A bizarre story only now circulating months after the couple split claims Reese Witherspoon dumped Jake Gyllenhaal because he smoked marijuana.

The rumor began with Janet Charlton’s Hollywood, the same embarrassing waste of HTML that announced Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor broke up (they did not), exaggerated an Amy Winehouse “crush” on Robert Pattinson, and concocted an absurd story that Stephanie Pratt suspected brother Spencer Pratt of masterminding her DUI arrest.

“Jake had a habit that Reese could not live with, and he wouldn’t give it up,” claims the site, sourcing the former couple’s “acquaintance.”

“He smoked way too much. And we’re not talking nicotine here.”

Charlton insists Witherspoon thought Gyllenhaal smoked too much pot, and that it’s the “real” reason behind the couple’s split.

Now the story is making the rounds among such sites as The Blemish.

The outlets don’t really care that it’s total nonsense.

They want us to believe that Witherspoon was happily attached to Gyllenhaal… until one day she realized he was a drug user and promptly dropped him? After a long-term relationship, during which Gyllenhaal famously charmed Witherspoon’s children?

We’re going to side with logic here, and not the so-called “acquaintance” Charlton cites.

A rep for Gyllenhaal tells Gossip Cop the report is “completely untrue.”

We thought we might escape 2009 without any more ridiculous Robert Pattinson romance rumors.

We worried we wouldn’t have another chance to laugh and laugh and laugh…

And then we saw this.

Yes, hard partying singer Amy Winehouse has “developed a crush” on Pattinson and “finds him and the idea of vampires incredibly sexy.” So sexy, in fact, she’s “threatening to have a vampire-themed blowout” at her home on New Year’s Eve.

News of Winehouse’s crush comes from Janet Charlton’s Hollywood, which infamously alleged Spencer Pratt‘s sister suspected him of setting up her DUI arrest and announced (wrongly) that Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor had split.

But, hey, why should that track record of failure influence our response to Charlton’s statement, “Are we imagining things or does Rob look a little like Amy’s ex-husband Blake [Fielder]? Picture Rob in a wife-beater.”

So, Gossip Cop fans: Robert Pattinson and Amy Winehouse. Couple to watch in 2010?

Just kidding.

“Stephanie Pratt is seething in silence because she thinks her DUI arrest was a set-up masterminded by her brother Spencer Pratt and ‘The Hills’ MTV producers,” claims Janet Charlton’s Hollywood. The reason the blogger accuses Spencer for having his OWN SISTER get in trouble with the law, she says, is because “ratings on the show have been dropping and producers and Spencer have been conspiring to create drama and get publicity for the stars.”

WHAT?!

The site then reports that while Spencer’s sister-in-law Holly Montag celebrated her birthday last Saturday at the Hollywood club Empire, an MTV camera “lingered on Stephanie drinking and they encouraged her to drink more. When it came time to leave, Stephanie hesitated because she IS careful about driving even if she drinks only a little, but Spencer and the producers assured her she was fine.”

WHAT?!

Charlton goes on to say that a police car was “conveniently parked right out front” to bust Stephanie, and adds, “She believes that her ‘hitting rock bottom’ with her drinking is just a plot created for benefit of the show.” 

WHAT?!

Besides being incredibly inaccurate, Gossip Cop cannot believe that a site would not check its facts before accusing various parties of legal wrongdoing. That said, it did not – but Gossip Cop did.

A shocked rep for Spencer Pratt called the report “absolutely false,” and said that not only didn’t Spencer attend Holly Montag’s birthday (as we previously reported), but also “MTV wasn’t even filming.”

And it wasn’t just from his side. Though Charlton cavalierly says Stephanie thinks the whole thing was a “set-up,” an equally bewildered rep for her wondered how the blog came to this conclusion because she “hasn’t been speaking to anyone.” Stephanie’s spokeswoman also assured Gossip Cop the story is “not true.”

The reporting (or lack of) here is criminal.

