own fairy tale wedding for Nicole Richie and Joel Madden and a marriage proposal for Mary-Kate Olsen.

It was a bad week all around for romance rumors. Avril Lavigne doesn’t have a new love, Gerard Butler and Jessica Simpson didn’t actually have a date, Usher isn’t wooing Rihanna, “90210″ stars Matt Lanter and AnnaLynne McCord are just friends, and 50 Cent just has video love for Kelly Rowland.

THE UGLY

David Letterman does not have a “sex tape,” despite the rags’ wishes; Robert Pattinson is not a drunk; and baseless cheap shots from Fox News against tabloid fodder like Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan are as tired as they are wrong.

Know what’s NOT cool – accusing someone of setting up his sister’s DUI, especially when the “evidence” is as invisible as the claim is offensive.

Oh, and also not particularly funny? Death hoaxes. Kanye West was this week’s victim.

When it comes to “Full House” star Mary-Kate Olsen, Star magazine is pretty much full of it.

The weekly says Olsen and beau Nate Lowman just got engaged. According to the tab, Lowman popped the question as the couple visited Paris earlier this month. Star claims to “have all the details,” and “the moment was sweeter than she could have imagined.”

(But amazingly it was precisely as sweet as Star, ahem, imagined.)

The setting? Hotel Le Bristol in Paris, where, says a “pal,” after a four-course gourmet dinner “Nate gave her a truffle box” that actually contained “a beautiful diamond engagement ring!” Continuing in perfect sound bites, the friend says, “Nate’s this grungy, cool artist type, so she was shocked, but in a good way, by what was happening.” Olsen accepted the supposed proposal and told sister Ashley Olsen and her best pals. Star gushes, “She’s so thrilled, she can barely keep it quiet!”

Hmm. Actually, Olsen hasn’t had too much trouble staying quiet on the whole “engagement” – because it’s completely false. Her representative tells Gossip Cop there’s “not one iota of truth” to the story.