UPDATE: Another victory for Gossip Cop. Janet Charlton’s Hollywood has since pulled down her completely inaccurate report!

“Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor Split,” screams the headline from the blog Janet Charlton’s Hollywood.

Charlton then begins her story with “We didn’t see this one coming.” Yeah, well no one did because it’s 100 percent NOT TRUE. 

The bad blogger continues by saying that an “inside source” told her that Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor have “put their house on the market for a good reason: they’re splitting up… Christine supposedly wants OUT of the marriage.” While it is true that they have put their home on the market, Taylor does not want out of the marriage and, once again, they are NOT splitting up. (They’re simply moving.)

Charlton even has the gall to editorialize, “It’s sad because they have two young kids.” Yes, it is sad, but it’s only sad because Stiller and Taylor now have two kids who have to hear a completely bogus rumor about their loving parents.

The only one who should split is Charlton.

It’s been a chaotic few weeks for Kanye West since he laid a giant egg with his antics at the MTV Video Music Awards. But many sites have taken it as a cue to invent even more bizarre behavior for the embattled rapper.

On Saturday night, Common organized an all-star benefit concert at The Palladium in Hollywood for The Common Ground Foundation, featuring the likes of Queen Latifah, Ludacris, Mos Def . . . and Kanye West. Janet Charlton reports that Kanye arrived in the green room only minutes before he was due to perform, but still had time to allegedly cause trouble.

According to Charlton’s story, Kanye noticed someone eating chicken and “blurted petulantly, ‘Why wasn’t I offered chicken? It’s NOT FAIR – you want me to perform for free – everyone is eating – WHY AM I NOT EATING!” After he was told that he needed to have ordered the chicken, the item says Kanye then yelled, “‘Well, I’m ASKING NOW!!” as the other celebs watched in horror and girlfriend Amber Rose stepped back.

In a final insult, after a waiter rushed to get Kanye an order of chicken, the star “literally took ONE bite and dumped it before he grabbed the mic and went onstage,” claims Charlton.

Wow! What a crazy backstage story! That’s unbelievable – literally – according to a source who was in the green room. The insider tells Gossip Cop “there was nothing remotely like this.”

Look – Kanye tends to make a fool of himself as it is. He doesn’t need “help” from imaginative media.

Call it Daisy-gate.

Janet Charlton’s Hollywood, which last gave us the ridiculous story about John Mayer and Kristin Cavallari secretly hooking up in The Hollywood Hills, now has this tail, er, tale about a cover-up involving Jessica Simpson’s dog Daisy, who was taken by a coyote.

“The truth is, Daisy was in the care of Jessica’s mother Tina Simpson when Daisy was snatched by that coyote. Jessica has been protecting her mother,” the site claims.

Charlton goes on to say that while Simpson was out of the country filming her new reality show, “The Price of Beauty,” Daisy was in her mother Tina’s care. And on Labor Day the pooch chased after a squirrel and was then snatched by a coyote near the Simpson’s home in Encino, Ca. “The family searched the neighborhood and decided not to break the news to Jessica until she returned,” Charlton writes. “They didn’t want her to have a meltdown far from home. Every day Jessica would call and ask about Daisy and they’d say she was fine.” Well, claims the blog, when Simpson returned six days later, “her tearful family was together and told Jessica that Daisy had been taken by a coyote earlier that day.”

Eventually, it seems, they told her what happened, and “Jessica knew her mother felt awful and didn’t want her to take the blame her (sic) so she was deliberately vague about releasing the details of the tragedy… and although Jessica is beyond heartbroken, she is covering up for her mother.”

Wow. Quite a story. Gossip Cop has yet to hear back from the star’s rep, but reached out to multiple Simpson sources who laughed off talk of a cover-up.

What a week it was for Gossip Cop!

Gossip Cop really busted Star magazine with its story that “Grey’s Anatomy” lead Ellen Pompeo’s husband, Chris Ivery, cheated on her – during her pregnancy – with a teen.  A lot of outlets picked up that story, but Gossip Cop exclusively obtained an email from the teen that read, “I talked to Star Magazine and they were trying to offer me $20,000 for information about Chris. That is ridiculous because nothing is true about us having a relationship.” We confronted Star about the pay-to-say, but not surprisingly no one got back to us.

That same rag got it all wrong when claiming that Natalie Portman just moved to L.A. to be closer to Sean Penn, who’s going through a divorce. Besides the fact that he’s been linked to another woman, Portman moved to the West Coast a year ago.

Despite numerous outlets reporting that Penelope Cruz was pregnant, Gossip Cop led the charge and finally busted that bad dish.  We have it upon good authority that she is “100 percent NOT” pregnant. Plus, we saw some photos of her recently smoking. Still that didn’t stop Perez Hilton. He wrote that despite Cruz’s own “claims” that she’s not pregnant, he believes that she is – and he called her a “liar.” Whoa!

In more pregnant news, the National Enquirer ran a piece that said Mel Gibson was concerned that his pregnant girlfriend wasn’t eating enough. Not true, said his publicist, who recently had dinner with the couple and noted how “healthy” she looked. The Enquirer also waited a good 30 seconds after “The Office” star John Krasinski and Emily Blunt got engaged to say they were fighting over wedding plans. But a rep for Krasinski told Gossip Cop: “There is nothing factually accurate to the story in the National Enquirer except that John and Emily are engaged.”

Then we smelled a rat with a Brad Pitt gerbil story. The British tab The Sun claimed he bought his kids an approximately $83,000 gerbil run, complete with mazes, tunnels and seesaws. That story was full of gerbil pellets.

This week John Mayer was the subject of two wrong romance stories. When Janet Charlton’s Hollywood reported that “The Hills” (and Kristin Cavallari) were alive with the sound of Mayer’s music, we were the first on the scene to say there was “No Such Thing” going on between the two. (Of course, that didn’t stop journalism’s joker Perez Hilton from repeating the fabricated tale). And the other inaccurate love story involving Mayer was an In Touch cover piece on Jessica Simpson that claimed she was secretly hooking up with him again. Yeah, also not true.

In other love news, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony were once again the subject of nasty nuptial rumors, but Gossip Cop spoke to sources close to them and found out it was just the same naysayers singing the same old (off-key) tune. The couple is still making beautiful music.

And it seemed like yesterday the blogs were saying Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron were engaged. Well, the rumor this week was that they are headed for splitsville. Gossip Cop investigated and didn’t find proof to support this sophomoric “High School Musical” tale.

The British Star magazine was trippin’ when it printed a story that Rihanna and Chris Brown, who are legally barred from being near each other, are now planning a trip together to Mexico – meaning they would be outside of U.S. jurisdiction.  The only distance to be noted here is that this story is far from true.

With “Sex and the City” filming in New York this week, there were many a rumor Cop had to handle.  For starters, in the course of just a couple of days, a New York paper said Kim Cattrall was still with her much younger chef boyfriend (uh, they broke up months ago), and that she’s now an American – nope, Cattrall is still a Canadian citizen. Then, rather oddly, the tabs came to Gossip Cop to verify a rumor that Chris Noth (aka “Mr. Big”) was engaged in real-life. We contacted Noth, who texted us back, “Not true.” And, Gossip Cop had amazing footage of thousands of fans peacefully surrounding Sarah Jessica Parker as she moved from one area of shooting to another. Totally worth a look.

The dynamic duo of Perez Hilton and In Touch lost all touch with reality when they claimed that Rosie O’Donnell and Star Jones were going to team up for a reality show. Gossip Cop debunked that quickly. And on the subject of reality TV, after ignoring John and Kate Gosselin all summer we posted a piece and asked you all what you felt about them. Incredibly, the vast majority of you expressed the same sentiment as Gossip Cop – who cares about the two of them? (Barring something unbelievable, don’t expect to see their names in Gossip Cop after this.)

This week the New York Post wrote that Lindsay Lohan was staying under the radar in Austin, Texas, where’s she’s slated to film the movie, “Machete.” Sadly, the New York newspaper somehow missed that Lohan was in New York. We even showed footage of the paparazzi staking her out while shopping in Manhattan – just about the same time that the erroneous “Austin” item was being written. Not to be outdone, New York’s other tab, The New York Daily News did a piece insinuating that Kate Hudson is engaged to Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez. That paper also struck out. They are not engaged.

Across the pond, the Daily Mail said that Uma Thurman was going to walk down the aisle in Kensington Palace, where Princess Diana had lived, but Gossip Cop proved that that, too, was a royal lie.

“Twilight” Highlights: Gossip Cop started the week off nicely, having taken a bite out of Now magazine, which published fabricated Robert Pattinson quotes, but then removed them from its website after Gossip Cop called them out on it. Later we posted a video of the paparazzi hounding Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. The footage showed the two being pursued as they got into a taxi in Vancouver, and then Stewart literally fleeing from the cab and sprinting into their hotel. We debated long and hard whether to show the footage (shot by a third party), and ultimately we felt that writing about it might lead people to think that, like our competitors, we were making it up or were exaggerating the details. But by presenting it, we believed, everyone could accurately assess (even eyewitness) for themselves the harassment that the two “Twilight” stars unfortunately have to endure.

Then there was that OK! cover that was not OK. It blared, “Rob Risks It All For Kristen,” and cautioned, “How his engagement to Kristen is putting Rob’s career and the future of Twilight in jeopardy.” Engagement? Not true. There was so much more, including how the filmmakers were concerned that Pattinson and Stewart hanging out together would affect how people felt about the “New Moon” plot in which her character falls for Jacob Black, played by Taylor Lautner. One, the story is nonsense, and two, nice job insulting “Twilight” fans and implying they can’t separate fact from fiction. Speaking of fiction, there were some other doozies this week, including Pattinson and Stewart sneaking off to an island off of Canada’s coast for a weekend getaway. Stewart, by all accounts, was in Vancouver that weekend. That story was more like Fantasy Island. And we ended the week with the new, expanded, non-bootlegged HD version of the “New Moon” trailer. If you haven’t seen it, check it out. And if you have, watch it again!

(Oh, and then there was that thing about Robert Pattinson using steroids. No, really.)

There was so much more this week, like our correcting that Casey Wilson was dumped from “Saturday Night Live” because of her weight; Megan Fox being taunted by a cursing paparazzo; the Michael Jackson tribute concert being postponed and moved to London; and the surprising news that Ellen DeGeneres was tapped to be the fourth judge on “American Idol.”

And yes, for 30 glorious minutes on Friday it seemed like karma had caught up with Perez Hillton, whom Gossip Cop wrote about for The Huffington Post. For half an hour, PerezHilton.com was temporarily down, and so inaccurate reporting and snide comments were briefly suspended. Many rejoicing readers and Twitterers wrote Gossip Cop wishing that it would be permanent. All we can say is spread the word about Gossip Cop to ALL of your friends, and maybe one day that dream will come true.

According to Janet Charlton’s Hollywood, John Mayer and Kristin Cavallari allegedly “have been hooking up secretly at a mutual friend’s house” in The Hills for the past two years.”

Wait, it gets better . . .

Charlton writes that her source says “Kristin was hesitant to date John publicly because she didn’t want to be added to his long list of conquests, and they were both dating other people off and on,” but the source adds “recently their ‘friends with benefits’ relationship has evolved, and they are actually considering going public.”

Gossip Cop is not going to hold its breath with this one, because The Hills are definitely not alive with the sound of Mayer’s music. As Mayer sings, there’s “No Such Thing” going on. A bewildered rep for Cavallari told Gossip Cop that the tale is “not true.”
